[ENG] We haven't been anywhere for a long time, and it's good to go somewhere from time to time, so it's time for another trip. This time, we have chosen Portugal as our goal. [PL] Dawno nigdzie nie byliśmy, a przecież dobrze jest raz na jakiś czas gdzieś pojechać, wiec przyszedł czas na kolejny wyjazd. Tym razem za cel obraliśmy sobie Portugalię.

The first place we visited in Portugal was Porto. The city is not too big because it has only 240,000 inhabitants, but if we add the entire metropolitan area to it, then we are dealing with quite a large metropolis with 1.5 million inhabitants. The city's entire success, in my opinion, is based solely on a perfect location. Mierjsce, where the Douro River flows into the Atlantic Ocean, was the perfect place to create a transshipment port, in which barrels of wine produced in the Douro River Valley were reloaded. After reloading barrels with wine from barges onto ships, the local wine set off on a further journey into the world. Currently, the transport of wine with transhipment in Porto continues, but is no longer such an important part of the city's economy. Currently, it seems that tourism is a much greater source of income for the city. Porto also owes its tourist popularity to its location on the steep rocky shores of the Douro River. This location, combined with the old historic buildings of the city, makes Porto one of the most scenic cities in Europe.

Pierwsze miejsce w Portugali jakie odwiedziliśmy było Porto. Miasto nie jest zbyt duże bo liczy zaledwie 240 tysięcy mieszkańców, ale jeśli dodamy do niego cały obszar metropolitarny, to wówczas mamy do czynienia z całkiem sporą metropolią mającą 1,5 miliona mieszkańców. Cały sukces miasta, w mojej opinii, opiera się wyłącznie na perfekcyjnej lokalizacji. Mierjsce gdzie rzeka Duero wpada do oceanu Atlantyckiego było idealnym miejscem aby stworzyć port przeładunkowy, w którym to porcie przeładowywano beczki z winem wyprodukowanym w dolinie rzeki Duero. Po przeładunku beczek z winem z barek na statki tutejsze wino ruszało w dalszą podróż na świat. Obecnie transport wina z przeładunkiem w Porto trwa nadal, ale nie jest już tak istotnym fragmentem gospodarki miasta. Obecnie wydaje się, że dużo większym źródłem dochodu dla miasta jest turystyka. Porto swoją turystyczną popularność również zawdzięcza w dużej mierze swojemu położeniu nad stromymi skalistymi brzegami rzeki Duero. Ta lokalizacja w połączeniu ze starą historyczną zabudową miasta sprawia że Porto jest jednym z najbardziej widokowym miastem w Europie.

During our two-day stay in Porto, we were not able to visit the entire city in detail, but what we visited, in our opinion, is enough to feel the atmosphere of Porto.
We like the church of St. Ildefons, which thanks to the rich decorations of the white and blue Azulejo tiles, characteristic of Portugal. We liked it so much, probably because it was on our daily route from the hostel to the city, so we passed it many times and it was a kind of starting point for the historic part of the city for us.

Podczas naszych dwóch dni pobytu w Porto nie byliśmy w stanie zwiedzić dokładnie całego miasta, natomiast to co zwiedziliśmy w naszej ocenie w zupełności wystarczy aby poczuć klimat Porto.
Najbardziej do gustu przypadł nam pochodzący z XVIII wieku kościół św. Ildefonsa, który dzięki bogatym zdobieniom poprzez charakterystyczne dla Portugali biało-błękitne płytki Azulejo. Polubiliśmy go tak bardzo, prawdopodobnie dlatego, że znajdował się na naszej codziennej drodze z hostelu do miasta, więc mijaliśmy go wiele razy i stanowił dla nas swego rodzaju początkiem zabytkowej części miasta.

Another example of Porto's blue architecture is the Capela das Almas chapel, covered with sixteen thousand painted tiles. The building makes a very good impression, but only from the outside. The interior of the chapel is very austere and incomparably uglier than the decorative facade.

Kolejnym przykładem błękitnej architektury Porto jest kaplica Capela das Almas pokryta szesnastoma tysiącami malowanych płytek. Budynek robi bardzo dobre wrażenie, ale tylko z zewnątrz. Wnętrze kaplicy jest bardzo surowe i nieporównywalnie brzydsze niż ozdobna fasada.

When looking at the Porto skyline, the most dominant structure is undoubtedly the defensive cathedral church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The defensive nature of this building is expressed by the fact that it is surrounded by a very neatly looking defensive wall.

Patrząc na panoramę Porto bez wątpienia najbardziej dominującą budowlą jest obronny kościół katedralny pod wezwaniem Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Obronny charakter tej budowli wyraża się poprzez to, że otoczony jest bardzo zgrabnie wyglądającym murem obronnym.

When talking about Porto, one often makes the culpable mistake of calling the buildings on both banks of the Douro River so. In fact, Porto is just buildings on the northern shore, and the river borders with the neighboring town of Vila Nova de Gaia. The history of Vila Nova de Gaia dates back to the period when Porto was a transshipment base for wine exported to the world. Therefore, the entire landscape of the southern bank of the Douro River is dominated by very old warehouses and wine cellars. It is here that all Porto wine production plants are located and a visit to such a cellar is the duty of every tourist who comes to this city.

Mówiąc o Porto często popełnia się karygodny błąd nazywając tak zabudowę po obu brzegach rzeki Duero. Tak naprawdę Porto to tylko zabudowa na północnym brzegu, a rzeka stanowi granice z sąsiednim miastem Vila Nova de Gaia. Historia miasta Vila Nova de Gaia sięga okresu, w którym Porto stanowiło bazę przeładunkową dla eksportowanego w świat wina. Dlatego cały krajobraz południowego brzegu rzeki Duero zdominowany jest przez bardzo stare magazyny i piwnice winiarskie. To właśnie tutaj znajdują się wszystkie zakłady produkcyjne wina typu Porto i wizyta w takiej piwniczce to obowiązek każdego turysty pojawiającego się w tym mieście.

Wow what a beautiful port city. Although the house looks dense, somehow I feel peace there. I don't know how busy it is in real life. And I like the architecture of the buildings there.
