On the way to The Antennas mountain and beyond, Aragua - Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

in Pinmapple2 years ago
In mid-April of this year I made an excursion to a place I already knew but with the novelty that we would go by a different route than the first time I went, and that's why I signed up with my sister. It's a somewhat long route, round trip is about 26 km, so we started early, at 6:30 in the morning.

The meeting and departure point was the entrance of La Bandera Hill located in La Victoria, Aragua state (Venezuela), from there we advanced along the concrete road and before the detour to the ascent we continued straight on the dirt road that goes to a valley.

The mountain of The Antennas, our goal, is in a sector known as Loma Lisa, while we saw it in the distance, we crossed several parched parts, some burned by recent fires.

In this area there are some farmhouses with plantations, fruit trees and also chickens and some cows and horses.

Unfortunately, we also came across an area full of garbage....

The day was spectacular, as it was still early in the morning and the sun didn't burn us.

After almost an hour of walking on flat terrain, it was time to start ascending.

With us came a little dog that always accompanies the man who organizes these excursions in his daily walks. She doesn't belong to him but she usually goes to his house to eat, she lives in a nearby university, but when she realizes that there is a route, she signs up, she is a hiking dog hehe.

We continued climbing and here the dryness and scorched earth were more notorious.

Gradually we reached a height from where we began to have great views of the mountains, nearby towns like Guacamaya and the city of La Victoria.

In this part the path became narrow and at some points the vegetation on the sides was quite high, you can see that almost no one passes through here.

We reached a flat area and took a short break to calmly hydrate and recharge our energies.

The climb got steeper here so the group dispersed a bit as everyone went at the pace they could.

It was nice to see the greenery amidst the dry patches of earth, it must be that the soil absorbs moisture and keeps many plants fresh.

We stopped for a few minutes to wait for those who had stayed far behind, for some of the people who came it was their first long walk and didn't know what they had gotten into hahaha, but anyway they looked motivated with the challenge.

DSCF5164.JPG

I went ahead with other people and my sister who was a little further behind told me that there was an abandoned inn over there, I didn't see it but she went in with some companions and took pictures. As there were paragliding and icaro competitions in these mountains a few years ago, maybe people stayed there.

DSCF5169.JPG

We saw more fire-swept land here.

At this point of the route the trail was quite covered by vegetation and we were stalked for a long time by a plant, no kidding, they are thin branches that protrude and are called "jala pa'tras" (pull it back), the reason? Well, their small and sharp thorns get embedded in your skin or clothes and besides scratching you or tearing/fraying your clothes, they make you stop to free yourself from their claws.

After this stretch we could already see The Antennas, we were not far away.

On this route we saw signs of animal and human presence, I think there are people messing with motorcycles around here.

Here, too, fires raged, although I'm sure those responsible for this facility didn't allow the fire to reach these important communication towers.

In a small house there was a watchman at the door, he was surprised when he saw us arrive, he must not be used to so many people visiting him hehe, he greeted us and entered, the sound of the radio was heard far away, it's certainly a very lonely place to work and the music helps.

Finally we sat down along the esplanade to rest, eat, talk and enjoy the fabulous view of the mountains and valleys of Aragua state. As I mentioned at the beginning, due to its excellent conditions, national and international paragliding competitions used to be held on this mountain, and will surely be held again at some point. It is also a place where mountain bikers and runners come to train.

We spent about an hour in The Antennas, it was 11:00 am and we started our way back amidst the heat and some "jala pa'tras" branches.

We all thought we were going to go back the same way we came, but one of the guides said it was better to take the path that led to the town of El Consejo, a village near La Victoria, which was shorter and flatter, as we didn't know, it seemed a good option.

Here we noticed more human presence, there are some crops in the distance and water intakes, although we didn't see anyone outside the people in the group. Several people took the opportunity to refill water, even the little dog drank, she was exhausted, surely she didn't think that the route would be so long, sometimes she went ahead of us to rest for a while under some shade while we arrived.

Although the route was mostly downhill, the inclement heat kept us dry, I had carried 3 liters of water in my water bag and I didn't have much left at that point.

We had been walking for about an hour and a half and we were all wondering how much farther, suddenly we saw civilization in the distance and we thought it was not much farther, in any way...

DSCF5293.JPG

There was nothing left to do but go on and laugh, a kind of suffocating steam was rising from the ground and there were live fires in the mountains in front of us.

DSCF5300.JPG

DSCF5302.JPG

There were almost no shady places around here so stopping to rest for a long time was not convenient, we had to continue, at least we could see closer the town of El Consejo or so we thought hahaha.

DSCF5311.JPG

We climbed a hill to cut the road, reached a flatter part and then the descents became steeper.

When we had been walking for about three hours since we left The Antennas mountain behind, we saw the highway, now we were close to El Consejo.

DSCF5326.JPG

Along the way we came across a curious installation, an oxidation lagoon of Hacienda Santa Teresa, famous for the production of its exquisite rum.

DSCF5328.JPG

Finally we reached a bridge, crossed under it and we were already in the fields of Hacienda Santa Teresa. We all agreed that the road we took going up to The Antennas was shorter than the one we took going back, but well, you have to look at the positive, we walked through new landscapes haha.

A few steps later, about 3:00 in the afternoon, we arrived at El Consejo, exhausted and thirsty, the dog got lost for a moment in a creek that we crossed and several people in the group took a while to rescue her. Then we sat on a sidewalk to wait for a companion who went to get his car because he was going to give my sister, me and a boy a ride to La Victoria, we also took the dog with us because we had to leave her where she lives, in the university institute, the poor girl was so tired that she fell asleep.

And so ended this long adventure, which as measured by a colleague with an App at the end was not 26 but more than 30 km, I hope you have not seemed so long this publication...
