Hi everyone,
I returned now from a trip to Matera. It was a long time I wanted to visit this particular city in Southern Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The capital of the Basilicata region is located in the Murgia plateau where the rock predominates.

Salve a tutti,

Called “City of stones” it is made up of two ancient and characteristic districts called “Sasso Caveoso” and “Sasso Barisano both dug into the tuff.
This territory is rich in prehistoric settlements that overlook the canyon formed by the erosion of the waters of the Gravina river.

This small river divides the "Sassi" from the "Parco della Murgia" and from the "Churches"
This is a large area inaccessible, rich in archaeological sites and asked in the rock, where in some we can still find Byzantine frescoes.
The typical rock of the tuff di Matera has allowed the inhabitants to dig inside to make the houses and churches and the urthermore make a hydraulic system for water maintenance.

People were extremely poor with a high rate of infant mortality and many diseases. In these "houses" actually caves have lived very numerous families with pets
These animals served to work the earth, like cows and donkeys. There were also hens. The animals were sacred for these families because in addition to working, they warmed the house in winter.

But returning to our trip, in Matera thanks to intricate urban development, is possible to walk on the roofs, like that of the Santa Lucia church, where a large Medieval Necropolis develops, with about 100 rock-cut tombs.
“The dead above the living”.

The "Sassao Borisano" has been recovered in recent years and now for example the houses, are residential houses, luxury hotels, coffee, art galleries, artisan workshops, restaurants where you can enjoy the tasty kitchen of Matera.
