Limone sul Garda in Italy

The world's northernmost lemon orchard – Weltweit nördlichster Zitronengarten

Limone is a little town on the western shore of Lake Garda at the foot of steep cliffs. A few years ago, my wife and I spent several spring days there. It was not until 1931 that there was a road; before that, the village could only be reached by boat or by mountain path. Nowadays 10,000 tourists come every day in summer to visit the former fishing village of 1,000 inhabitants. But out of season, it can be very quiet and idyllic.

Limone Old Town parish church San Benedetto

Cars cannot drive in the narrow streets of the old town. The parish church of San Benedetto was built in 1691 over a Romanesque predecessor from the 11th century.

Jahrhundert gebaut.

Limone is the northernmost place in Europe, if not the whole world, where citrus fruits have been cultivated for sale. They sold lemons and oranges especially to Germany, Poland, and Russia.

From Limone, a very steep path leads up into the mountains, in the past the only road. My wife is preparing herself for the next climb.

The northern part of Lake Garda is framed by mountains of the Dolomites. Accordingly, you will find gentian along the way.

That's a lovely idyllic little town and what a fitting name for it. The view from the top is gorgous, definitely worth the hike up.

Thank you very much, I will do so. As for the name, it's a bit confusing: originally, Limone comes from Limes, the Roman border nearby. When citrus fruits were cultivated much later, it was referred to lemon.

I wanted to congratulate you for the post! I have been in Limone for 6 months to build a hotel and I must say that you have described it perfectly.
there you can breathe a really clean air, it is a pity that with this pandemic there is little tourism!🍋

I am very pleased that you liked the post. Let's hope it gets better soon. Tourists are important for Italy. And Italy is important for tourists from the north, it is still a place of desire.

Italy has its own characteristics. and this is very interesting. who knows when I can go there ... kwkkwk
