Hey guys! Today I'm getting back to you with a new travel report from Mexico City. While St. Peter's Basilica in Rome or St. Paul's Cathedral in London will be familiar to almost all of you, the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe is rather unknown, although it also belongs to the largest churches in the world. I visited the cathedral in the north-east of Mexico City and was not disappointed.
Hallo Leute! Heute melde ich mich wieder mit einem neuen Reisebericht aus Mexico City bei euch. Während der Petersdom in Rom oder die St. Paul's Cathedral in London wohl für so gut wie jeden von euch ein Begriff sein werden, ist die Basilika Unserer Lieben Frau von Guadalupe doch eher unbekannt, obwohl auch sie zu den größten Kirchen der Welt gehört. Ich habe die Kathedrale im Nordosten von Mexico City besucht und wurde nicht enttäuscht.
As I did not know much about this place before my visit, I was surprised to find not only one, but several churches there. Besides the huge main building, which can accommodate up to 40,000 people, there is also an old basilica and two other, smaller places of worship. By the way, Guadalupe is the name of the district in which this Roman Catholic pilgrimage site is located.
Da ich mich vor meinem Besuch nicht sonderlich genau über diesen Ort informierte, war ich erstmal überrascht, dass sich hier gleich mehrere Kirchen befinden. Neben dem riesigen Hauptgebäude, das bis zu 40.000 Menschen Platz bietet, gibt es auch eine alte Basilika, und zwei weitere, kleinere Gotteshäuser. Guadalupe heißt übrigens der Stadtteil, in dem sich diese römisch-katholische Pilgerstätte befindet.
In the meantime, I learned that Guadalupe is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the world. It is visited by millions of people every year and a trip to this place is the second most visited Christian pilgrimage after Rome. On the day of my visit, the huge Plaza de las Americas was also very crowded.
In der Zwischenzeit habe ich erfahren, dass Guadalupe einer der wichtigsten Wallfahrtsorte weltweit ist. Er wird jährlich von Millionen von Menschen besucht und eine Reise an diesen Ort ist nach Rom auf Platz zwei der meistbegangenen, christlichen Pilgerfahrten. Auch am Tag meiner Besichtigung war der riesige Plaza de las Americas sehr gut besucht.
There is a hill with a small church directly behind the cathedral forecourt, which can be reached by a few stairs. So I was able to climb another great vantage point and see the holy place from above. By the way, the way up was pretty exhausting, because in case you don't know: Mexico City is located at 2,300m above sea level. Any physical activity here is noticeably more tiring than at sea level.
Direkt hinter dem Kathedralen-Vorplatz befindet sich ein Hügel mit einer kleinen Kirche, die man über einige Treppen erreichen kann. So konnte ich einen weiteren tollen Aussichtspunkt erklimmen und mir den heiligen Ort von oben ansehen. Der Aufstieg war übrigens ziemlich mühsam, denn falls ihr es nicht wisst: Mexico City liegt auf 2.300m Seehöhe. Jegliche körperliche Aktivität ist hier spürbar anstrengender als auf Meereshöhe.
After going back down the stairs, I wanted to walk along the busy pedestrian zone in front of the pilgrimage site, but noticed that many policemen with shields were meeting there, which seemed a bit suspicious to me. Security is still an issue in Mexico, and you should never forget that. Therefore I prefer to be a little overcautious rather than too careless. So I took a 20-minute Uber ride back to my cosy appartment, from which I will soon deliver the next travel report to you.
Zum Abschluss wollte ich noch die gut besuchte Fußgängerzone vor dem Pilgerort entlang spazieren, bemerkte aber, dass sich dort Polizisten mit Schildern versammelten, was mir doch etwas suspekt erschien. Sicherheit ist noch immer ein Thema in Mexiko, dies sollte man nie außer Acht lassen. Ich bin daher lieber etwas übervorsichtig, als zu unachtsam. Also ging es für mich über eine 20-minütige Uber-Fahrt wieder zurück in mein gemütliches Apartment, von dem ich euch bald den nächsten Reisebericht liefern werde.

The churches are all so different. From modern to ancient. Really interesting comparison between them.
That plaza is amazing! I love these plazas, whether in Europe or elsewhere. They create a real sense of community that I do not see often here in the US.
