Before the full-scale war, Svitlana Skus worked as a labor protection engineer and lived in the Kyiv region. With the beginning of full-scale russian aggression, she and her two children decided to relocate to the central part of Ukraine, where she is from. It was a little calmer there. Already on February, 26, 2022 Svitlana started calling everyone she knows in her native village of Potash, Mankiv district, Cherkasy region: what kind of help can I get involved in? How can it be useful to the army and the country?
"We were so desperate that we couldn't figure out what to do, – Svitlana shares. – I came to the gathering point of people who wanted to become volunteers, everyone together began to decide what our village would produce: weaving camouflage nets, sewing plate carriers, sewing unloading... I decided to sew plate carriers, although I did not see with my eyes what it was and how it is used by the military. I took a ready model as a sample — it was very primitive, but it was necessary to start with something."
Svitlana says that her mother had a simple old sewing machine in her household. But it was extremely difficult to sew on it – because the fabric used was coarse (cordura, oxford), and the old machine barely could manage it. Then Svitlana, without hesitation, has bought an industrial sewing machine, and the process went much faster.
"Having never sat by an industrial machine before, I suddenly began to sew everything: plate carriers, balaclavas, clutches, unloaders, bags for AK, bags for grenades, bags for unloading stores, even uniforms — everything that was needed. It was difficult only in the first days. But I set myself a goal: to succeed. Because you need to help. And everything worked out," — Svitlana says.
Other local volunteers collected money for fittings and fabric, bought materials so that Svitlana and other craftsmen would have something to sew products from. Because the Armed Forces of Ukraine needed them without interruption. Someone else took the sewn to their destination, someone supervised the delivery to the defenders. The system worked and still works very smoothly.
"For almost three months, I did sewing every day, sometimes from eight in the morning until two or three in the morning. Because you understand: someone is really waiting for these products. And the motivation to work non-stop for Ukraine overcame any fatigue. In summer I went back to work, so now I sew in the evenings. But I'm not going to stop."
Svitlana involved her husband and children in her volunteering: they drew details on the fabric and cut them out. And the whole house work was on the shoulders of Svitlana's mother.
"The difference between my first products and the current ones is huge! It seems to me that I have already reached the maximum professional level of tailoring, – Svitlana laughs. – And we took into account all the guys' wishes for improvement: we need one more pocket there, we need to fix a detail here, to move something to another place. We listened, they did."
Svitlana does not hide that there were periods of fatigue. But when soldiers wrote to them that they were lying in the hospital, and their body armor was torn to shreds, but their lives were saved, it gave the volunteers the strength to sew new plate carriers.

Світлана Скус до великої війни працювала інженером з охорони праці, проживала у Київській області. З початком повномасштабної російської агресії вона з двома дітьми вирішила виїхати в центральну частину України, звідки родом. Там було трохи спокійніше. Вже 26 лютого Світлана почала обдзвонювати всіх знайомих в рідному селі Поташ Маньківського району Черкаської області: до якої допомоги можна долучитися? чим вона може бути корисна армії та країні?
«Був такий розпач, що ми не могли зрозуміти, що робити, – ділиться Світлана. – Прийшла в точку збору людей, які хотіли стати волонтерами, всі разом почали вирішувати, чим займатиметься наше село: маскувальні сітки, пошиття плитоносок, пошиття розгрузок... Я вирішила шити плитоноски, хоча в очі не бачила, що то таке, і як його використовують військові. Взяла для зразка відшиту модель – дуже примітивну, але з чогось потрібно було починати».
Світлана розповідає, що в її мами була побутова швейна машина. Але шити на ній було вкрай важко – адже тканина використовувалась груба (кордура, оксфорд), і старенька машинка ледь тягла. Тоді Світлана не роздумуючи придбала промислову швейну машину, і процес пішов значно жвавіше.
«Ні разу до цього не сидівши за промисловою машиною, я почала раптом шити все: плитоноски, балаклави, муфти, розгрузки, підсумки до АК, підсумки до гранат, сумки під скидання магазинів, навіть форму – все, що було потрібно. Було важко тільки в перші дні. Але я посталила собі ціль: щоб в мене вийшло. Бо потрібно допомагати. І все вийшло», – розповідає Світлана.
Інші місцеві волонтери збирали гроші на фурнітуру і тканину, купували матеріали, щоб Світлані і таким же майстриням було з чого безперебійно шити вироби для ЗСУ. Ще хтось відвозив відшите в пункти призначення, хтось контролював видачу захисникам. Система працювала і досі працює дуже злагоджено.
«Майже три місяці я займалася пошиттям щоденно, інколи з восьмої ранку до другої-третьої години ночі. Бо ж розумієш: хтось дуже чекає цих виробів. І мотивація працювати без перерв задля України долала будь-яку втому. Наприкінці травня я вийшла на роботу, тож тепер шию тільки вечорами. Але зупинятись не збираюся».
Світлана долучила до свого волонтерства і чоловіка, і дітей: вони креслили на тканині деталі та вирізали їх. А весь побут ліг на плечі Світланиної мами.
«Різниця між моїми першими виробами і теперішніми – колосальна! Мені здається, я вже вийшла на максимально професійний рівень швацтва, – сміється Світлана. – І ми враховували всі побажання хлопців по вдосконаленню: там кишеньку треба ще одну, там десь детальку дошити, щось в інше місце перенести. Прислухалися, робили».
Світлана не приховує, що були й періоди втоми. Але коли їм писали бійці, що лежать в госпіталі, і бронежилети розірвано вщент, проте життя врятовані, це додавало сил шити нові плитоноски.
