The most iconic and extraordinary place in the region of Puglia, Italy that comes to my mind right away, is definitely Alberobello. Its whitewashed cylindrical houses with stone tiled roofs called "trulli" are like taken from another world at another time. They are nothing you've seen before.
Today, however, I want to share with you my perspective of the whole region, as I was happy to have the chance to spend few days on our own schedule, using the liberty of riding a rental car and going anywhere we wanted to. Italy is often compared to a boot as when you look the maps it has some resemblance and Puglia is exactly the heel of that boot ;)
Those trulli are truly :P spectacular. We spent a night in one of them, converted to a room-to-rent and it was an unforgettable night in many ways. In fact many of those could be seen when driving the small country roads in Puglia. I suppose they have been used as some kind of storage agricultural buildings in the past, maybe some locals still utilize them for that purpose. But imagine how you drive for hours between fields and then you see one of those:
The soils create there colorful paysages. Yes, this word is perfect for the occasion :) Its color against the crystal blue sky and the saturated green of the several olive trees:
If you think tourism and agriculture are the only interesting and specific sides of Puglia, check out where the road took us one evening. It looks like a floating establishment, isn't it?
Another evening by the sea and we were blessed with a charming sunset by the beach bar where we stopped to satisfy our hunger:
Another aspect that impressed me much was that I could see street art almost everywhere, even at the strangest hidden places and narrow pathways...
I guess we could see why Italians are well-known as great designers. They just unleash their creativity and that is supported everywhere in many different ways.
I will never forget another night we spent in a former castle turned into a hotel which we randomly found through a booking service. This was the view from our back window with a nice semi-hidden restaurant under the stars and...
...imagine how pleasant it was to have our breakfast at the palace balcony with a view of the old roofs and the morning sky.
It was at the holiday time when Italians celebrate San Rocco and even the ordinary streets looked like in a fairy-tail.
