Warm evening in Rummu Quarry, Estonia

in Pinmapple3 years ago (edited)

It's been years since I visited this place last time. It has changed quite a bit, it now costs 4€ to get a ticket inside for a day, it includes car parking.

It's a private property actually and it was not open for people years ago, but now it seems the owners have changed their minds and are actually investing and making a business out of it.

There's been some developments going on, like some small wake park thing, a cafe and a place where you can rent stuff for water activities like scuba diving, boats, canoe etc.

The hill is still there in about the same state, but trees and plants much taller now.

You can also swim here, the water looks clear and is pretty warm. It's been made a bit safer now to swim also.

What's the history behind this place?

Well here was a prison until 2012, when it was closed. During the Soviet times until 1990s the excavation was performed as hard labour by Murru and Rummu prisoners. They would excavate and process limestone from the then water-drained quarry. Since the quarry was closed and the water not pumped out anymore, the quarry lake started to grow.

It was pretty good climb to get to the top of that thing.

The view is still nice.

I wonder what it would be like to live near this place.

The first time visiting this place was still more exciting, since it was not that well know place years ago. It's become too popular now, and I like things more when they are still in the early days and raw chaos. But still an interesting place to look around and enjoy the summer.
