Hello there Hive Family,
While today we have measured yet another record in Sofia (the highest temperature ever measured on the 30th of December), the mountains were cold enough for driven snow. Not just that, the ski slopes were quite well moulded too.
This time, I was able to use not only my phone but a semi-professional camera so some of the photos will be touched by magic 😄
So this is how we started the journey. As you can see, the city of Bansko (which is right below the mountains) seems like it is in autumn season. Very warm and plesant. But up in the sky, the winter turbulence is real.
The initial plan was to reach Gotse Delchev Hut and from to take the Saddle Lift up to Bezbog Hut. Unfortunately, the wind was too strong and all lifts had to cease operation until further notice. That meant us having to climb an additional 2 hours right next to the ski slopes risking being hit by the incoming crowd. Thankfully, there weren´t too many people going down given the circumstances.
This is how it began. We were 5 people in total.
During our ascend, we had to take photos. The nature was marvelous.
Here we see enthusiastic people trying to summit the slope with their skis.
Looks easy right? Well not so much. And I will show you why.
Here is why. Constant whirlwinds were showering us the whole way.
Some photos look surreal. But really, the wind was blowing very strongly.
Here I was struggling to stand still during yet another storm.
But no worries! We were having the time of our lives.
We finally reached Bezbog Hut. From there we only had to climb Peak Bezbog in incredible weather.
Sure why not. It is not like the snow is too much.
But it was. And the collapsing into holes was very frequent during our ascend. We didn´t bother getting snowshoes which we regretted later. The terrain was actually a juniper forest which meant that the holes are everywhere and we will be losing a lot of energy and time overcoming the denivelation. Coupled with me eating beans and 2 sandwiches right before this, was a recipe for a disaster.
That was the peak to be conquered. But my stomach and blood were now too busy to digest the food so I was about to have a really hard ride upwards. My advice is: Never eat beans or sandwiches with jerky right before a summit. The food will drain all the energy and you will hardly walk let alone climb steep surfaces.
I wish I could take one of those Snow ATVs for a ride. That would be real fun.
Anyway, we started our journey to the top. We were walking over a frozen lake. Luckily, it was frozen hard and nobody fell into stone cold water.
Of course, the views were one of a kind.
The snow looked a bit like sand but yeah.. a bit colder.
The Juniper valley. No pathways could form because of the powerful whirlwinds.
My friend on the right, just chilling with both legs dipped under the snow.
The wind was so strong, all bushes were tilted to their maximum extent.
The clouds were forming and going in circles aroung the peak. There the vortex was the strongest.
Funny moment. I took a couple of selfies on the peak itself. If you take a closer look to both photos of the collage, you will see that on the second one, the hat of my friend is missing. He had a lot of luck because if the hat had flown down, we would have kissed it goodbye. The thing is that the wind was so brutal that his hat pegged the cross behind us. That happened in a matter of seconds.
An amazing trip with amazing friends. Thank you for all adventures 2020. I welcome 2021 and I believe that it will be even more amazing and full of breathtaking moments.
