Everything started with the evening before with a long relaxing bath in jacuzzi. The alarm was ringing at 5 o'clock in the morning, but due to the night before we just ignored the wake up call. Instead of that we took it very slowly and complited packing the equipments to go for the hike at 9 o'clock (four hours later then we planned).

We went with the car to the starting point in small village Krn, which is around 13 kilometers from Kobarid in Soca Valley.

The heaviness of the backpacks was caused by the load of water. Reason for this is because in Krn mountain there is no water supplies or springs.

At the beginning there is a makadam road that serves for farmers to reach to the mountain cottages, where they make cheese and other milk products like cottage cheese, butter and yogurt. Along the way we saw lots of cows which were chilling in the grass and hidding from the sun in the shadows of the trees. We passed quite a few of the houses before the road became more steep and more like a hiking path. The way up was quite difficult because of the lack of shadow and in the beginning of the road there were lots of flies all over us. Luckly they left us when we reached certain hights.

The serpentine route was very frustrating because it felt that we'll never reach, but having the finish line always in the corner of our eyes.
After lots of sweat and many mini breakes we managed to get to the mountain cabin (Gomilščkovo zavetišče), which is 10 minutes below the mountain peak. In the cabin is living only one guy who is taking care for all the hikers by preparing food or shelter if needed. All the supply is brought every 14 days with the helicopter. General lack of water is causing that the water supply tanks are empty and water there is precious. Even the toilet was out of service. From there we already had a good view on the surroundings. We've noticed that the forest was reminding more on the autumn with falling brown colour leaves. Sadly we spotted also two fires in the nearby area, which is very untipical for this region.

After refreshments we left the backpacks in the hut and headed to the peak. On the way up Steffen discovered the secret tunel to the the other side of the mountain where we did some mindful yoga close to the appendix of the mountain.

Finding our way back through the dark tunel we reached the top. The view was amazing, we saw the other parts of the Julian Alps and beyond. We were able to see the Mediteranean sea and Großglockner on the other side.

We returned back to the hut to pick the backpacks. On the way up we passed by lots of day trip hikers and most of them take the same way down instead of going to the direction of Batognica (another mountain in the same range) where you can take another path down.

On the way to Batognica we observed the whole complex of underground tunels, remainings of the first world war that's been going on here between Austro-Hungarian and Italien armies from 1915 to 1917. We saw lots of bombs, mines, leftovers from the war like wood of the constructions and lots of barbed wire fence and also some gigantic cannons. Wandering around the place made us realize how crazy the war must have gone on in this place. On one signboard we read that there was an explotion of more than 4000 kilograms of nitroglycerin. We asked ourself how did they manage the logistics of bringing all the equipment, food, water, building material, bombs and weapons up to this difficult path.

With all this impressions we were finding the cool spot for our tent on the edge of the mountain. Later we realized that this was a platform for a supply lift they had from the valley. We enjoyed the sunset and went early to sleep because we were already excited to see the sunrise the next morning.

Crawling out of the sleeping bags at 4 o'clock in the morning into the cold was thousnd times payed off by seeing this amazing sun awakeing behind the mistical mountains.

To warm up ourselves we quickly packed the tent and continued the hike down the Lužnica valley where you can also see a small lake, but as it's full of war material is not recommended for drinkingbor swimming.

Reaching back home we wanted to know more about what has happened there, so after a break we went to visit the war museum in Kobarid. You can check the museum here: https://www.kobariski-muzej.si/en/

It's full of interesting history information of the region. Soon we will tell you more about our finding and experience in the area.

Yes, of course - we need to protect our planet as it gives us so much. We have so much to see and explore. Sometimes the road and hike can be challenging but it pays off, specially with the view, the sunrise and inspiring conversations through nature. 💚
I hope we can inspire more people to protect and appreciate this treasure. 🌏
