Fish Aquarium update and plant question

in Fish Keepers3 years ago

Hello all, here is an update on our aquarium and a question. What types of plants are recommended for freshwater aquarium and why? I know in general that they help filter the nitrogen and other things in the water, but are there specific ones that are better than others? I had just a few plants from the local pet store initially, and need to replace a couple that didn't do so well over time. @sandymeyer I know you just put a bunch of plants into a new aquarium. Do you or others have recommendations, or just pick at random?

Here's the general view, as you can see, only a couple small plants left.
We have 6 large goldfish, 2 Plecos (which are getting big!) and 3 little glowfish, I don't know their real name.

Here are the two Plecos, these must be 10 inches long now.

They can say that you voted very correctly, lol))
Let's start with your aquatic organisms, namely the fish.
I see shubunken, veil-tails, tetra and pterygoplicht, I write from memory, I may be a little mistaken in Latin.
Shubunken and veil-tails are from the order of carp fish and they like water with increased hardness and lower temperatures, there is more dissolved oxygen in cool water, and carp fish often suffer from a lack of oxygen.
Tetra and pterygoplicht, love soft water with high acidity, like in the Amazon, and the rivers of its basin, and rivers that flow through the territory of Colombia and Peru.
Part of the diet of carp fish is plant food, which means that any living plants that you plant will be eaten.
You have a wonderful aquarium and it can be done in the Amano style, but you have to sacrifice something.
I had a chain of pet shops and specialized in aquarium hobby, more than 130 species of fish and over 100 species of living plants were in my aquariums. It was ten years ago, but, something, I still remember) In this aquarium, you can only put plastic plants.
Also, live plants need a neutral soil that will not increase the hardness of the water. Your tank has a high wall and little light. Looking for metal halide lamps. For this length, about 5-6 150 W luminaires, should be sufficient. For living plants, a carbon dioxide supply unit with a bubble counter and, preferably, a flow, constant supply and drainage of water is needed. But, sometimes, it turns out to do without all this)

Alternatively, you can use the Anubias varieties that I see in your tank. It has tough leaves, and the crucians will not eat it, but if they try to do it, they will dig it out, you can tie Anubias to a stone. On the leaves of Anubias, I see a bloom of algae, this indicates a strong horizontal flow of water and a small amount of light.
For living plants, strong currents should be avoided. Everything needs a balance: light, carbon dioxide content, temperature, water hardness.
