Hey guys! In the last few posts I've already told you a lot about the sights of Mexico City. But what is actually going on at night in the Mexican capital? Coyoacan is probably the nightlife and entertainment district par excellence and the number one place to go if you want to get a first taste of Mexican cuisine. In today's post, I'll tell you how I experienced this lively district and which unusual culinary highlights I tried!
Hallo Leute! In den letzten Beiträgen habe ich euch schon viel über die Sehenswürdigkeiten von Mexico City erzählt. Doch was tut sich eigentlich abends und nachts so in der mexikanischen Hauptstadt? Coyoacan ist wohl das Ausgeh- und Vergnügungsviertel schlechthin und die Anlaufstelle Nummer eins, wenn man einen ersten Einblick in die mexikanische Küche gewinnen möchte. Wie ich dieses quirlige Viertel erlebte und welche ausgefallenen kulinarischen Highlights ich probiert habe, verrate ich euch im heutigen Beitrag!
Coyoacán is located in the south of CDMX and was an independent municipality until 1929, when it was virtually devoured by the unstoppable growth of the city and is now far from its borders. Among other things, Coyaocan is known for its many colourful house facades. In addition to several churches and monuments, the birthplace of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, which now houses a museum, can also be found here.
Coyoacán befindet sich im Süden von CDMX und war bis zum Jahr 1929 eine eigenständige Stadtgemeinde, die durch das unaufhaltsame Wachstum der Stadt quasi verschlungen wurde und sich heute weit von den Stadtgrenzen entfernt befindet. Bekannt ist Coyaocan unter anderem auch für die vielen bunten Hausfassaden. Neben einigen Kirchen und Denkmälern, findet man hier auch das Geburtshaus der mexikanischen Malerin Frida Kahlo, in dem sich heute ein Museum befindet.
But what makes Coyoacan stand out above all is its unique atmosphere, when the sun is slowly approaching the horizon and the district really comes to life. Almost every single door leads to a restaurant or bar, music pours in from everywhere, happy couples, groups of friends and families form a colourful crowd and you could probably taste different delicacies at hundreds of street stalls every night for months. There is also a bazaar and lots of street performers. Coyoacan is pure sensory overload! If you're looking for Mexican joy of life, you've come to the right place.
Was Coyoacan aber vor allem auszeichnet, ist seine einzigartige Atmosphäre, wenn sich die Sonne langsam dem Horizont neigt und das Viertel erst so richtig zum Leben erwacht. Fast jede einzelne Tür führt zu einem Restaurant oder einer Bar, von überall strömt Musik auf einen ein, vergnügte Paare, Gruppen von Freuden und Familien formen sich zu einer bunten Menschenmasse und an hunderten Straßenständen könnte man wohl monatelang jeden Abend andere Köstlichkeiten probieren. Es gibt auch einen Basar, sowie jede Menge Straßenkünstler. Coyoacan ist Reizüberflutung pur! Wer mexikanische Lebensfreude sucht, ist hier goldrichtig.
So which dishes did I try? Unfortunately, I didn't photograph everything and honestly can't remember all the names of all the dishes. Of course there were classics like tacos and quesadillas among them. But my highlights were a taco pizza, tamarind juice and various tamarind candies. If you want to try something that tastes sweet, sour, salty and spicy at the same time, you shouldn't miss the latter. But the most unusual thing I found was definitely tequila ice cream. Actually, I don't like tequila at all, but where else but in Mexico would I ever get this opportunity? It was disgusting, but I'm glad I tried it.
Welche Gerichte habe ich also probiert? Leider habe ich nicht alles fotografiert und kann mich ehrlich gesagt auch nicht die Namen aller Gerichte erinnern. Natürlich waren Klassiker wie Tacos und Quesadillas dabei. Meine Highlights waren aber eine Taco-Pizza, Tamarindensaft und verschiedene Tamarinden-Süßigkeiten. Wenn ihr etwas probieren wollt, das süß, sauer, salzig und scharf zugleich schmeckt, dann solltet ihr euch letztere nicht entgehen lassen. Am ausgefallensten fand ich aber eindeutig Tequila-Eis. Eigentlich mag ich Tequila überhaupt nicht, doch wo außer in Mexiko sollte ich sonst noch jemals diese Gelegenheit bekommen? Es war widerlich, aber ich bin froh, es probiert zu haben.
In the meantime, I have already been to Coyoacán several times and am already looking forward to the next visit. There is so much to discover here and I feel very comfortable in the lively atmosphere of the district, which, by the way, often reminds me of street food markets in Southeast Asia. Make sure you take at least one evening to visit Coyoacán if you spend a few days in Mexico City. You simply have to experience this district for yourself!
Mittlerweile war ich bereits mehrmals in Coyoacán und freue mich bereits auf den nächsten Besuch. Es gibt hier so unglaublich viel zu entdecken und ich fühle mich in der quirligen Atmosphäre des Viertels, das mich übrigens nicht selten an Street-Food-Märkte in Südostasien erinnert, sehr wohl. Nehmt euch unbedingt zumindest einen Abend Zeit für Coyoacán, wenn ihr mal ein paar Tage in Mexico City verbringt. Dieses Viertel muss man einfach selbst erlebt haben!
