Odesa guidebook: Must-see places #24 Hotel "Velyka Moskovska" on Deribasovskaya

In the very center of Odesa, there is one amazing building that can be viewed for hours! I often walked by, photographed it, but did not know exactly its history and, in general, what its purpose was.

But the other day, studying the map of the city in search of interesting places, I found out that this is a hotel from 1900, which has quite interesting architecture and "new life". This is the hotel "Velyka Moskovska" (Big Moscow).

History of the hotel "Velyka Moskovska"

Hotel "Velyka Moskovska" was built in the early 1900s when the economy in Europe was booming, but at the time when the hotel was founded - in 1902 in Odesa there was a decline in construction and in general a certain contraction of economic development.

Moscow businessmen Dementiev and Vasiliev, who supplied tea from China to Russia, bought Biryukov's old house at 29 Deribasovskaya Street in the shopping malls of Greek Square to build a hotel instead.

The building was designed by Lev Wlodek, Tovie Fischel, and Milman, who also built the Mendelevich Passage in Odesa. The hotel was designed in the style of an Art Nouveau hotel and decorated with rich stucco work by Fishel and Milman.

The Greater Moscow Hotel, owned by Lyashenko and Baysupov, was opened in the newly built house of Dementiev and Vasiliev. The hotel belonged to the category of first-class, but not the most expensive. On the ground floor, there were trade premises: tea shop, lamp shop, haberdashery shop. There was also a restaurant "Tatar".

In the second half of the XX century (during the Soviet period) on the ground floor of the building housed the store "Golden Key" (branded store of the local confectionery factory), which sold chocolates and confectionery, and was considered the best in the city and the cinema "Chronicle". screening of a documentary film.

By the way, ordinary Odesans also liked to live in this hotel for the sake of a bath, an elevator, and electricity.
And in the ad they wrote:

Luxurious, comfortable, available in Odesa hotel "Velyka Moskovska", Deribasovskaya street, opposite the city garden, overlooking the sea. The hotel is located in the best central and commercial part of the city, close to all theaters, boulevards, sea baths, post office, telegraph office, administrative and government offices. With the best "Tatar" restaurant. Luxuriously furnished rooms from 1 ruble. Baths. Electric lighting. Steam heating. Lifting machine.

Hotel reconstruction

By the end of the 90s of the XX century, the building was very old and lost most of the stucco decoration. In 2006, the City Council of the Odesa City Council approved the reconstruction projects of the Velyka Moskovska Hotel, proposed by the Incor-Group company, which was engaged in the restoration of historic buildings in Odesa. The restoration project was designed by Odesa architect Mykhailo Povstanyuk.

Before the restoration began, the investor, Odesa businessman Ruslan Tarpan, initiated research in the archives of Vienna, where the hotel's architect Lev Vlodek spent the last years. Specialists were able to reproduce all the typical elements of modern decor based on original drawings and sketches. On the facade, 21,000 elements of authentic decor have been restored in their original forms.

Stone vases also appeared along the perimeter of the roof. In 2014, crystal balls were brought from Italy. All these elements correspond to the original plans of the architect but were lost during the 1917 revolution. Today the building is still closed. The hotel is closed, but renovations are underway inside. Therefore, I was unable to photograph anything inside.

the place is impressive for its design and the great amount of details ...

I am surprised every time that all these details were on buildings and several hundred years ago
It is, you know, like the pyramids of the Egyptians. It seems like they don't know anything yet in terms of science and technology, but incredible buildings are being built
