Hey guys! Today I want to tell you about the last stop of our Mexico road trip. This time it's really an insider tip, which is rather unknown even among Mexicans. Only by a YouTube video I came across the castle of Chautla and neither my girlfriend, who is Mexican, nor her parents or friends knew this place. Whether a visit is worthwhile despite the moderate popularity, you will learn in this post.
Hallo Leute! Heute möchte ich euch vom letzten Stopp unseres Mexiko-Roadtrips berichten. Diesmal handelt es sich wirklich um einen Insider-Tipp, der selbst unter Mexikanern eher unbekannt ist. Nur durch ein YouTube-Video bin ich auf das Schloss von Chautla gestoßen und weder meine Freundin, die Mexikanerin ist, noch ihre Eltern oder Freunde kannten diesen Ort. Ob sich ein Besuch trotz der mäßigen Bekanntheit lohnt, erfahrt ihr in diesem Beitrag.
It is not so easy to find Chautla. Although it is ideally located on the route between Puebla and Mexico City, you can hardly find any references to it. The last kilometers lead through a rather unfriendly village, where we felt anything but comfortable. Even from the car park of the castle you cannot guess which wonderful place you are about to enter. Chautla, in fact, can only be reached on foot. First, you have to walk through a huge estate, including its own park, which used to be privately owned and is now a hotel. We had to search a bit to finally find the right path to the lake and castle.
Es ist gar nicht so einfach, Chautla zu finden. Obwohl es ideal für einen Zwischenstopp auf der Strecke zwischen Puebla und Mexiko City liegt, findet man kaum hinweise darauf. Die letzten Kilometer führten durch ein eher unfreundliches Dorf, in dem wir uns alles andere als wohl fühlten. Selbst vom Parkplatz des Schlosses kann man noch nicht erahnen, welchen wundervollen Ort man in Kürze betreten wird. Chautla kann nämlich nur zu Fuß erreicht werden. Dabei durchquert man zuerst ein riesiges Anwesen, inklusive eigenem Park, das sich früher in Privatbesitz befand und heute ein Hotel ist. Wir mussten schon etwas suchen, um endlich den richtigen Pfad zum See und zum Schloss zu finden.
However, after paying a small entrance fee of 50 pesos, we arrived and couldn't wait to cross the land connection that splits the lake in two, to reach the gorgeous, somewhat English-looking castle. It was built in 1898 and was privately owned for a long time before it became open to the public. Today it is even allowed to fish and camp at the lake.
Nach dem bezahlen einer kleinen Eintrittsgebühr von 50 Pesos kamen wir aber doch an und konnten es kaum erwarten, die Landverbindung, die den See in zwei Teile spaltet, zu überqueren, um das traumhafte, etwas englisch anmutende Schloss zu erreichen. Es wurde im Jahr 1898 errichtet und befand sich lange Zeit im Privatbesitz, bevor es öffentlich zugänglich wurde. Heute ist es sogar erlaubt, am See zu fischen und zu campen.
The interiors of the castle are not particularly worth seeing. Nevertheless, via a narrow staircase it is possible to reach the roof terrace, from where you can enjoy a fantastic view over the lake and the surrounding forests. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm came up and so we had to flee to the restaurant behind the building pretty soon. By the way, I can only recommend this restaurant. The food is excellent and surprisingly cheap.
Die Innenräume des Schlosses sind nicht sonderlich sehenswert. Dafür ist es aber möglich, über eine schmale Treppe die Dachterrasse zu erreichen, von der man einen traumhaften Ausblick über den See und die umgebenden Wälder genießen kann. Leider zog ein Gewitter auf und so mussten wir recht bald in das Restaurant hinter dem Gebäude flüchten. Dieses kann ich übrigens nur empfehlen. Das Essen ist hervorragend und überraschend günstig.
After the thunderstorm, we walked along the lakeshore for a bit before heading back to Mexico City. In any case, we were glad to have visited this romantic place. So that's how our adventurous road trip ended. We were inspired by the many different impressions that we were able to collect in these few days. We definitely have a desire for more and so the next Mexico road trip is already in planning!
Nach dem Gewitter spazierten wir noch etwas am Seeufer entlang, bevor wir dann den Weg zurück nach Mexiko City antraten. Auf jeden Fall waren wir froh, diesen romantischen Ort besucht zu haben. So endete also unser abenteuerlicher Roadtrip. Wir waren begeistert von den vielen unterschiedlichen Eindrücken, die wir in den wenigen Tagen sammeln konnten. Wir haben definitiv Lust auf mehr bekommen und der nächste Mexiko-Roadtrip ist somit bereits in Planung!

Wow, super Fotos, und total der Geheimtipp! Jetzt kann ich's selber kaum abwarten wieder in Mexiko zu sein, und diesen Schloss mit meiner Frau zu besuchen. Nach Deiner Beschreibung kann ich mir vorstellen, dass sie selbst als Mexikanerin davon noch nie etwas gehört hat. Aber gefallen wird er ihr bestimmt!
