Our trip to Aizu Wakamatsu has been over for more than a week, but fortunately I still have the memories and some photos which help me to refresh the pictures in my head. And in mym memories, after visiting the Samurai school I am still in Aizu Wakamatsu.
Today we are going on a small excursion to Ashinomaki Onsen 芦ノ牧温泉, a little hot spring village about half an hour south of Aizu Wakamatsu. Onsen, as thermal baths are called in Japan are quite a big deal here in Japan, which seems to have a lot of thermal energy under its ground. Unfortunately, this manifests itself in the form of earthquakes and volcanoes, but also through the many hot springs, which are popular throughout the country.
We actually just wanted to have a look around, and enjoy a bit of nature while driving through the countryside. I had passed through here a few years ago and could still remember that it might be worthwhile to take a closer look.
Ashinomaki Onsen is located directly in the mountains next to the Aganogawa River, which still has a long way to go before he enters the Sea of Japan. The mountains, forest and the river work wonderfully harmoniously together and offer a beautiful setting.
The village is located a little higher next to a gorge and when you look over the river valley from above, you can see great panoramas. Exactly this view was still in my mind and had lured us here again this time.
But let's have a look together, maybe you like it too....

Unser Ausflug nach Aizu Wakamatsu ist leider schon seit über einer Woche vorbei, aber ich habe ja zum Glück noch die Erinnerungen und einige Bilder, die mir helfen die Eindrücke ein wenig aufzufrischen. Und in meinen Erinnerungen sind wir, nach dem Besuch in der Samurai Schule, immer noch in Aizu Wakamatsu.
Heute unternehmen wir einen kleinen Ausflug nach Ashinomaki Onsen 芦ノ牧温泉,, einem kleinen Thermalbad circa eine halbe Stunde südlich von Aizu Wakamatsu. Onsen, wie die Thermalbäder in Japan heißen, sind eine ganz große Sache hier im Inselreich, welches ein Menge an thermaler Energie unter seinem Boden zu haben scheint. Das äußert sich leider auch in Form von Erdbeben und Vulkanen, aber zum Glück auch durch heiße Quellen, die immer wieder gerne genutzt werden.
Wir wollten uns eigentlich nur mal umschauen, und bei der Fahrt ein wenig Natur genießen. Vor einigen Jahren bin ich hier schon mal durchgefahren und konnte mich noch daran erinnern, dass es sich lohnen könnte, hier mal einen genaueren Blick zu wagen.
Ashinomaki Onsen ist direkt in den Bergen am Aganogawa Fluss gelegen, welcher von hier noch einen weiten weg bis zum Japanischen Meer vor sich hat. Aber Berge, Wald und Fluss wirken wunderbar harmonisch zusammen und bieten einen wunderschönen Hintergrund.
Der Ort ist etwas höher direkt neben einer Schlucht gelegen und von oben zeigen sich einem beim Blick über das Flusstal tolle Panoramen. Genau dieser Anblick war mir noch im Gedächtnis und hatte uns auch diesmal hier wieder her gelockt.
Aber schaut doch einmal mit mir zusammen um, vielleicht gefällt es euch ja auch...
From the bridge that spans the Aganogawa high above, you have the best view and you can see the various Onsen hotels, some of which are unfortunately no longer in use and look pretty abandont. Japan has experienced a period of economic stagnation in recent decades, which has led to the closure of many of the hotels and restaurants built during the economic bubble period. This is at the same time interesting but also very sad to see.
Von der Brücke, die hoch oben den Aganogawa überspannt hat man die beste Aussicht und man kann die verschiedenen Onsenhotels sehen, welche leider teilweise nicht mehr genutzt werden. Japan hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine Zeit wirtschaftlicher Stagnation erlebt, welche dazu geführt hat, dass viele der in der wirtschaftlichen Bubble-Zeit errichteten Hotels und Restaurants aufgegeben wurden. Das ist gleichzeitig interessant aber auch sehr schade mit anzusehen.
However, the view great and since also the weather had played along, we were truly in the best mood. Especially as some Yae-zakura trees were still in bloom, a late type of Japanese cherry trees, which helped to lift up and enhance the atmosphere even more.
Trotz allem wirkt die Aussicht und da auch das Wetter mitgespielt hatte, waren wir wirklich bester Laune. Gerade weil auch noch einige Yae-zakura Bäume geblüht haben, ein später Typ der japanischen Kirschbäume, die das ganze Ensemble noch einmal aufgewertet hatten.
Somehow I felt like I was on vacation, and actually we were and really enjoyed this day. Especially I as a non-Japanese then often perceive the surroundings with completely different eyes and I am interested in things that the "normal" Japanese would not even see at all.
Irgendwie hatte ich mich wie im Urlaub gefühlt, und das waren wir ja eigentlich auch und haben diesen Tag wirklich genossen. Besonders ich als Nicht-Japaner nehme dann oft die Umgebung mit ganz anderen Augen war und interessiere mich für Sachen, die der "normale" Japaner gar nicht sehen würde.
Like for example this bus stop. Nothing special in itself, but then it fits right here, with its simple yet elegant Japanese design. The waiting person can find some shelter and a place for a break, and to be honest I would also like to take the bus here.
Wie zum Beispiel die Bushaltestelle. An sich nichts besonderes, passt sie dann aber doch genau hierher, mit ihrem schlichten aber doch japanisch eleganten Design. Sie bietet dem Wartenden Schutz und Raum für eine Pause und auch ich würde hier gerne einmal den Bus nehmen.
Or on the other side of the street this toilet building. Not an architectural masterpiece either, but also just right and fitting. And above all, clean enough to do go in and to do your business here. What I appreciate very much in Japan is the general cleanliness in public spaces and also in the toilets, many other countries can still learn from this.
Oder auf der anderen Straßenseite dieses Toilettenhäuschen. Auch keine architektonisches Meisterwerk, aber doch auch genau richtig und passend. Und vor allem sauber genug, um hier auch mal kurz sein Geschäft zu verrichten. Was ich in Japan sehr zu schätzen weiß, ist die allgemeine Sauberkeit im öffentlichen Raum und auch in den Toiletten, da können sich viele andere Ländern noch etws abschauen.
And what can't be missing in a real Onsen place are the hot springs. This natural spring was right next to the main road, the warm water just ran undisturbed down a few rocks and stones and then seeped away just as unused. Pure nature.
Und was in einem richtigen Onsen-Ort nicht fehlen darf, sind die heißen Quellen. Diese hier war direkt neben der Hauptstraße zu finden, dass warme Wasser lief einfach so ungestört ein paar Steine und Felsen runter und versickerte dann genau so ungenutzt. Natur halt.
But of course this is not the same everywhere, as fortunately the hot water is also well used, such as in thermal baths, which are often found in hotels. But in various places in the town we also found public foot baths, in which you could dip your more or less exhausted feet and legs.
Aber natürlich gilt das nicht überall, denn zum Glück wird das heiße Wasser auch gut genutzt, wie zum Beispiel in Thermalbädern, welche oft in Hotels zu finden sind. Aber an verschiedenen Stellen im Ort gab es auch öffentliche Fußbäder, in die man seine mehr oder weniger erschöpften Füße und Beine tauchen konnte.
Like the AshiPoppo 足ポッポ foot bath, which does not necessarily shine and look like a gem in the photo, but in reality was then quite inviting and suitable for a little break.
So wie beim AshiPoppo 足ポッポ Fußbad, welches zwar auf den dem Foto nicht unbedingt als Schmuckstück rüberkommt, aber in der Realität dann doch ganz einladend und tauglich für eine kleine Pause war.
After we had relaxed our feet a little bit we went on and had a short look at the riverbank. Here too was a still wonderfully blooming Yae-zakura tree.
Nachdem wir unsere Füße ein wenig entspannt hatten ging es weiter und wir haben uns mal kurz am Flußufer umgesehen. Auch hier gab es einen noch wundervoll blühenden Yae-zakura Baum.
A wonderful relaxing environment, which you can only discover if you leave the main road. Google Maps can then also be very helpful to discover and to reach such slightly hidden places.
Eine herrliche entspannende Umgebung, die man nur entdeckt, wenn man auch mal die Hauptstraße verlässt. Google Maps kann dann auch sehr hilfreich sein, solche leicht versteckten Orte zu entdecken und zu erreichen.
Japan is a bear country, you should always make sure of that and therefore be a bit careful. There are often signs telling you not to get involved with these sometimes cute-looking fellows. I don't really care about closer acquaintance, but I would like to watch a bear from a distance.
Japan ist Bär-Land, dessen sollte man sich immer wieder einmal vergewissern und deshalb auch ewas Vorsicht walten lassen. Es gibt oft Hinweisschilder, dass man sich ja nicht mit diesen manchmal doch putzig aussehenden Gesellen einlassen sollte. Auf nähere Bekanntschaft lege ich nicht wirklich wert, würde aber gerne mal einen Bären aus der Ferne beobachten können.
Before heading back, there was another footbath, this time right next to a small shrine, slightly hidden at the end of a dead-end street. But all the more inviting for us, who don't need to be told twice about that.
Vor der Rückfahrt gab es dann noch ein weiteres Fußbad, diesmal direkt neben einem kleinen Schrein, leicht versteckt am Ende einer Sackgasse. Aber um so einladender für uns, die sich so etwas nicht zweimal sagen lassen.
The water was well-tempered, perhaps a little too lukewarm for my taste, who likes it a little hotter. But when I dipped my legs into the upper basin, which was closer to the actual spring, I felt quite comfortable and my ankles were warming up.
Das Wasser war wohltemperiert, vielleicht etwas zu lau für meinen Geschmack, der es of gerne etwas heißer mag. Aber als ich dann meine Beine in das obere Becken getaucht hatte, welches dichter an der Quelle war, war mir dann doch auch ziemlich wohl und warm um die Knöchel.
In the water we found some witnesses of the flower beauty, which had covered the whole country just before. In April the cherry blossom had intoxicated the whole country like they do every year and some petals had made their way into the water basin, a beautiful but also melancholic sight, which was perfectly fitting to our moods.
Im Wasser schwommen dann noch einige Zeugen der Blütenpracht, welche kurz zuvor das ganze Land überzogen hatte. Die Kirschblüte hatte im April wie jedes Jahr das ganze Land berauscht und einige Blütenblätter hatten ihren Weg dann auch in das Wasserbecken gefunden, ein wunderschön aber auch melancholischer Anblick, der passend zur Stimmung war.
To our surprise, in the shrine next to the footbath, we saw these three wooden penises, which probably serve as fertility symbols. Those symbols can be found in several shrines in Japan and are a very human and also obvious object of worship, which probably the little Anpanman doll will agree with.
Im Schrein neben dem Fußbad überraschten uns dann diese drei Holzpenisse, welche wohl aus Fruchtbarkeitssymbol dienen und die man in einigen Schreinen in Japan finden kann. Ein sehr menschliches und auch auch naheliegendes Objekt der Anbetung, dem wohl auch die kleine Anpanman-Puppe zustimmen wird.
That was our little trip to Ashinomaki Onsen. Maybe some of you are still wondering what the picture shown at the beginning is all about. This photo shows a small monument of a 5 yen coin, which is often considered a good luck charm in Japan. In this way, someone probably wants to share happiness with everyone. And we can all use a little bit of good luck.

Das war unser kleiner Ausflug nach Ashinomaki Onsen. Vielleicht wundert sich noch der eine von euch, was es mit dem eingangs bereits gezeigten Bild auf sich hat. Dieses Foto zeigt eine kleines Monument einer 5 Yen-Münze, welche in Japan oft als Glücksymbol angesehen wird. Auf diese Weise will man wohl das Glück mit allen teilen. Und ein wenig großes Glück können wir dann doch alle vertragen.

Is that a cherry blossom tree on one of the photos? Oh, how I dream of traveling to Japan. Japan is one of the countries that I really want to visit.
It is, a late blooming type called Yae-zakura. I hope some day your dream will become true!!
