I took my username from a chess player I met long ago while playing online games. At the time of opening my account in Hive, I tried several names that had already been used, until I decided to put that name that I have not heard or seen anywhere else, only in my chess tournaments.
Today I took on the task of researching what it means, because I didn't know it. It took me a while to find out. I had to consider the fact that in those days I was a member of a Hungarian chess server, so I tried to Google translate it from the Hungarian language, and I got the certainty of its meaning.
My username, @toronyor, which spelled correctly in Hungarian would be toronyőr, means "watchman", the guard who watches from the tower.
I played many games on that Hungarian server. I have some anecdotes from that site and from that time. I was the only Venezuelan there, they gave me special treatment. An adaptation was made to the system so that I could play from my cell phone, which was a simple text cell phone with no graphic capabilities. The phone company here in Venezuela allowed me to interact with my email using text messages. So I was able to play from my cell phone about two hundred games by email.
An anecdote I can tell of those times is that once a tournament was organized against players from another server. With the data of each player, games were organized with players who had the same ELO (chess strength). It seems that the ELO calculation system was different on that server with the result that all our players always had to play against a much stronger opponent. It was a pity for our server, we only got defeats. The reason was found out later, there was no possibility to complain anymore.
The owner of the server told me that he didn't understand why here in Venezuela we worked so many hours. Curious opinion that has made me think, ever since, that work and effort should pay off and, over the years, should provide social security to the individual. I think it is a good aspiration that I developed while sharing with the Hungarians players, a good thing I received from toronyőr, the guard of the tower.

Mi nombre de usuario lo tomé de un jugador de ajedrez con quien jugué muchas partidas online. Al momento de abrir mi cuenta en Hive, intenté con varios nombres que ya habían sido usados, hasta que decidí colocar ese nombre el cual no he escuchado o visto en ningún otro lado, sólo en mis torneos de ajedrez.
Hoy me di a la tarea de investigar lo que significa, pues no lo sabía. Me costó un poco averiguarlo. Tuve que considerar que en ese tiempo yo era miembro de un servidor de ajedrez húngaro, así que probé con el traductor de Google desde el idioma húngaro, y obtuve la certeza de su significado.
Mi nombre de usuario, @toronyor, que correctamente escrito en húngaro sería toronyőr, significa "atalaya", el guardia que vigila en la torre.
Jugué muchas partidas en ese servidor húngaro. Tengo algunas historias de ese sitio y ese tiempo. Yo era el único venezolano allí, me dieron un tratamiento especial. Se hizo una adaptación al sistema para que yo pudiera jugar desde mi celular que era un simple celular de texto sin ninguna capacidad gráfica. La compañía de teléfonos de aquí de Venezuela permitía interactuar con mi correo usando mensajes de texto. Así pude jugar desde el celular unas doscientas partidas por correo electrónico.
Una anécdota que puedo contar de esos tiempos es que una vez se organizó un torneo contra jugadores de otro servidor. Con los datos de cada jugador se organizaron partidas con jugadores que tuvieran el mismo ELO (fuerza en ajedrez). Parece que el sistema de cálculo del ELO era distinto en aquel servidor con lo cual resultó que todos nuestros jugadores tuvieron que jugar siempre con un oponente mucho más fuerte. Fue una vergüenza para nuestro servidor, sólo obtuvimos derrotas. La razón se descubrió después, ya no había oportunidad de reclamar.
El dueño del servidor me llegó a decir que él no entendía por qué aquí en Venezuela trabajabamos tantas horas. Curiosa opinión que me ha tenido pensando, desde ese tiempo, que el trabajo y el esfuerzo deberían rendir su fruto y, con los años, deberían proveeer seguridad social al individuo. Creo que es una buena aspiración que me nació compartiendo con los húngaros, algo bueno me quedó de toronyőr, el guardia de la torre.
