Long walk to visit the memorial church Javorca, Slovenia

in Pinmapplelast year (edited)

The visit to the church Javorca was an active day hike. We actually walked around 10 or even more km to visit this beautiful place. We found out, that you can as well park with your car closer to the location and have than only around 20 min walk. But this is possible when you are visiting off season as the road is very narrow and for two cars it's very difficult to find a spot to pass each other. For that in the season, goes a minibus every hour.

As we reached the memorial church, we where already very hungry and due to bad weather and rain we decided to take shelter close by. Cooking some decisions vegetable curry with coconut was warming our bellies.

The way back was very nice and we decided to come back very soon to this area as it has still lots of places we like to discover. Next time we want to see another natural spring from the river Tolminka. And hopefully it will be better weather too.

Here we share the text from the signboard from the way up and in front of the church:

"THE WALK OF PEACE FROM THE ALPS TO THE ADRIATIC

The peace that will initially embrace you on the way from the Alps to the Adriatic has not always been so natural in these places. The wheel of history and the course of the Soda, which ranks among the most beautiful alpine rivers worldwide, are turbulent and un-predictable. A century after the WW1, which engulfed the world, we have linked the historical heritage into the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic. All from the Julian Alps across the Brda hills to the Adriatic Sea we strive to slow down the pace of life and invite visitors to relaxation or reflection - a hundred years after the Isonzo Front, one of the most extensive warfare in high mountains.
On the about 400 kilometres long trekking route, which runs on the territories of both Slovenia and Italy, you can enjoy the beauty of nature and discover the heritage of the WW1 on your own or in the company of an experienced guide.“

“The Church of the Holy Spirit at Javorca in the valley of Polo was built by Austrian soldiers in 1916, to the design of the Austrian architect Remgius Geyling.
The outside of the church is decorated with stylised coats-of-arms of all the monarchies and lands of Austria-Hungary. The interior is classic art nouveau, adorned with colourful decorations. The idea of a memorial church is communicated through engraved oak plaques bearing the names of all the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who lost their lives on the hills of Vodil vrh, Mrzli vh, Rdedi rob and Sleme.
Owing to its predominantly wooden construc-tion, prone to rapid decay, and severe weather conditions, the church has undergone several renovations, the most recent one being in 2005.
The memorial church in Javorca was proclaimed a historical monument with the 1990 Order declaring natural and historical monuments and natural attractions in the Municipality of Tolmin.”

Hi @thefootprint, you also have a very nice view of Javorca from the village of Cadrg. But the road to this village is also very narrow and steep, and it is difficult for two cars to meet. It's worth the effort, though, because you can buy some really good Tolmin cheese there.

Hello 🌼 Yes, we want to visit this lonely village as well in the future. Even though I'm used to driving on damaged, very narrow roads here around the valley, this path to Javorca and Cadrg still seems very challenging.
The cheese from the mountains and Tolminc we have already tried and I must say it's delicious! 😋 This places here around are really cool to explore. 🌳🏞🏔

Ha ha, I agree 👍, but I've been browsing a bit through your posts and I saw that you wander a lot in the Soča Valley. You know it better than I do 😉 I assume you are a local from there. I am from NG. Lep pozdrav!

Yess, you are right - we are currently based in Soca Valley, before we were in the capital Ljubljana.😁🏔
If so, than when we'll be around, we can call you for a cup of coffee 🙃☕️
Lep pozdrav tudi tebi 🙂
