¡Saludos comunidad viajera! Hoy comparto con ustedes la segunda parte de mi viaje por el estado Amazonas, Venezuela, y en esta ocasión los invito a darle un vistazo a Puerto Ayacucho, la capital, el único centro urbano de esta selvática región.
As I told in the first part (you can read here), we traveled many hours to get to this city on a journey with very diverse landscapes. It was already around six in the afternoon when we arrived at the house of Douglas's mother, the guy who invited my friend Zoraibeth and me to Amazonas, so we didn't go around to see something of the place but decided to rest and do the complete tour of Puerto Ayacucho the next day.
Tal como conté en la primera parte (puedes leer aquí), viajamos muchas horas para llegar a esta ciudad en un recorrido con paisajes muy diversos. Ya eran alrededor de las seis de la tarde cuando llegamos a la casa de la mamá de Douglas, el muchacho que nos invitó a mi amiga Zoraibeth y a mí al Amazonas, entonces no dimos una vuelta por ahí para ver algo del lugar sino que decidimos descansar y hacer el paseo completo por Puerto Ayacucho al día siguiente.
We left early in the morning and went to the center, at first glance the city is quite quiet, at least in Bolívar Square and its surroundings, which was what we visited first. Then there is a more commercial part where you can see the bustle, the people in the stores, etc., although the general atmosphere that predominates is that of a small town.
Salimos temprano en la mañana y nos fuimos para el centro, a primera vista la ciudad es bastante tranquila, al menos en la Plaza Bolívar y sus alrededores, que fue lo que visitamos primero. Luego sí hay una parte más comercial donde se ve el ajetreo, la gente en las tiendas, etc., aunque el ambiente general que predomina es el de un pueblo pequeño.
It is a relatively young city, it was founded in 1924, in contrast, it is located on the oldest geological formation on the planet, the Guiana Massif, characterized by infinite savannahs, large rocks and tepuis (plateau-type mountains). The weather around here is hot and humid.
Es una ciudad relativamente joven, fue fundada en 1924, en contraste, se encuentra sobre la formación geológica más antigua del planeta, el Macizo Guayanés, caracterizado por infinitas sabanas, grandes rocas y tepuyes (montañas tipo meseta). El clima por aquí es caluroso y húmedo.
We walked through Bolívar Square, located on Río Negro avenue and we observed the María Auxiliadora Cathedral in front, a not very old building, since it was built in 1952. Unlike my friend, I'm not much about visiting churches but I had read that this temple was interesting from what was seen inside, since it had some striking murals. It had to be checked, so we went inside.
Caminamos por la Plaza Bolívar, ubicada en la avenida Río Negro y observamos al frente la Catedral María Auxiliadora, una edificación no muy vieja, ya que fue construida en 1952. Al contrario de mi amiga, yo no soy mucho de visitar iglesias pero había leído que este templo era interesante por lo que se veía adentro, ya que contaba con unos llamativos murales. Había que comprobarlo, así que entramos.
The murals really seemed very original to me, far from what is usually seen in churches, I liked the style of the painting, also the color because it includes representative elements of the Amazon.
Realmente los murales me parecieron muy originales, lejos de lo que se suele ver en las iglesias, el estilo de la pintura me gustó, también el colorido porque incluye elementos representativos del Amazonas.
When leaving this temple we cross the street and a little beyond Bolívar Square is the Indian Market, a square full of stalls where the ethnic groups of the region sell all kinds of crafts and typical products such as Catara hot sauce, made with yucca juice, bachacos (a kind of ants), hot pepper, salt and other spices.
Al salir de este templo cruzamos la calle y un poco más allá de la Plaza Bolívar está el Mercado de los Indios, una plaza llena de puestos donde las etnias de la región comercializan todo tipo de artesanías y productos típicos como por ejemplo la salsa picante Catara, hecha con jugo de yuca, bachacos (una especie de hormigas), ají picante, sal y otras especias.
I love the markets, and if they are indigenous much more because there are always curious things, very local products that are rarely marketed in other parts of the country, it is also an opportunity to talk with the natives and learn something about their culture.
Me encantan los mercados, y si son indígenas mucho más porque siempre hay cosas curiosas, productos muy locales que raramente se comercializan en otras partes del país, además es una oportunidad para conversar con los nativos y aprender algo de su cultura.
Amazonas is not only the second largest state in Venezuela (183,500 km2), it is also the one with the least population (about 180,000 people), but it is here where the largest number of indigenous groups in the country are concentrated, such as the Yanomamis, Piaroas, Yekuanas, Barés, Jivis, Piapocos, Hotis, Baniba, among others, who represent the majority of the state's inhabitants.
Amazonas no sólo es el segundo estado más grande de Venezuela (183.500 Km2), es también el que tiene menos población (unas 180.000 personas), pero es aquí donde se concentran la mayor cantidad de grupos indígenas del país, como los Yanomamis, Piaroas, Yekuanas, Barés, Jivis, Piapocos, Hotis, Baniba, entre otros, quienes representan la mayoría de los habitantes del estado.
Our exploration of the city continued and we arrived at one of the most promoted sites in Puerto Ayacucho, the House on the Stone, in La Florida urbanization. As I said before, in the geography of Amazonas there are many huge rocks scattered around, on one of them located in the middle of the city, someone built a house.
Nuestra exploración de la ciudad continuó y llegamos a uno de los sitios más promocionados de Puerto Ayacucho, la Casa sobre la Piedra, en la urbanización La Florida. Como dije antes, en la geografía del Amazonas hay muchas rocas enormes desperdigadas por ahí, sobre una de ellas ubicada en plena ciudad, alguien construyó una casa.
This house was made by Juan Riverola Giralt in 1965, he was of Cuban origin and dedicated to construction. He came to this city at that time and it occurred to him to live on some granite rocks, something original, right? To access the house you have to climb a long staircase, many also know it as the “house of Tarzan”.
Esta casa la hizo Juan Riverola Giralt en 1965, él era de origen cubano y se dedicaba a la construcción. Llegó a esta ciudad en esa época y se le ocurrió vivir sobre unas rocas de granito, ¿original no? Para acceder a la vivienda hay que subir una larga escalera, muchos la conocen también como la “casa de Tarzán”.
Over time it became an icon of Puerto Ayacucho and is currently maintained by the mayor's office as a tourist attraction, it is also a viewpoint of the city. It's a pity that we couldn't go up to see it inside, it was closed to the public the day we went.
Con el tiempo se volvió un icono de Puerto Ayacucho y actualmente es mantenida por la alcaldía como atracción turística, es además un mirador de la ciudad. Es una lástima que no hayamos podido subir para verla por dentro, estaba cerrada al público el día que fuimos.
We continued walking through that same area and we ran into a giant toad, no joke, its intense yellow stood out among the greenery.
Continuamos paseando por esa misma zona y nos topamos con un sapo gigante, no es broma, su intenso amarillo sobresalía entre la vegetación.
This is the Aparo Acoustic Cultural Center, which is located on Perimetral avenue in Puerto Ayacucho.
Se trata del Centro Cultural Aparo Acústico, que está ubicado en la avenida Perimetral de Puerto Ayacucho.
There, many national and international events are held and its main attraction is the acoustic shell in the shape of an aparo toad, a species that lives in the Maroa municipality, in the southwestern of Amazonas state and is also associated with an indigenous legend of giant toads, from hence the size of this structure. There was no cultural activity when we went but we still enjoyed touring the place and taking photos.
Allí se hacen muchos eventos nacionales e internacionales y su principal atractivo es la concha acústica en forma de sapo aparo, una especie que habita en el municipio Maroa, al sudoeste del estado Amazonas y que además está asociada con una leyenda indígena de sapos gigantes, de ahí el tamaño de esta estructura. No había ninguna actividad cultural cuando fuimos pero igual disfrutamos recorriendo el lugar y tomando fotos.
It was already more than five in the afternoon so we got in the car to get to the boardwalk in time, the sunsets over the Orinoco River are another of the things to see around here, the colors of the sky turn a tone purple.
Ya eran más de las cinco de la tarde así que nos montamos en el carro para llegar a tiempo al malecón, los atardeceres sobre el río Orinoco son otra de las cosas que hay que ver por aquí, los colores del cielo se ponen de un tono púrpura.
The next day in the morning we went to the Monsignor Enzo Ceccarelli Ethnological Museum of Amazonas, which is on Av. Río Negro, near Bolívar Square.
Al día siguiente en la mañana fuimos al Museo Etnológico de Amazonas Monseñor Enzo Ceccarelli, que está en la Av. Río Negro, cerca de la Plaza Bolívar.
I really like museums that show people and their culture, it must be because I worked for almost three years at the Caracas Science Museum and I became familiar with these issues, many exhibitions of this type have been mounted there.
Me gustan mucho los museos que muestran a los pueblos y su cultura, debe ser porque trabajé casi tres años en el Museo de Ciencias de Caracas y me familiaricé con estos temas, allí se han montado muchas exposiciones de este tipo.
In this ethnological museum you can see objects from the most important native groups of Amazonas state and learn a little about their way of life, their worldview. In our tour of the six exhibition rooms we had an indigenous person as our guide, although I don't remember which ethnic group he belonged to.
En este museo etnológico se pueden ver objetos de los grupos nativos más importantes del estado Amazonas y aprender un poco sobre su forma de vida, su cosmovisión. En nuestro recorrido por las seis salas de exposición tuvimos como guía a un indígena, aunque no recuerdo a cuál etnia pertenecía.
The exhibits show the history of the indigenous Piaroa, Guajibo or Jivi, Yanomami, Arawak, and Yekuana, there are original objects and also some reproductions.
Las exhibiciones muestran la historia de los indígenas Piaroa, Guajibo o Jivi, Yanomami, Arawak, y Yekuana, hay objetos originales y también algunas reproducciones.
The information they provide is very valuable, even though the museography already looked a bit worn, it is expensive and laborious to renovate this type of space.
La información que brindan es muy valiosa, aún cuando la museografía ya lucía un poco gastada, es costoso y trabajoso renovar este tipo de espacios.
After getting to know these places in Puerto Ayacucho, the rest of the days in Amazonas state we dedicate most of all to its exuberant nature, something that I will show you in the next posts.
