Last week, I described my adventures while rafting on the Sejm River. The end point of our trip was an island near the town of Baturyn, where I really wanted to go on a tour.
However, as you could already read, my two friends and I were far behind the main group. They had a whole day for a tour, andI had about 45 minutes in the morning before departure:( To go or not to go? My answer was "yes!" I walked quickly along the waterfront to get to the center.
Минулого тижня я описувала свої пригоди під час сплаву на ріці Сейм. Кінцевою точкою нашої подорожі був острів біля містечка Батурин, куди я дуже хотіла потрапити на екскурсію.
Проте як ви вже могли прочитати, я з двома друзями сильно відстала від основної групи. У них на екскурсію був цілий день, а у мене десь 45 хвилин зранку перед від'їздом:( Йти чи не йти? Моя відповідь була: так! Я швидким кроком пішла по набережній щоб потрапити в центр...
In 2007 I was already here with a tour group. Then we visited several cities in the Chernihiv region and got great impressions! This time I was curious what has changed here in 12 years ?? And a lot has changed. For the better:)
У 2007 році я вже була тут разом з туристичною групою. Тоді ми відвідали кілька міст у Чернігівській області. Цього разу мені було цікаво, а що ж змінилося тут за 12 років?? А змінилося багато.
So before us is one of the capitals of Ukraine! The city was originally part of the Polish state, but in 1648 became a Cossack. In 1669-1708 it was the capital of Ukraine. The city reached its greatest prosperity during the time of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. (Hetman was the leader of the Cossack army and at the same time the leader of the entire state, which included part of the current territory of Ukraine).
Отож перед нами одна зі столиць України! Місто було спочатку належало до Речі Посполитої, проте з 1648 стало козацьким. У 1669-1708 воно було столицею України. Найбільшого розквіту місто досягло у часи гетьмана Івана Мазепи.

In the center of Baturyn in 2009 a magnificent monument was erected: "Prayer for Ukraine", which depicts 5 hetmans who were related to this city. This is if you look from right to left: Demyan Ignatovych, Ivan Samoilovich, Ivan Mazepa, Pylyp Orlyk and Kyrylo Rozumovsky. I liked this composition for its dynamism, very carefully depicted facial features and clothing of each character.
У центрі Батурина у 2009 поставили чудовий пам'ятник: "Молитва за Україну", який зображає 5 гетьманів, що мали відношення до цього міста. Це якщо дивитися справа наліво: Дем'ян Ігнатович, Іван Самойлович, Іван Мазепа, Пилип Орлик та Кирило Розумовський: вони разом розглядають карту України. Мені сподобалась ця композиція своїм динамізмом, дуже старанно зображено риси обличчя та одяг кожного персонажа.
The beautiful white church, built in the style of classicism, also attracts attention. This is the tomb of the last hetman of Ukraine - Kyrylo Rozumovsky. Unfortunately, in the early hour I did not get inside.
Привертає увагу і красива біла церква, збудована у стилі класицизму. Це усипальниця останнього гетьмана України - Кирила Розумовського. На жаль через ранню годину я не потрапила всередину.
Here is an interesting wooden building. This is a fortress restored in the 2000s, which existed here during the Cossacks.
In 2007 and 2019.
Unfortunately, the city of Baturyn was completely destroyed after a rapid boom. Hetman Ivan Mazepa wanted to gain Ukraine's independence from the Russian Empire, enlisting the support of Swedish King Charles XII. But the Swedes were defeated near Poltava in 1709, and Mazepa was declared a traitor. Therefore, even faster in 1708, the Moscow army under Prince Menshikov completely razed Baturyn to the ground, killing everyone, even children and women.
Unfortunately, innocent people often die during war and it continues today! People are constantly destroying each other instead of living peacefully on this beautiful planet and helping each other!
After this tragedy, the town stood empty for a long time. And could not grow to the size that was in the days of the Cossacks.
Аж ось цікава дерев'яна будівля. Це відновлена у 2000-х роках фортеця, що існувала тут у часи козацтва.
На жаль, місто Батурин після стрімкого розквіту було повністю знищене. Гетьман Іван Мазепа хотів здобути незалежність України від Російської імперії, заручившись підтримкою шведського короля Карла XII. Але шведи були розгромлені під Полтавою, а Мазепа оголошений зрадником. Московське військо під керуванням князя Меншикова повністю зрівняло з землею Батурин, убивши усіх, навіть дітей та жінок. На жаль під час війни часто гинуть невинні люди і це триває і сьогодні!
Після цієї трагедії містечко довго стояло пусткою. І не змогло вже зрости до тих розмірів, які були у часи козацтва.
On the territory of the fortress there is a beautiful church, built on old technologies on the same place where it once stood.

In 2007 we also visited the house of Judge General Vasyl Kochubey. He was a close friend and ally of Hetman Mazepa, but he later betrayed him by writing a denunciation to the emperor. Kochubey had a daughter, Motrya. The love story of Motrya and Hetman Mazepa, who is much older than her, is sung in a historical novel by Bohdan Lepky. Letters between lovers, which are presented in the exposition of this museum, have survived to this day.

The house is quite old (a rare case of a secular building of the Ukrainian Baroque!) There is a very beautiful yard with flowers, old jugs and an apiary.
У 2007 ми побували також у будинку генерального судді Василя Кочубея. Це був близький друг і соратник гетьмана Мазепи, але саме він його потім зрадив, написавши донос імператору. У Кочубея була донька Мотря. Історія кохання Мотрі і значно старшого за неї гетьмана Мазепи оспівана в історичному романі Богдана Лепкого. До наших днів збереглись листи між закоханими, які представлені в експозиції цього музею.
Сам будинок є рідкісним зразком світського українського бароко. Поряд дуже красива територія із квітами, старими глечиками та пасікою.
A little further from the city center stands the restored palace of last Ukrainian Hetman Rozumovsky. He was an educated man who dreamed of preserving the Ukrainian state and reviving the ancient capital. I did not have time to visit this palace, so it is worth coming here again:) There is also a beautiful exhibition of antique furniture, paintings and various household items.
Трохи далі від центру міста стоїть відновлений палац гетьмана Розумовського. Це була освічена людина, яка мріяла зберегти українську державу і відродити давню столицю. Цей палац я не встигла відвідати, тому варто приїхати сюди ще раз:) Там також є красива експозиція із старовинних меблів, картин і різних предметів побуту.

Baturyn appeared in all its glory thanks to the ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, who in 2002 signed a decree on the restoration of the city! Thanks to his efforts, all works were completed in 2008-2009.
In general, I believe that every Ukrainian should visit the hetman's capitals and places where Cossacks lived and fought. Let's remember and study our history!
Батурин постав у всій своїй красі завдяки президенту України Віктору Ющенку, який у 2002 підписав указ про відновлення міста!
А взагалі я вважаю, що кожен українець повинен побувати у гетьманських столицях і у місцях де жили та воювали козаки. Пам'ятаймо і вивчаймо нашу історію. Іноді це буває корисно для виживання.

@lilideleopolis, Wow you spent really amazing time to watch such awesome area. There are so many impressive things. Especially I woder about the architecture of the buildings and churth.
