Hunting Sardines from Illovo to Pennington

Lockdown blues had me in its grip after just over three months of only venturing to food stores and pharmacies!

I felt like a kid going on a long awaited trip when a sunny Sunday morning greeted us and we decided to venture further afield in search of The Greatest Shoal on Earth; not saying that we found it, but a glorious day we had indeed!

ILLOVO BEACH
Driving, stopping and walking was the order of the day as our hunt on the south coast of Kwazulu Natal began with our first stop at Illovo Beach.

We saw several railway bridges, this one across the Illovo River where it meets the great blue Indian Ocean, but no Gannets dive-bombing into the sea that's always a sign that the sardines are around.

Beautiful Aloes in full flower thriving on the coast.

UMKOMAAS BEACH
Our next stop was Umkomaas beach with a couple of fishermen and some families enjoying the sunny winter's day on the beach; many wearing face masks at half mast; others more careful with masks on fully.

A little plane scouring the ocean, probably to see if there's sardine activity.

SCOTTBURGH BEACH
Still no sardines, so it was off to Scottburgh Beach a little further south; sad to see the waterslide that usually is Open every day all year round currently at a standstill!

Again only a couple of families walking around this popular beach.

These popular fishing rocks are usually packed with fishermen standing on top of each other, but thank goodness they were trying to keep to social distancing.

UMDONI GOLF COURSE
Lunchtime was looming by the time we got to our next destination at the picturesque Umdoni Golf Course.

We stopped at the discarded lighthouse where we walked down to the beach to see if there was any sardine activity here, but not so!

The sign here says - My run, Your run, We all run!
But not a single runner in sight anywhere, only saw a handful of golfers!

We sadly had to leave, as there was no room at the inn so to speak!

THE DOGHOUSE CRAFT CAFE @ PENNINGTON
We were starving by now, so drove to our favourite spot, The Doghouse Craft Cafe on the outskirts of another coastal town called Pennington.

This little gem is situated on a farm, with a picturesque Bass Dam, lovely picnic area with tables well apart from each other.

One can also sit at tables scattered around the garden next to the restaurant.

They currently have a limited but delightful take away menu and craft beers from the resident Bassett Breweries that one can purchase to take home.

More laidback and relaxed one cannot find anywhere.

Another pleasant surprise was the tiny little farm stall called The Shed @Pennington where I managed to find the best honey I've tasted for a long while.

I'll end off with a smile for @elizacheng and @tattoodjay's WednesdayWalk MakeMeSmile with this old funny face of an old Avocado tree.

So our Sardine hunt came to an end with no success, but head on over to that post link I gave at the beginning if you want to read more about The Greatest Shoal on Earth, and hopefully we can still see some sarinde activity before they disappear!

Looking down to the Illovo Beach on Winklespruit side is where we walk the dogs, always quiet down there. Inland shot, I live just over the hill with all the sugar cane LOL...

Yes it is time to start venturing a little further afield, yesterday put plans into motion to escape to the mountains in October all going well!

Still need to get to the breweries and enjoy some time in that lovely little hidden spot you have found, as for fresh honey, Oh there are some wonderful honey farms around, we are lucky.

And now the government has stopped leisure travel again and family visits as if that's causing Corona to spread, yet taxis can operate at 100% capacity, absolutely idiotic!

This is a cool WALK and SMILE post...
Sardine hunt... oh... The last photos... are those all sardines??? That's a lot!!!
And that's one creative tree... 😁 😁 😁
!BEER

Yes there's always tons of sardines when they're on the run, that tree has a lovely home, no wonder it's got such a big smile;)
Thank you for keeping this going in @tattoodjay's absence @elizacheng:)
