About two weeks ago, in spite of those ungodly current Diesel prices, Caroline (@caro-art), Gizmo, and I got back on the road, this time to the South of France. We wanted to do a bit of spelunking and see 36,000-year-old, prehistoric cave paintings, and tour the magnificent canyons of the Ardèche, among other things.
As usual, there was a storm of impressions, and it's a ton of work to compile them into a (hopefully entertaining) video with some production value, and write up reasonably informative blog posts. Therefore, I have broken this up in two parts: today's post features the full 20-minute video, soup to nuts, but only the first part of the detailed photo story. The second part of the story I'll post just as soon as I can write it up. :-)
Vor etwa zwei Wochen machten Caroline (@caro-art), Gizmo und ich uns trotz der horrenden derzeitigen Dieselpreise wieder auf die Reise, diesmal nach Südfrankreich. Wir wollten ein bisschen Höhlenforschung betreiben und 36.000 Jahre alte, prähistorische Höhlenmalereien besichtigen, und unter anderem die fantastischen Schluchten der Ardèche besuchen.
Wie immer gab es eine Fülle von Eindrücken, und es ist ein Haufen Arbeit, diese in einem (hoffentlich unterhaltsamen) Video mit einem gewissen Produktionswert zu verarbeiten, und einigermaßen informative Blogbeiträge zu verfassen. Deshalb habe ich dieses Material in zwei Teile aufgeteilt: Der heutige Beitrag enthält das vollständige 20-minütige Video, aber nur den ersten Teil der detaillierten Fotogeschichte. Den zweiten Teil der Geschichte werde ich veröffentlichen, so schnell ich ihn fertig schreiben kann. :-)

Through the Auvergne and the Massif Central
We love taking short trips, and from Saarbruecken in Germany where we live, it's about 750km (470 miles, 7½ hours) straight down the excellent French toll highway system to the Ardèche, going via Nancy, Dijon, Lyon to the nougat city of Montélimar - each of which would be worth a visit in their own right.
This time, however, after Lyon, we kept a little more west to leisurely take in the beautiful landscape of the Auvergne and the mountains of the Massif Central. The area is quiet, it's beautiful, and it's perfectly suitable for wild camping.

Wir lieben Kurzreisen, und von Saarbrücken, wo wir leben, sind es etwa 750 km (7½ Stunden) über das ausgezeichnete französische Mautautobahnsystem in die Ardèche, über Nancy, Dijon, Lyon bis zur Nougatstadt Montélimar - die alle für sich genommen einen Besuch wert wären.
Diesmal jedoch sind wir hinter Lyon etwas weiter westlich gefahren, um die herrliche Landschaft der Auvergne und die Berge des Zentralmassivs auch noch mitzunehmen. Die Gegend ist ruhig, wunderschön und eignet sich hervorragend zum Wildcampen.
Speaking of camping, Gizmo, our 6-month-old Maltese puppy, has taken to traveling with the camper like a champ and has made the vehicle his own. I think this little dog is enjoying himself more than we do!

Even the Mightiest River Starts as a Tiny Runlet
A few weeks ago, we had visited the Loire, one of France's great rivers. Perhaps you watched the video and remember this shot of the Loire near the town of Sully:

The main reason for our westerly detour on this trip was another: in the Massiv Central, on the Mont Gerbier de Jonc near the village of Saint-Eulalie is the place where the mighty Loire first sees the light of day. There are actually three official sources of the Loire in close proximity to each other, and we visited two of them. Let me explain:
Der Hauptgrund für unseren Abstecher nach Westen auf dieser Fahrt war ein anderer: Im Zentralmassiv, am Mont Gerbier de Jonc in der Nähe des Dorfes Saint-Eulalie, ist der Ort, an dem die mächtige Loire das Licht der Welt erblickt. Eigentlich gibt es drei offizielle Quellen der Loire in unmittelbarer Nähe zueinander, und wir haben zwei davon besucht. Lass' mich das erklären:
The first source is the "source authentique." It's basically a tiny pond in the ground with a fancy monument sponsored by a French automobile club in 1938, but no noticable runoff to anywhere. So to me, that doesn't count and we skipped it. A river has to run, those are the rules...
As we gleaned from this signpost by the wayside, the water from the "source authentique" appears to be traveling (underground!) to the nearby "source géographique." So let's take a closer look at that!
Die erste Quelle ist die "source authentique". Dabei handelt es sich im Grunde um einen winzigen Teich mit einem schicken Denkmal, das 1938 von einem französischen Automobilclub gesponsert wurde, aber ohne nennenswerten Abfluss nach irgendwo. Für mich zählt diese Quelle also nicht und wir haben sie übersprungen. Ein Fluss muss fließen, so sind halt die Regeln...
Wie wir diesem Schild am Wegesrand entnommen haben, scheint das Wasser von der "source authentique" (unterirdisch!) zur nahe gelegenen "source géographique" zu fließen. Schauen wir uns das also mal genauer an!

Following this gutter, we find an old cowshed with a rusty metal sign that proudly proclaims to house the geographic source of the mighty Loire! Curiouser and curiouser...
Dieser Rinne folgend, finden wir einen alten Kuhstall mit einem rostigen Metallschild, das stolz verkündet, die geografische Quelle der mächtigen Loire zu beherbergen! Na, das ist ja ulkig...
And then we finally get to the bottom of this enigma: the source of the Loire emanates right here, from the mountainside on which the cowshed is built. Sensibly, the farmer captured it and used it to water his cows!
Und dann stoßen wir auf des Rätsels Lösung: Die Quelle der Loire kommt genau hier aus dem Berghang, auf dem der Kuhstall steht, und wurde vom Bauern sinnigerweise eingefasst und zur Tränke seiner Kühe verwendet!
Apparently, the French didn't think an abreuvoir a glamorous enough starting point for one of their most fabled rivers, so the official maps of the French state show another source as the true source ("véritable source") of the Loire. As luck would have it, that one is just one klick down the road:
Offenbar war den Franzosen eine Viehtränke als Ausgangspunkt eines ihrer berühmtesten Flüsse nicht glamourös genug, so dass die offiziellen Karten des französischen Staates eine andere Quelle als die wahre Quelle ("véritable source") der Loire ausweisen. Wie es der Zufall will, liegt diese Quelle nur einen Katzensprung entfernt:
This source is more like a river is supposed to start out: a tiny stream issues from a hole in the ground and continues down a small ditch, and is captured in a fish pond on the neighbouring property, from where it flows on and on...
Coincidently, somebody carved a simple wooden sign and placed it on the source. It reads "From here starts my run for the ocean." The Loire will meet the Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Nazaire, over a thousand kilometers of land and legends from here. We'll be sure to let you know when we get around to visit there!
Diese Quelle ist eher so, wie man sich das vorstellt: Ein winziges Rinnsal entspringt aus einem Loch im Boden, fließt einen kleinen Graben hinunter und wird in einem Fischteich auf dem Nachbargrundstück aufgefangen, von wo aus das Wasser immer weiter fließt...
Passenderweise hat jemand ein einfaches Holzschild geschnitzt und an der Quelle angebracht. Darauf steht: "Von hier aus beginnt mein Lauf zum Ozean". Die Loire wird in der Nähe von Saint-Nazaire in den Atlantik münden, über tausend Kilometer aus Land und Legenden von hier. Wir werden dich auf jeden Fall informieren, wenn wir die Gelegenheit haben, dort mal vorbeizuschauen!
The "véritable" source of the Loire is the one that's furthest from the Atlantic ocean, so I choose to think of this source as the true source of the river myself. But the fact of the matter is, no large river in the world ever has one single source; they're all made up of the sum of their tributaries. Still, it's a nice thought to have visited "the source."
Die "véritable" Quelle der Loire ist diejenige, die am weitesten vom Atlantik entfernt ist, daher betrachte auch ich diese Quelle als die wahre Quelle des Flusses. Aber Tatsache ist, dass kein großer Fluss auf der Welt nur eine einzige Quelle hat; sie setzen sich alle aus der Summe ihrer Nebenflüsse zusammen. Col du Pranlet: A Camp Spot with a View
As I mentioned before, the Massif Central is a great place for camping. For the night we found this great spot by the side of the road right on the very top of a mountain, providing us with a great view for the evening and the following morning. Here are the coords, if you're interested: 44°48'56.8"N, 4°15'54.7"E.
Mind you, wild camping is prohibited in France. However, I built my camper purposely for stealth, with no windows, to retain the look of the delivery van it started out as. It's just another one of tens of thousands of ubiquitous white Renault Trafics on the streets of Europe, not worth a second look by anybody. So we get away with wild camping most anywhere; your mileage may vary!

Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, ist das Zentralmassiv ein großartiges Gebiet fürs Camping. Für die Nacht haben wir diesen schönen Platz am Straßenrand direkt auf dem Gipfel eines Berges gefunden, von dem aus wir am Abend und am nächsten Morgen eine tolle Aussicht hatten. Allerdings ist das wilde Campen in Frankreich verboten. Ich habe meinen Camper jedoch absichtlich unauffällig gestaltet, ohne Fenster, um das Aussehen des Lieferwagens zu bewahren, als der er ursprünglich gebaut wurde. Er ist nur einer von zehntausenden weißen Renault Trafics, die auf den Straßen Europas allgegenwärtig sind und von niemandem beachtet werden. Wir kommen also mit dem Freistehen fast überall durch; deine eigenen Erfahrungen können da ganz anders sein!

Grotte Chauvet 2: Stunning Prehistoric Cave Paintings
The Chauvet Cave, in French "Grotte Chauvet" - named after its discoverer Jean-Marie Chauvet - is located near the small town of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in the Ardèche river valley in the south of France. The Chauvet Cave was discovered only in 1994 and is one of the world's most important archaeological sites with cave paintings and carvings. So far, more than 400 murals with about 1,000 painted and engraved representations of animals and symbols have been recorded. In June 2014, the Chauvet Cave was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Grotte Chauvet 2: Erstaunliche prähistorische Höhlenmalereien
Die Chauvet-Höhle, auf Französisch "Grotte Chauvet" - benannt nach ihrem Entdecker Jean-Marie Chauvet - befindet sich in der Nähe der kleinen Stadt Vallon-Pont-d'Arc im Tal des Flusses Ardèche in Südfrankreich. Die Chauvet-Höhle wurde erst 1994 entdeckt und ist eine der wichtigsten archäologischen Stätten der Welt mit Höhlenmalereien und geritzten Reliefs. Bisher wurden mehr als 400 Wandmalereien mit rund 1.000 gemalten und eingeritzten Tier- und Symboldarstellungen erfasst. Im Juni 2014 wurde die Chauvet-Höhle in die Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes aufgenommen.
Time to fess up: The original Chauvet Cave is closed to the public! Even a small change in humidity from the sweat of masses of visitors could lead to fungal attack and thus endanger the priceles, over 30,000 year-old paintings in the cave. In order to show the cave paintings to a wide public in as authentic an environment as possible without endangering the originals, the French built the largest cave replica in the world, to the tune of 55 million Euros! That's what Caroline and I visited.
The pictures below show the visitor center of the Grotte Chauvet 2 complex and, from another perspective, the giant building with the cave replica. Unfortunately, drone flying wasn't permitted in the area, so I can't show the enormous dimensions of the park housing the installation. There is actually half a kilometer to walk between the visitor center and the replica building. For these photos, I lifted the drone to a height of only 10 meters above ground, which by all standards is considered playing, not flying. Better than nothing.
Zeit für ein Geständnis: Die echte Chauvet-Höhle ist für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich! Schon eine geringe Veränderung der Luftfeuchtigkeit durch den Schweiß der Besuchermassen könnte zu Pilzbefall führen und damit die kostbaren, über 30.000 Jahre alten Malereien in der Höhle gefährden. Um die Höhlenmalereien einem breiten Publikum in einer möglichst authentischen Umgebung zu zeigen, ohne die Originale zu gefährden, bauten die Franzosen für 55 Millionen Euro die größte Höhlennachbildung der Welt! Die haben Caroline und ich besucht.
Die Bilder hier zeigen das Besucherzentrum des Grotte-Chauvet-2-Komplexes und, aus einer anderen Perspektive, das riesige Gebäude mit der Höhlennachbildung. Leider waren Drohnenflüge in dem Gebiet nicht erlaubt, so dass ich die enormen Ausmaße des Parks, in dem sich die Anlage befindet, nicht zeigen kann. Zwischen dem Besucherzentrum und der Höhlennachbildung liegt tatsächlich ein halber Kilometer Fußweg. Für diese Fotos habe ich die Drohne auf eine Höhe von nur 10 Metern über dem Boden angehoben, was nach allen üblichen Maßstäben als "gespielt" und nicht "geflogen" gilt. Besser als nichts.
Speaking of restrictions: animals are not allowed in the complex, with the exception of medical assistance dogs. Because of Gizmo, Caroline and I had to take turns. If you're traveling with a pooch, plan for the extra time. Don't be an asshole: DO NOT leave your dog alone in the hot car!
Neither photography nor video are allowed inside the cave replica, and telephones have to be turned off! They tell you to download photos from their official website (too few, crappy resolution), but the French Wikipedia has a good selection of freely usable pictures (good resolution, usable with attribution).

Apropos Einschränkungen: Tiere sind in der Anlage nicht erlaubt, mit Ausnahme von medizinischen Assistenzhunden. Wegen Gizmo mussten Caroline und ich uns abwechseln. Wenn Du mit Hund reist, plane extra Zeit ein. Sei kein Arschloch: Lasse deinen Hund NICHT allein im heißen Auto!
Fotografieren und Video sind im Inneren der Höhlennachbildung verboten und Telefone müssen ausgeschaltet werden! Es heißt, man solle sich Fotos von der offiziellen Website herunterladen (zu wenige, in beschissener Auflösung), aber die französische Wikipedia hat eine gute Auswahl an frei verwendbaren Bildern (gute Auflösung, mit Quellenangabe).

Lastly, visitors to the cave replica are assigned a fixed time and a group, and you can't break from the group unless in an emergency. Contrary to the claims on their website, there are no self-guided tours! Inside the replica, there are no seats, and you will be walking or standing the whole time, roundabout 45 minutes.
Schlussendlich, Besuchern der Höhlennachbildung wird eine feste Zeit und eine Gruppe zugewiesen, und man kann sich nur in Notfällen von der Gruppe trennen. Entgegen den Behauptungen auf der Website gibt es keine selbstgeführten Touren! Im Inneren der Höhlennachbildung gibt es keine Sitzplätze, und Du wirst die ganze Zeit, also etwa 45 Minuten, gehen oder stehen müssen.
Although the place is fully handicap-accessible, this poses a problem for people like me. I have a walking impediment, but I'm not wheelchair bound just yet. I made the 500 meters walk to the replica with the help of my cane, but the ambling along for 45 minutes without a sitdown just about killed me! For the way back to the car, I flagged down a groundskeeper with a golf cart. Good thing the woman took pity on me.
Obwohl die Anlage vollständig behindertengerecht ist, stellt dies für Menschen wie mich ein Problem dar. Ich bin zwar gehbehindert, aber noch nicht an den Rollstuhl gebunden. Die 500 Meter bis zur Nachbildung habe ich mit Hilfe meines Stocks zurückgelegt, aber das 45-minütige Rumschlendern ohne Sitzgelegenheit hat mich ganz schön fertiggemacht! Für den Rückweg zum Auto habe ich dann eine Gärtnerin mit einem Golfwagen angehalten. Zum Glück hatte die Frau Erbarmen mit mir.
Think of Grotte Chauvet 2 as "Disneyland with hostage taking." "Disneyland", because it's a clever replica with special effects, and "hostage taking" because you can't get out of the mess once you're in. They're not telling you any of this, so I do. If you have any walking impediment, borrow a wheelchair! Other than that, our visit at Grotte Chauvet 2 was really interesting and well worth the 17.00 EUR admission (per person). That out of the way, let's look at the cave and the art:
Betrachte Grotte Chauvet 2 als "Disneyland mit Geiselnahme". "Disneyland", weil es eine geschickte Nachbildung mit Spezialeffekten ist, und "Geiselnahme", weil man aus dem Schlamassel nicht mehr rauskommt, wenn man einmal drin ist. Das alles erzählen sie einem nicht, also mach' ich das. Wenn Du irgendeine Gehbehinderung hast, leih' dir einen Rollstuhl! Abgesehen davon war unser Besuch in der Grotte Chauvet 2 wirklich interessant und die 17,00 EUR Eintritt (pro Person) wert. Schauen wir uns nun also die Höhle und die Kunstwerke an:
Upon entering the replica building, one forgets within seconds that this is not a real cave but an artificially created cave environment. Have a look at this older post of mine, and compare the photos here with a real cave in France.
This replica forms a giant cave room of 3,500 m² (38,000 sqf) with 8,200 m² (88,000 sqf) of walls and vaults on a 1:1 scale. The "rock" surfaces made from faithfully colored and painted synthetic resin are mounted on a steel mesh of 150 km (93 miles) of steel wire, which exactly reproduces the surface shapes of the cave. The artificial cave room contains replicas of the main paintings from the original cave, with the shape and surface texture of the paintings' substrate matching that of the original cave walls.
A scientific committee of 15 scientists ensured the stunning quality of the replica in every aspect. Three of those scientists - a geomorphologist, a paleontologist, and a archaeozoologist - had already studied the original cave since 1998, and it was their responsibility to guide the replica's production process.
Wenn man das Replika-Gebäude betritt, vergisst man innerhalb von Sekunden, dass es sich nicht um eine echte Höhle, sondern um eine künstlich geschaffene Höhlenumgebung handelt. Schau dir diesen älteren Post von mir an und vergleiche die Fotos hier mit einer echten Höhle in Frankreich.
Diese Nachbildung bildet einen riesigen Höhlenraum von 3.500 m² mit 8.200 m² Wänden und Gewölben im Maßstab 1:1. Die "Fels"-Oberflächen aus originalgetreu gefärbtem und bemaltem Kunstharz sind auf einem Stahlnetz aus 150 km Stahldraht montiert, das die Oberflächenformen der Höhle exakt wiedergibt. Der künstliche Höhlensaal enthält Nachbildungen der wichtigsten Malereien aus der Originalhöhle, wobei die Form und die Oberflächenbeschaffenheit des Trägermaterials der Malereien denen der Originalhöhlenwände entsprechen.
Ein wissenschaftliches Komitee aus 15 Wissenschaftlern sorgte dafür, dass die Nachbildung in jeder Hinsicht von beeindruckender Qualität ist. Drei dieser Wissenschaftler - ein Geomorphologe, ein Paläontologe und ein Archäozoologe - hatten die Originalhöhle bereits seit 1998 erforscht, und es war ihre Aufgabe, den Herstellungsprozess der Nachbildung zu leiten.
Bone fragments of all sorts and shapes can be seen scattered on the floor, or purposely arranged by prehistoric people throughout the cave, especially bones of bears. For the longest time, bears were indigenous to the Ardèche region, and quite a few bear skulls and paw prints catch the viewer's eye over and over.
Large bones have been rammed vertically into the ground. Boulders were assembled to form a cairn. A bear skull has been carefully placed on a large, flat block, which is all the more remarkable because there are a number bear bones strewn around the block. Without further excavation, it is impossible to determine, whether the animals died there of natural causes or whether the bones were placed there by humans.
Knochenreste aller Art sind in der gesamten Höhle auf dem Boden verstreut oder von prähistorischen Menschen arrangiert zu sehen, vor allem Knochen von Bären. Bären waren lange Zeit in der Ardèche-Region heimisch, und dem Betrachter fallen immer wieder etliche Bärenschädel und Tatzenabdrücke auf.
Große Knochen wurden senkrecht in den Boden gerammt. Felsblöcke wurden zu einem Steinhaufen zusammengelegt. Ein Bärenschädel wurde behutsam auf einem großen, flachen Block abgelegt, was umso bemerkenswerter ist, als um den Block herum etliche Bärengebeine liegen, von denen man ohne weitere Ausgrabung nicht sagen kann, ob die Tiere dort auf natürliche Weise verendet sind, oder ob die Knochen von Menschen dort abgelegt wurden.
The front part of the cave contains mysterious red dot designs and drawings made with hematite pigment. A fine red hand, the hand of a petite woman, is depicted as a stenciled negative, achieved by blowing pigment dust over her hand. In other drawings, the use of an estompe (stump) as a drawing implement can be surmised.
Der vordere Teil der Höhle enthält geheimnisvolle rote Punkte und Zeichnungen, die mit Hämatit-Pigment hergestellt wurden. Eine feine rote Hand, die Hand einer zierlichen Frau, ist als schabloniertes Negativ dargestellt, das durch das Aufblasen von Pigmentstaub auf ihre Hand entstanden ist. In anderen Zeichnungen lässt sich die Verwendung einer Estompe (Stumpen) als Zeichengerät vermuten.
Over and over we notice the presence of cave bears, not just their bones, but also in the art (photo below). The smaller animal in this photo, however, is thought to be a panther. Surprising is the multitude of rhinoceros depicted in the cave. After all, we're in France, not in Africa. A clear reminder, that constant change (e.g. climate change) is much older than mankind, and nothing one needs to get one's panties in a bunch over.
Immer wieder fällt die Anwesenheit von Höhlenbären auf, nicht nur bei den Knochen, sondern auch in der Kunst (oben). Bei dem kleineren Tier auf diesem Foto handelt es sich jedoch vermutlich um einen Panther. Überraschend ist die Vielzahl von Nashorn-Darstellungen in der Höhle. Schließlich sind wir hier in Frankreich und nicht in Afrika. Ein deutlicher Hinweis, das ständiger Wandel (z.B. Klimawandel) viel älter als die Menschheit ist, und nichts, weshalb man sich ins Höschen machen müsste.
The animal paintings in different caves can give us accurate information about the morphology of the Aurignacian species (cave lion, cave bear, woolly rhinoceros, mammoth, reindeer, deer, and the wild horse of the time). For example, one learns that in the case of the cave lion, the male did not wear a mane. The works show a very accurate observation of fearsome animals, which were certainly observed at close range and whose behavior is thus revealed.
Die Tiermalereien in diversen Höhlen können uns genaue Informationen über die Morphologie der aurignacischen Tierarten (Höhlenlöwe, Höhlenbär, Wollnashorn, Mammut, Rentier, Hirsch und das damalige Wildpferd) geben. So erfährt man zum Beispiel, dass beim Höhlenlöwen das Männchen keine Mähne trug. As we proceed to the middle part of the cave the drawings turn from red hematite to black charcoal. However, there is also an area with an especially soft rock face, which our prehistoric ancestors recognized and used for their art: a number of engravings have been created with no tool other than the artists' fingers. Once again, the subjects are animals: a horse, mammoths, an eagle owl.

Es gibt jedoch auch einen Bereich mit besonders weichem Fels, was unsere prähistorischen Vorfahren erkannten und für ihre Kunst nutzten: eine Reihe von Gravuren wurden ohne zusätzliches Werkzeug nur mit den Fingern der Künstler geschaffen. Auch hier geht es wieder um Tiere: ein Pferd, Mammuts, einen Uhu.
Also located in the middle part of the cave is a stunning panel of horse drawings. Or rather, horse paintings, since the artists had a good command of quite a number of rather sophisticated techniques, such as shading and blurring in black and white, and precise outlining with flint. (Flint tools have been found in the original Chauvet cave.)

Oder besser gesagt, Pferdemalereien, denn die Künstler beherrschten eine ganze Reihe recht ausgefeilter Techniken wie Schattierungen und Unschärfen in Schwarz und Weiß sowie präzise Umrisslinien mit Feuerstein. (Feuersteinwerkzeuge sind in der ursprünglichen Chauvet-Höhle gefunden worden.)
It is remarkable, how the artist embued each of the four horses with a distinctly different temperament, as indicated by the eyes and mouths. The viewer's eye is lead to the fourth horse, which is the focus of the painting. This horse was also painted last, which proves, that the artist had a keen understanding of composition, and planned out the painting beforehand!
Es ist bemerkenswert, wie der Künstler jedem der vier Pferde ein deutlich unterschiedliches Temperament verliehen hat, was durch Augen und Mäuler angedeutet wird. Der Blick des Betrachters wird auf das vierte Pferd gelenkt, das im Mittelpunkt des Gemäldes steht. Dieses Pferd wurde auch als letztes gemalt, was beweist, dass der Künstler ein feines Gespür für Komposition hatte und das Gemälde im Voraus durchplante!
And once again rhinos, facing off in a strikingly violent depiction; and a pair of lions:

To me the artistic highlight of our visit is found at the far end of the cave. Just like in the real Chauvet cave, there is the large panel of a pride of lions in pursuit of rhinoceros and bison. The composition is cleverly painted around a niche in the rock, which contains the painting of a horse. The entire arrangement has a dynamic and downright modern feel to it.
Für mich ist der künstlerische Höhepunkt unseres Besuchs ganz am Ende der Höhle zu finden. Wie in der echten Chauvet-Höhle befindet sich dort ein großes Gemälde eines Löwenrudels auf der Jagd nach Nashörnern und Bisons. Die Komposition ist geschickt um eine Felsnische herum gemalt, in der sich das Bild eines Pferdes befindet. Das gesamte Arrangement wirkt dynamisch und geradezu modern.
The Wild Hunt is led by four majestic lions on the very left, with a stag thrown in for reasons only the artist would know. Following the leading lions are fleeing rhinos. In a modern, almost cartoon-like way, the rhino horns and shapes are painted in repetition, in an attempt by the artist to depict speed and haste:

What is so special about the white horse in the niche? Why is it given this obviously special location in the first place? And why are all the animals around the niche not facing in the direction of the general stampede, but seem to be looking at the white horse instead? If the prehistoric artist wanted us to contemplate his work, he most certainly managed to achieve this beautifully! I'm still guessing...
Was ist so besonders an dem weißen Pferd in der Nische? Warum wird ihm überhaupt dieser offensichtlich besondere Platz zugewiesen? Und warum schauen alle Tiere um die Nische herum nicht in Richtung der allgemeinen Stampede, sondern scheinen stattdessen auf das weiße Pferd zu blicken? Wenn der prähistorische Künstler wollte, dass wir sein Werk nachdenklich betrachten, dann ist ihm das ganz sicher wunderbar gelungen! Ich bin immer noch am Rätseln...
On the far right of the ensemble, male and female lions have their gazes firmly fixed on the fleeing buffalo, in sheer determination. The buffalo herd is in panic and disarray, and some of the buffalo seem to be looking directly at the viewer, almost in desperation. The entire painting has something cinematic about it. It's easy to imagine a wild sense of motion introduced by the flickering of torches which were once the only means of illuminating the cave.
Ganz rechts in diesem Ensemble haben männliche und weibliche Löwen ihre Blicke fest auf die fliehenden Büffel gerichtet, in schierer Entschlossenheit. Die Büffelherde ist in Panik und Verwirrung, und einige der Büffel scheinen den Betrachter direkt anzuschauen, fast verzweifelt. Das gesamte Gemälde hat etwas Filmisches an sich. Man kann sich leicht vorstellen, wie das Flackern der Fackeln, die einst die einzige Möglichkeit waren, die Höhle zu beleuchten, ein Gefühl wilder Bewegung hervorruft.
The same sophisticated techniques of the horse painting are used here as well: line blurring; charcoal fading and fading to white; scraping, engraving, and erasing with flint. Hard to believe, that these paintings, or rather, their originals, are over 30,000 years old...
Die gleichen ausgefeilten Techniken wie bei dem Gemälde mit den Pferden kommen auch hier zum Einsatz: Verwischung von Linien; Ausbleichen von Holzkohle und Überblenden zu Weiß; Schaben, Gravieren und Radieren mit Feuerstein. Kaum zu glauben, dass diese Gemälde, bzw. ihre Originale, über 30.000 Jahre alt sind...

Those formations and shapes left on the walls are pure history! I remember seeing something similar along my journeys a while ago but nothing can be compared with these moments when you are so close to a real treasure!
I know what you mean. Unfortunately, that feeling doesn't materialize, when one knows it's a copy one is looking at. But it still gives rise to contemplation.

Thanks. Yes, it's a pretty decent substitute for the real thing they don't allow us to see. And, truth be known, it's a technological and artistic marvel in its own right. :-)
Amazing pictures and story. I didn't know what you mentioned about the sources plural thus ;) ) of the Loire. This was interesting (and cool) to read!
As a side note, I had a family trip to Auvergne planned a couple of years ago, but the pandemic made us cancel it all. This reminds me that we should reconsider that trip, one day ;)

Wow the cave is awsome, this is kind of the first house of human, The paintings in the cave look simple but valuable. I also love the way there, the landscape on both side of the road is stunning. It must be great to drive on that road, I guess. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. Those paintings are actually not that simplistic, and some of them show a keen eye and dedication by the artists. Consider the tools they had, and what had yet to be invented in tools and concepts. People are just amazing.
The landscape around the cave I'll cover in Part 2 (or watch the video). The canyons of the Ardèche are spectacular. There are also a few real caves one can visit. I didn't; too many stairs for me anymore :-( but I did in earlier years, and they're fun and easy to explore.

:-) Ich hätte lieber nur einen einzigen Post gemacht, aber Du hast Recht, das Material reicht für fünf. In dem Video alleine stecken 40 oder 50 Stunden; das glaubt hier keiner, das guckt kaum einer, und das honoriert auch keiner. Ich hätte die Gechichte lieber mit Voiceover im Video erzählt. Aber auf Hive gilt, nur wer schreibt, der bleibt... Ich mach den ganzen Kram ja für mich. Im kalten Winter ziehe ich mich daran hoch, und wenn ich dermaleinst überhaupt nicht mehr krabbeln kann, kann ich wenigstens die Wiederholungen im Fernsehen anglotzen.
„Dermaleinst" - unbestritten zieren sich oft Worte und laufen einem recht selten über den Weg. Doch mit diesem Schmuckstück hast du mir ein Exemplar geliefert, welches nie zuvor sich an meinem sprachlichen Horizont blicken ließ. Danke!
Gleichwohl muss ich mich direkt im Anschluss kundig machen.
Die Probleme mit dem Bewegungsapparat hattest du ja bereits im Verlauf eurer Süditalien-Tour angemerkt. Nun stimmst du mich nachdenklich, da dermaleinst in Verbindung mit einer Verschlechterung zu bringen sein könnte. Hoffentlich liege ich komplett falsch?
Besser wird's nicht und irgendwann kommt er, der AOK-Chopper. Es iss wie's iss. Hier sind noch ein paar Worte für dich:

Oh wow that is quite the trip. The route you took was smart. After Lyon you can really get into some serious traffic - major stop and go for long distances. Those caves are so cool. We never went to any with paintings but I would love to see them.
The whole part about the river begining was really fascinating. I didn't realize any of that and what you said about the tributaries made a lot of sense.

Thanks. I would prefer to travel only byways, but that takes too long. We can't leave my old mom alone in the house for more than a few days anymore, so I have to pack as much as possible in those trips. Anything longer, and her care costs more than a year's worth of trips. So I compromise: some hustling on the express roads, and then off close to the destination. It helps to select areas, where there is stuff to see in close proximity, and enjoy the view from the car inbetween.
In the Ardèche area there is a bunch of real caves along the Route des Gorges de l'Ardèche (D290 from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to Pont-Saint-Esprit) which are interesting; it's just too many stairs for me anymore. The fake one was another compromise, and even that turned out to be difficult. But worth seeing, for sure. You forget that the paintings are copies real quick, and it's the only way for us common folk to experience anything close to that kind of spelunking.
I know exactly what you mean. We travel in the exact same way - see as much as possible in a short time...etc
Yeah the fact that the cave paintings are replicas is interesting. I read that about the famous ones in the Dordogne region. The real paintings were getting damaged and deteriorating because of all the people visiting them. I think it's good that they took measures to preserve them.

Thank you so much. :-) I get angry when I see people leave dogs (and babies!!!) in hot cars, and I have smashed quite a few windows to get them out. Stupid people don't understand, that a car in the sun gets so hot, that heatstroke occurs within 5 minutes. Hence the strong language.
Don't worry, you're young and you will make the trip one day. If not, there is an awful lot of gorgeous planet to explore so you will get your fill as life goes on. The important thing is, collect "experiences" and not "things". I wish somebody had told me that 50 years ago. :-)
