Having reached the furthest south in Argentina we've been so far, we knew we'd had enough for now and it was time to start returning home. Not because we were already tired of seeing all those beautiful landscapes, but because we were 2000 km and the return trip would take several days. The good thing about traveling by car is that along the way you can make different stops that you may not have made during the trip, so taking advantage of this we visited a couple of new points, and among them, the Lanín volcano in Junín de Los Andes, province of Neuquén ❤️.
Después de haber llegado a lo más al sur de Argentina que estuvimos hasta ahora, supimos que ya habíamos tenido suficiente por el momento y que era tiempo de volver a casa. No porque ya estuviéramos cansados de ver todos esos paisajes hermosos, sino porque estábamos a 2000 km de casa y la vuelta nos tomaría varios días. Lo bueno que tiene viajar en auto es que en el camino podes hacer distintas paradas que quizás no hiciste durante la ida, así que aprovechando esto visitamos un par de puntos nuevos, y entre ellos, el volcán Lanín en Junín de Los Andes, provincia de Neuquén ❤️.
The visit to Lago Puelo was something that was definitely not in our initial plans, but it was good that it appeared because it added a special touch to the whole trip in general. After sailing, we returned to El Bolsón and had the last "mates" of the afternoon, and almost as if on purpose, nature gave us a beautiful sunset. We were so blessed in that regard, we couldn't have asked for more ❤️.
La visita a Lago Puelo fue algo que definitivamente no estaba en nuestros planes iniciales, pero que bueno que apareció porque añadió un toque especial a todo el viaje en general. Después de la navegación, regresamos a El Bolsón y tomamos los últimos mates de la tarde, y casi como a propósito, la naturaleza nos regaló un hermoso atardecer. Fuimos tan bendecidos en ese sentido, no podríamos haber pedido más ❤️.
The next day, we got up very early and headed north again. We had breakfast in the car so as not to waste time, but every so often we made small stops to stretch our legs. During this trip I discovered how sleepy it makes you to see the road for so many uninterrupted kilometers and the importance of not driving for so long without stopping. I was in my co-driver role and I think I did a good job conversing with my cousin so that neither of us fell asleep. Anyway, seeing those beautiful landscapes it was difficult to get bored ❤️.
Al día siguiente, nos levantamos muy temprano y emprendimos viaje nuevamente en sentido norte. Desayunamos en el auto para no perder tiempo, pero cada tanto hacíamos pequeñas paradas para estirar las piernas. Durante este viaje descubrí lo somnoliento que te pone ver la ruta durante tantos km ininterrumpidos y la importancia de no manejar tanto tiempo sin parar. Yo estaba en mi rol de copiloto y creo que hice un buen trabajo conversando con mi primo para que ninguno de los dos se adormezca. Igual, viendo esos paisajes tan lindos era difícil aburrirse ❤️.
Although we had gone to Villa La Angostura on the outward journey, we had not reached this viewpoint so on the way back this was a mandatory stop. Villa La Angostura was one of the places that I liked the most and without a doubt I would return because every corner we visited was wonderful. As a curiosity, if you look at the first scene of the movie "X-Men: first generation", you will see an Argentine landscape like this one that says "Villa Gesell". Well, this was actually a production error, since the real name of the place is this, Villa La Angostura in Neuquén, while Villa Gesell is a beach on the coast of Buenos Aires 😅.
Si bien habíamos ido a Villa La Angostura en el viaje de ida, no habíamos llegado hasta este mirador así que en la vuelta esta fue una parada obligatoria. Villa La Angostura fue uno de los lugares que más me gustó y sin dudas volvería porque cada rincón que conocimos fue maravilloso. A modo de curiosidad, si observan la primera escena de la película "X-Men: primera generación", verán un paisaje argentino como este que dice "Villa Gesell". Bueno, esto en realidad fue un error de producción, ya que el verdadero nombre del lugar es este, Villa La Angostura en Neuquén, mientras que Villa Gesell es una playa de la costa de Buenos Aires 😅.
After spending almost 7 hours between trips and stops, we arrived again in San Martín de Los Andes, where we stayed for the largest number of days during the outward journey. Again we chose the same campsite to stay and again we had to set up our entire camp. By this point we were already professionals unpacking in record time, so that day we prepared everything quickly and we just dedicated ourselves to walking around the center at night and then going to sleep early 😅.
Después de pasar casi 7 horas entre viaje y paradas, llegamos nuevamente a San Martín de Los Andes, en donde estuvimos alojados la mayor cantidad de días durante el viaje de ida. Otra vez elegimos el mismo camping para quedarnos y nuevamente tuvimos que armar todo nuestro campamento. Para este punto ya éramos unos profesionales desempacando en tiempo récord así que ese día preparamos todo rápido y solo nos dedicamos a pasear por el centro a la noche y luego a dormir temprano 😅.
As we had already covered enough of San Martín de Los Andes in all the days that we had gone there at the beginning, the next day we decided to visit a nearby city called Junín de Los Andes. This place is only 40 km away and it took us less than an hour to get there. One of its main attractions is the Lanín Volcano, so we wanted to chase it down a bit 😅.
Como ya habíamos recorrido bastante de San Martín de Los Andes en todos los días que habíamos ido allí al principio, al día siguiente decidimos visitar una ciudad cercana llamada Junín de Los Andes. Este lugar queda a solo 40 km y llegar nos tomó menos de una hora. Uno de los principales atractivos que tiene es el Volcán Lanín así que quisimos perseguirlo un poco 😅.
It is easy to distinguish this volcano from the other mountain peaks because of its shape and because it was the only one that had snow in the middle of summer. The Lanín Volcano represents an icon of the province of Neuquén, so much so that it appears on its flag, so it is worth going to see it a little more closely from the lake. For that, it is necessary to go to the Lanín National Park, which is where it is located ❣️.
Es fácil distinguir este volcán de los demás picos montañosos por su forma y porque era el único que tenía nieve en pleno verano. El Volcán Lanín representa un ícono de la provincia de Neuquén, tanto que aparece en su bandera así que vale la pena ir a conocerlo un poco más de cerca y verlo desde el lago. Para eso, es necesario acercase hasta el Parque Nacional Lanín, que es donde se encuentra ubicado ❣️.
As in all national parks, in this one you also had to pay an entrance fee to be able to move around the entire area. There are different mountain activities, such as trekking, camping and even climbing towards the volcano. To do all these activities you have to register because they take several hours and even days, so it is necessary to have a trail of those who want to do this. As we were only interested in going to the beach very close to the entrance, the park guards let us pass for free 😅.
Al igual que en todos los parques nacionales, en este también había que pagar una entrada para poder moverse por toda esa área. Hay distintas actividades de montaña, como trekkings, acampe e incluso escalada hacia el volcán. Para hacer todas estas actividades hay que registrarse porque toman varias horas e incluso días, por lo que es necesario tener un rastro de quienes quieren hacer esto. Como a nosotros solo nos interesaba ir hasta la playa muy cerca en la entrada, los gurdiaparques nos dejaron pasar gratis 😅.
On this beach of Lake Huechulafquen you can also swim, but as always, without lifeguard service and taking into account that the water is deep and icy. In any case, since the coast in this part is rocky, it is better to look for other places to swim and simply leave this one to sit down for a snack while observing the landscape. Or at least that's what I would have done 😅.
En esta playa del Lago Huechulafquen también se puede nadar, pero como siempre, sin servicio de guardavidas y teniendo en cuenta que el agua es profunda y helada. De todos modos, como la costa en esta parte es rocosa es mejor buscar otros lugares para nadar y este simplemente dejarlo para sentarse a merendar observando el paisaje. O al menos eso hubiese hecho yo 😅.
This volcano is more than 3,500 meters high and if you are wondering about its status, yes: it is active. However, its last eruption dates from more than 1500 years ago so there is not much to worry about (I guess). On average, the ascent to this volcano takes 7 hours and at the top there are shelters with a maximum capacity of 60 people. That is why this activity must be carried out in a controlled manner in order to receive everyone. The entire path is signposted so you can climb independently or with guides. Este volcán tiene más de 3500 metros de altura y por si se preguntan por su estado, si: está activo. Sin embargo, su última erupción data de hace mas de 1500 años así que no hay mucho de qué preocuparse (supongo). En promedio, el ascenso hasta este volcán tarda 7 horas y en la cima hay refugios con una capacidad máxima de 60 personas. Es por esto que esta actividad debe realizarse de manera controlada para poder recibir a todos. Visiting the volcano is a good walk to take home a great memory of the province of Neuquén (as if the other beautiful landscapes we saw had not been enough). I think that if my physical condition were a little better I would encourage myself to climb it, but as I am now I can't climb even a meter haha. But seeing it from there was worth it because it's beautiful, near or far. Now I can say that I have seen a volcano with my own eyes, the only one so far but hopefully there will be more in the future 😅.
Visitar el volcán es un buen paseo como para llevarse un gran recuerdo de la provincia de Neuquén (como si con los otros paisajes hermosos que vimos no hubiese sido suficientes). Creo que si mi estado físico fuera un poco mejor me animaría a escalarlo, pero tal cual estoy ahora no puedo subir ni un metro jaja. Pero verlo desde allí valió la pena porque es hermoso, cerca o lejos. Ahora puedo decir que he visto un volcán con mis propios ojos, el único hasta el momento pero ojalá sean más en el futuro 😅.

I always call the moments when you get to explore something that was not part of your trip/list as a bliss offered by nature. I've had many moments during my journey when I was discovering other locations than these I planned to and they were so beautiful. Just like the volcano you've seen 💚
