Truganina Park, 100 Steps to Federation

A relatively new addition to the Western Suburbs of Melbourne is the Truganina Park which was a former tip. The tip I believe was closed in 1998 and left vacant as open space. I believe around 2004 the site was further redeveloped to be a scenic attraction.

The site is the highest point between Melbourne and the famous You Yangs National Park and provides a sweeping 360 degree unobscured view of the entire area.

Due to the surrounding area being a tip much of the land was left unhindered and an ecosystem of it's own kind comprising of native plants and trees were left to grow unhindered for over 100 years.

Due to it's beautify it was left and much of the plants have been secured from vermin and predators by the inclusion of mesh fencing. Small native marsupials have since moved in and have reclaimed the site.

The inclusion of 100 Blue stone steps built by blue stones that had been disposed of at the site. They have been upcycled to create a beautiful attraction.

The beautiful natural blue stones shape much of the path that is present today.

Once toxic chemically dumped swamps have regained their healthy water levels to provide a natural water source for native plants an animals. No doubt I'd expect to see some 3 eyed fish in there. I'd say it wouldn't be safe to swim in..... but still pleasant to look at.

Atop of the 100 steps at its peak is this aart work. You might get confused at what it actually is. But alas, I have been informed that it is a time beacon commissioned by Hobsons Bay city council and created by Cameron Robbins.

Cameron has stated that the two beacons (arms) are the past and the future. A listening cone that channels into the central ear which is the present.

If you're in Melbourne and want to see clearly right across the Western suburbs I'd highly recommend a quick stop and a picnic at this beautifully reclaimed community space.

The old tip looks great now.

It's a beautiful spot. Not sure I'd want to stick around too long though. Might get some form of sickness.
