В кінці лютого 2014 року події в Україні та, безпосередньо в Києві, розвивалися стрімко і непередбачувано. Все місто жило Майданом, але повної впевненості в Перемозі не було - очікувалися жорсткі дії тодішньої влади. Протестувальників у центрі столиці було вже багато тисяч, однак і силовиків стягувалося все більше і більше.
At the end of February 2014, events in Ukraine and directly in Kyiv developed rapidly and unpredictably. The whole city lived on the Maidan, but there was no complete confidence in the Victory - the harsh actions of the then authorities were expected. There were already many thousands of protesters in the center of the capital, but more and more security officers were gathered.
Незважаючи на протистояння з правоохоронцями яке відбувалось раніше, до 18 лютого 2014 року зберігалося перемир'я, якому саме в цей день судилося закінчитися.
Despite the confrontation with law enforcement officers that took place earlier, a truce was maintained until February 18, 2014, which was destined to end on that day.
В описуваний день намічалася мирна хода до Верховної Ради, так як парламент повинен був прийняти зміни до Конституції (вірніше, почати процес цих змін). Однак в повітрі висіла напруга, всі розуміли, що миром хід навряд чи закінчиться.
On the described day, a peaceful march to the Verkhovna Rada was planned, as the parliament had to adopt amendments to the Constitution (or rather, to begin the process of these changes). However, there was tension in the air, everyone understood that the peace course is unlikely to end.
З ранку на вулицю Інститутську вийшло дуже багато людей, вони продовжували йти і йти. Урядовий квартал був перекритий, проїзд по вулиці Садовій був унеможливлений КамАЗом і військовим ЗІЛом, в яких стояли строковики внутрішніх військ. ЗІЛ був оздоблений напередодні дівчатами квіточками і візерунками - надія на мирне вирішення не вмирала. За цими машинами в повній амуніції і бойової готовності перебували підрозділи ВВ і Беркута.
In the morning a lot of people came out on Institutska Street, they kept going and going. The government quarter was blocked, traffic on Sadovaya Street was made impossible by KamAZ and military ZIL in which conscripts of internal troops stood. ZIL was decorated the day before with flowers and patterns for the girls - the hope for a peaceful solution did not die. Behind these vehicles in full ammunition and combat readiness were units of explosives and golden eagles.
Активними діями відрізнялися практично всі люди, незважаючи на вік і статус. Офісні працівники допомагали розбивати бруківку і стягували її до барикад, а бабусі стукали арматурою і каменями по ліхтарним стовпів, створюючи шумовий тиск.
Almost all people were active, regardless of age and status. Office workers helped break the cobblestones and pulled it to the barricades, and the grandmothers knocked on the lampposts with rebar and stones, creating a noise pressure.
Протестуючим вдавалося висмикувати зі строю деяких строковиків і захоплювати їх, так би мовити, в полон. Їх не били, а відводили під охороною на Майдан. Не менша кількість, думаю, потрапляло протестуючих в руки правоохоронців.
Protesters managed to pull out some conscripts and capture them, so to speak, in captivity. They were not beaten, but taken under guard to the Maidan. No less, I think, the protesters fell into the hands of law enforcement.
Приблизно з 14:00 почалася зачистка. Загони Беркута стали жорстко відтісняти протестувальників, використовуючи кийки і травматичну зброю. Буквально за пів години вся вулиця Інститутська була очищена, ті хто не встиг відступити були побиті і затримані. На жаль почався відлік і убитих.
About 14:00 the sweep began. Berkut detachments began to brutally push back the protesters, using batons and traumatic weapons. In just half an hour, the entire Institutska Street was cleared, and those who did not have time to retreat were beaten and detained. Unfortunately, the countdown began and killed.
До вечора почалося повномасштабний наступ на Майдан, всю ніч палали барикади, намети, шини, практично цілком згорів Будинок Профспілок. Територія, контрольована протестуючими на багато зменшилася, однак повністю очистити площу владі не вдалося. Саме з 18 лютого почалися криваві події, піком яких став розстріл Небесної Сотні 20 лютого 2018 року.
By the evening, a full-scale attack on the Maidan began, barricades, tents, and tires were on fire all night, and the Trade Union Building burned down almost completely. The area controlled by the protesters has shrunk a lot, but the authorities have not been able to completely clear the area. It was on February 18 that the bloody events began, culminating in the shooting of the Heavenly Hundred on February 20, 2018.
