Pleco what?

in Fish Keepers3 years ago

Plecostamus - often just called Pleco's are a type of suckermouth catfish found in many aquariums. While I originally bought at the recommendation of my brother just to help keep the tank clean, they have become one of my favorites.

I'm no expert, but I have learned a few things about them. Yes, while they do eat some algae and can help a little with cleaning, they won't just keep the tank clean all by themselves. You will still have to do your own work. Also, they should still be fed special pleco food to supplement their diet. They will also feed on some of the other food, but best to give them some of their own.

These grow really fast in their first year, up to 3-5 inches is normal. Then it slows down a bit. These can live pretty long, around 12 years in decent conditions, and can end up 20-25 inches total length on average. Mine are about 2+ years old now and were only about an inch and a half long when I got them from the pet store.

Here's some of the other Goldfish in the tank. They are getting pretty large too!

Anyone else have large Pleco's? Or what is your favorite? Post em up!

Well, I have no idea how old they were when we got them, but I am assuming they were maybe just a few months to a year old given their size then, and that we just got them at the local Petsmart. They didn't seem to grow much that first year, but then really took off! Must be all the algae in my tank and the pleco wafers...
