A mountain day hike in Ghana, Koforidua

in Pinmapple2 years ago

Koforidua is a quickly growing city in the Eastern Region of Ghana and the capital of this region. It is about 2 hours from Accra the capital of Ghana and currently has about 1.8 million inhabitants. In 2015 I visited there with my dad as we were doing a little exploring in the area. We stayed a night there in a guest house and then walked around the town the next day.

There is not a lot in terms of tourism or to see or do in this city so we saw a mountain hanging over the city so we decided to climb it. We did not know any established route or even that there was a road going up it so we just worked our way in that general direction.

Aimlessly walking the streets.

Heading in the direction of the foot of the mountain.

We headed in the general direction of one of the major landmarks an old church with two steeples. We found a path heading up the hill behind that general area where the roads end.

We made our way between some houses that climbed the hill. We stared to climb elevation and get a view over the city. The area was a bit hazy though from bush fires.

Eventually we climbed the valley and came to an area above all settlements it was a mixture of trees brush, and farming areas. The path at this point was just a single foot path which is nice for hiking and makes the experience more enjoyable like people have had less effect on the natural area.

We still had a ways to go until we reach the top of the mountain. And our foot path eventually met a paved road that wound its way up. From this point on since we did not know the paths well in the area we continued along the road to the top of the mountain where the radio towers area.

When we reached the top of the mountain we found a surprise. The view was not as nice as it could have been as the sky was filled with smoke and dust. I believe this was also in January and part of this could be the Hammatan which is a lot of sand and dust in the air from winds coming out of the Sahara desert.

We found these signs advertising fresh sobolo and popcorn. It seemed like a worthy treat for the climb we just completed so we went to investigate.

We were able to get a little bit of a view from the vantage point at the top of the hill though.

We found the popcorn and sobolo and a friendly man as the owner of this house at the top of the mountain. We enjoyed our snack and he shared a photo album with us of many of the visitors over time and his experience on the mountain top.

It is clear on nicer days he lives on a beautiful property and can enjoy fresh air and spectacular views.

I took a portrait of our gracious host as we were going. It will be nice to go back and visit him again sometime.

Here is my dad ready to hit the trail again.

This time rather than just following the road down we took the first foot path going down the face of the mountain we could find. We knew if we went down hill we would eventually get back to the city. This was rewarding as we would through farms and a different saddle in the foot hills.

We eventually ended up on basically the same path that we started on and ended up back close to the church.

We will end our hike here with a view of the colonial ear church.

Thanks for tagging along on another adventure from my past. All pictures were taken from my camera phone, I believe at that time it was some version of a Samsung Galaxy.

My affection for Koftown, as we call it, is really strong. Since my wife is from there and once worked there, I have visited frequently. The town is my favorite because it is a farming community with a lot of land. Recently, I found out that you live in Ghana. It's nice to meet you @leifasaur. All Hivers in Ghana meeting up one day would be fantastic.

Man I didn’t know you were married. Congrats!

I think I’ve known about leif for a while though. Don’t see him around as often because he’s probably busy with his farm, business and family. I think meeting up one day, us Hivers in Ghana, would be great!

Thanks for the comment. Yeah that is the only time I have been to Koftown but I liked all the greenery. I have recently just discovered hiveghana but I will keep an eye out for a meetup.

It will be nice meeting you. Welcome to Hiveghana

Looks like you had a lovely time - thanks for sharing these great pics !

Dear @leifasaur, we need your help!

The Hivebuzz proposal already got important support from the community. However, it lost its funding a few days ago and only needs a few more HP to get funded again.

May we ask you to support it so our team can continue its work this year?
You can do it on Peakd, ecency,
