School!

This single word brings up all sorts of memories for almost of us.Sometimes more and sometimes less positive, but in hindsight often a little romanticized. But not only in today's times we got all those teachers talking all that stuff into our little heads, until our minds started spinning.

No, even in the old feudal Japan they got some educational institutions and they were not always reserved only for the upper classes. As I found out during our trip to Aizu Wakamatsu, in the old time good education had become more and more important, especially at the end of the Edo period, and even or particually among the samurai.

In 1803, the Daimyo Matsudaira Katanobu, who ruled here in Aizu, founded the Nisshinkan, a school for the children of the Aizu clan. At the age of 10, the children, of course mainly the boys, were admitted to the Nishinkan and were taught not only martial arts, but also academic subjects.

The had lessons in reading and Japanese calligraphy, but also in astronomy and the social manners of the Samurai.

In the battle for Aizu-Wakamatsu, which shortly after the end of the Edo period also meant the end of the Aizu clan, the site was partially destroyed and then rebuilt in the last century at a new location according to the original plans. The area covers about 26,000 square meters and includes the martial arts hall, the observatory and a swimming pond, which is probably the oldest swimming pool in Japan.

Please join me on a little tour of the Nisshinkan, a place which also reflects the interesting architecture of the Edo period (1603-1868).

DEUTSCH

Schule!

The very first photo shows the main gate, which is adjoined by buildings on either side. Opposite the main gate is Taiseiden, a shrine dedicated to Confucius, in former times his teachings have had a great influence on education in Japan.

Next to the entrance gate you will find the big bell, a rather imposing object, which I would have liked to strike.

IMG_8650.JPG

Between the main gate and the Taiseiden there is a small garden area with bridges and some water, which is supposed to provide the right harmony in the whole complex and while learning, and also had not missed its impression with me.

Inside the buildings you can get an idea what teaching and learning meant at Samurao time. The teacher, of course equipped with katana, the sword of the samurai, sits on tatami mats made of rice straw, and so do the students. Together they practice for example, reading or Japanese calligraphy, the artful and correct writing or better painting of the Kanji characters.

On the wall you can see more Katana swords, a real Samurai must always be ready to fight, even if they have only lessons in their daily schedules.

IMG_8647.JPG

The Samurai apprentices were also taught the necessary manners, e.g. how to bow properly. Depending upon the other person one might be pretty much lying on his stomach to show his complete submission.

But also the correct handling of weapons, especially the katana, was not forgotten. The handing over of swords was often done according to a certain ritual, and especially in feudal Japan rituals had to be strictly adhered to. There were no exceptions, especially for the ruling class.

IMG_8648.JPG

And of course there was al lot of training in sports and fighting, not only with weapons but also without, in the different Japanese martial arts. Sword fighting, shooting and riding were on the agenda, the everyday life of a growing samurai was certainly no bed of roses, as it was necessary to prepare for all kind of warlike situations.

IMG_8660.JPG

And that also meant lessons in seppuku, the ritual suicide, which quite a few samurai submitted to after suffering a disgrace. Honor was more important than life, but in order not to suffer unnecessarily, the rightful way of death should at least be practiced correctly.

Another view of the Taiseiden, which is dedicated to Confucius, who had great influence on teaching and education, not only in China but also here in Japan. Inside the building you can find various exhibits and altars, which serve the worship of Confucius and his philosophy or religion.

Religion dienen.

The main hall in the Taisenden then also strongly resembles Chinese styles, several pieces in this room were also a gift from China to the Matsudaira clan in Aizu.

Suiren-Suiba Ike, probably the first swimming pool in Japan where samurai had to practice swimming in full armor. Training at that time was a hard struggle, not only in Japan, and the Nishinkan school produced many talented graduates.

Even though the Aizu clan had not survived the transition from the feudal era to the modern times, and in the last great battle in Aizu Wakamatsu the new troops of the restored imperial government were crushing the Aizu warriors, the spirit of that time and especially the history of the samurai has survived here in Aizu Wakamatsu in various ways and various places.

And from time to time, it might be a good idea to remember the "Ju no Okite", the rules of conduct of the samurai in Aizu. "Live righteously and do not seek profit" was one of the guiding principles at the Nishinkan, and discipline and education were encouraged and also required here at an early age.

The view from the astronomical observation deck once again shows almost the entire complex, where 200 years ago the aspiring samurai underwent extensive training. In the background on the left you can see the place for Kyudo, Japanese archery, which despite the advent of modern firearms was still trained until the very end of the school, and still enjoys some popularity in Japan today. Even in these days Kyudo is trained and practiced by several high school students.

That's it for today, but I will be back soon with more pictures and impressions from Aizu Wakamatsu. Let me finishy with another sentence from the rules of conduct of the Aizu samurai:
"Do not do what must not be done"

(naranu koto ha naranu mono desu)
