The first thing we wanted to visit is one of the most famous astronomical observatories ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array). It was right next to the ITAIPU hydroelectric plant that for me was the most interesting place on my list of places to visit in South America, and at the same time the least interesting one to visit by Agatka. Unfortunately, not everything can be visited so easily. While visiting the Paraguay dam was quite simple, ALMA is not that easy, and unfortunately we only found out about it a month before our visit to this place. While hitchhiking around Patagonia, one of our drivers was a Chilean geologist from Antophagasta, whose job is to search for copper deposits in the Atacama desert. He told us that the ALMA observatory can only be visited during official tours organized by the observatory, something like weekend open days. Unfortunately, the queues for registration for such trips take up to several weeks, and during our stay in the north of Chile, there were no more vacancies. We could try to get there somehow on our own, because there were traces of cars in the sand, but I did a little ticking that if we drive our roadster two kilometers deep into the sand of the Altiplano plateau, we would bury ourselves there for good and it will only cause trouble. So we have another reason to come back to Chile for one day, now looking back, I would not be afraid to go there by car.

Pierwszą rzeczą jaką chcieliśmy odwiedzić jest jedno z najsłynniejszych obserwatoriów astronomicznych ALMA ( Atacama Large Millimeter Array ). To zaraz obok elektrowni wodnej ITAIPU było dla mnie najbardziej interesujące miejsce na liście miejsc do odwiedzenia w Ameryce Południowej i jednocześnie najmniej interesujące do odwiedzenia przez Agatkę. Niestety nie wszystko da się odwiedzić tak łatwo. O ile zwiedzanie zapory wodnej w Paragwaju było dość proste, to z ALMA nie jest tak łatwo, a niestety dowiedzieliśmy się o tym zaledwie na miesiąc przed naszą wizytą w tym miejscu. Podczas autostopowania po Patagonii jednym z naszych kierowców był Chilijczyk pochodzący z Antofagasty geolog którego praca polega na poszukiwaniu pokładów miedzi na pustyni Atakama. Powiedział nam, że obserwatorium ALMA można zwiedzić tylko i wyłącznie podczas oficjalnych wycieczek organizowanych przez obserwatorium coś jakby weekendowe dni otwarte. Niestety kolejki zapisów na takie wycieczki dochodzą do kilkunastu tygodni, a na czas naszego pobytu na północy Chile nie było już wolnych miejsc. Mogliśmy spróbować dojechać tam jakoś na własną rękę, bo na piasku były widoczne ślady po samochodach, ale trochę się cykałem, że jak wjedziemy naszą terenówka dwa kilometry w głąb piachów płaskowyżu Altiplano to zakopiemy się tam na dobre i będą z tego tylko same kłopoty. Tak więc przybył nam kolejny powód aby kiedyś jeszcze wrócić choć na jeden dzień do Chile, teraz patrząc z perspektywy czasu już nie bałbym się jechać tam autem.

Widoki i owszem były piękne, ale Rezerwat flamingów niczym nie różnił się od tego zbiorowiska flamingów znad Laguny Colorada w Boliwii, Słone jeziora Salar de Tara i Salar de Loyoques to kolejne słone jeziora, których przez ostatni tydzień widzieliśmy co najmniej kilkanaście, a z przełęczy Passo de Jama położonej na wysokości 4200m n.p.m. miało się wrażenie że na horyzoncie można dostrzec jakże dobrze nam znane kolorowe wzgórza prowincji Jujuy bo choć to jakieś 100 kilometrów odległości, to teren jest raczej płaski, a widoczność niczym niezakłócona.
