After having taken a break to travel the spectacular Route of the 7 Lakes, I return to Route 40 and continue traveling from North to South.
A journey that I started in distant Quiaca and that is coming to an end. Unique sensations, wonderful landscapes, the perfect union of man with nature.
In the morning while I was collecting the carp and packing I found a scorpion. The scorpions of Patagonia only sting. This is what some residents of the area told me later. I don't know and, just in case, I left him alone.
I am in an imprecise place in the Patagonian steppe. Far from any inhabited center, near the Altos del Rio Senguer, the end point in the route of the 13th stage.
I begin to retrace the final part of this incredible journey following the spell of Patagonia.
Alone in the middle of the steppe as a metaphor for Steppenwolf, Herman Hesse's Steppenwolf.

Después de haberme tomado un descanso para recorrer la espectacular Ruta de los 7 Lagos retomo la ruta 40 y sigo recorriéndola de Norte a Sur.
Un viaje que comencé en la lejana Quiaca y que está llegando a su fin. Sensaciones únicas, paisajes maravillosos, la comunión perfecta del hombre con la naturaleza.
A la mañana mientras recogía la carpa y empacaba encontré un escorpión. La picadura de los escorpiones de la Patagonia sólo produce escozor. Así me lo contaron algunos pobladores de la zona más tarde. No me consta y, por las dudas, lo dejé tranquilo.
Estoy en un lugar imprecisado de la estepa patagónica. Lejos de cualquier centro habitado, cerca de los Altos del Rio Senguer, punto final en el recorrido de la 13ma etapa.
Comienzo a desandar la parte final de este increíble viaje siguiendo el embrujo de la Patagonia.

Pass through Rio Mayo, the capital of shearing. Sometimes I find a gaucho. At that time, two generations crossed, two traditions: the horse and the motor.
But something in common unites us: love for the land. I see horses with sheep and guanancos grazing peacefully in the vastness of the steppe, around a small lagoon.
In the lagoon there are ducks and flamingos.
Paso por Rio Mayo, la capital de la esquila. A veces encuentro un gaucho. En ese momento se cruzan dos generaciones, dos tradiciones: el caballo y el motor.
Pero nos une algo en común: el amor por la tierra. Veo caballos junto a ovejas y guanancos pastando tranquilamente en la inmensidad de la estepa, alrededor de una pequeña laguna.
En la laguna hay patos y flamencos.
I contemplate nature in all its simplicity but at the same time in all its splendor.
But I must continue the journey. It is the third week of travel and all the bones of my body demand a true rest, in a true bed, with all the luxuries of modern civilization.
Contemplo extasiado la naturaleza en toda su sencillez pero a su vez en todo su esplendor.
Pero debo continuar el viaje. Es la tercera semana de viaje y todos los huesos de mi cuerpo reclaman un verdadero descanso, en una verdadera cama, con todos los lujos de la civilización moderna.
I pass the reference that marks the birth of the Perito Moreno and the Cueva de las Manos. I see more and more cyclists.
And every time I get closer to that monument of humanity as Unesco has just declared. The ice colossus. The Perito Moreno Glacier.
Also the Cueva de las Manos is a World Heritage Site. It contains paintings of the first settlers of Patagonia with hunting images and the emblematic hands. Millennia of rock art referred to in a single protected place.
Those same animals that I draw thousands of years ago I see live every step of the way along Route 40.
The entrance to the caves is limited, which contributes to preserving the place from the destructive desire of tourists to take a souvenir.
As a sign in the Quebrada de las Flechas says: don't take anything, leave just a sigh.
Two rheas suddenly crossed the road and I was forced to stop abruptly and look for the rubble on the shoulder. There are rheas everywhere.
Paso la referencia que marca el nacimiento del Perito Moreno y la Cueva de las Manos. Cada vez veo más ciclistas.
Y cada vez me acerco más a ese monumento de la humanidad como justamente lo ha declarado la Unesco. El coloso de hielo. El Glaciar Perito Moreno.
También la Cueva de las Manos es Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Contiene pinturas de los primeros pobladores de la Patagonia con imágenes de caza y las emblemáticas manos.
Milenios de arte rupestre referidos en un solo lugar protegido.
Esos mismos animales que dibujados miles de años atrás veo en vivo a cada paso por la ruta 40.
El ingreso a las cuevas es limitado lo cuál contribuye a preservar el lugar del afán destructivo de los turistas por llevarse un recuerdo.
Como dice un letrero en la Quebrada de las Flechas: no se lleve nada, deje solo un suspiro.
Dos ñandúes atraviesan de improviso la ruta y me vo obligado a frenar bruscamente y a buscar el ripio de la banquina. Hay ñandúes por todas partes.
Night is approaching and I don't find any inhabited places nearby either. I pitch the tent and get ready to sleep under the stars.
Se acerca la noche y tampoco encuentro ningún lugar habitado cerca. Armo la carpa y me preparo a dormir bajo las estrellas.
