And today in my regular column #uzhhorodsculptures "Small but Weighty Reasons to Visit Uzhhorod" we will talk about a world-famous artist who received recognition after his death, and in his homeland, he was generally considered crazy.
Meet - Tivadar Chontwari Kostka came on his own skates directly to the Hive blockchain.

Чонтварі це геніальний угорський художник самоук, котрий був ровесником Ван Гога та значно випереджав свій час. Він народився 5 липня 1853 року у місті Сабінов, яке сьогодні знаходиться на території Словаччини. Я впевнена, всі бачили ось цю картину нижче, таємницю якої відкрили всього декілька років тому. Саме про цього автора і повогоримо.
Chontwari is a genius Hungarian self-taught artist who was the same age as Van Gogh and far ahead of his time. He was born on July 5, 1853, in the town of Sabinov, which is now in Slovakia. I'm sure everyone has seen this picture below, the secret of which was discovered only a few years ago. It is about this author and let's talk.
У 1865 році сім’я Чонтварі переїхала до села Середнє, що на Ужгородщині, а юного Тівадара віддали на навчання у комерційну школу в місті Ужгород. В той час майбутній художник не тільки навчався в нашому місті, а і підпрацьовував на місцевому ринку.
In 1865, the Chontvari family moved to the village of Seredne in the Uzhhorod region, and the young Tivadar was sent to study at a commercial school in the city of Uzhhorod. At that time, the future artist not only studied in our city but also worked part-time in the local market.
Так, як батько Чонтварі був власником аптеки в Середньому, то і син пішов по його слідам і вже після закінчення навчання став аптекарем. Пропрацював в цій сфері він майже 14 років, після чого до нього явилась муза і Тівадар кардинально змінив звичайне життя.
Just as Chontwari's father was the owner of a pharmacy in Sredny, his son followed in his footsteps and became a pharmacist after graduation. He worked in this field for almost 14 years, after which a muse came to him and Tivadar radically changed his ordinary life.
Чонтварі почав займатись живописом в середині 1890-х років і йому належить більше ста картин. Значна частина була виконана в період між 1903 та 1909 років і за стилістикою близька до експресіонізму. Полотна художника виставлялись в 1907 році в Парижі та деяких інших країнах Європи, проте в Угорщині (котра і є батьківщиною художника) його не сприймали.
Chontwari began painting in the mid-1890s and owns more than a hundred paintings. Much of it was made between 1903 and 1909 and is stylistically close to Expressionism. The artist's paintings were exhibited in 1907 in Paris and some other European countries, but in Hungary (which is the artist's homeland) he was not accepted.
Співвітчизники вважали його божевільним через дивну поведінку, аскетичний спосіб життя та схильність при спілкуванні впадати в пророчий тон. Проте, на сьогоднішній день основні роботи художника зібрані в музеї міста Печа, котре являється п’ятим за величиною містом Угорщини. В тому ж місті встановлено пам’ятник Чонтварі в повний зріст.
His compatriots considered him insane because of his strange behaviour, ascetic lifestyle, and tendency to fall into a prophetic tone when communicating. However, today the main works of the artist are collected in the museum of the city of Pecs, which is the fifth-largest city in Hungary. A full-length monument to Chontwari has been erected in the same city.

Все досить просто, Чонтварі по праву можна вважати угорським художником україно-словацького походження. До того, ж досить довгий період життя він прожив саме в нашому місті. В своїх спогадах він згадав про місто Ужгород одним рядком: "вчився я не дуже, але в Ужгороді був кращим серед ковзанярів".
It's quite simple, Chontwari can rightly be considered a Hungarian artist of Ukrainian-Slovak origin. Besides, he lived in our city for a long time. In his memoirs, he mentioned the city of Uzhhorod in one line: "I did not study much, but in Uzhhorod, I was the best among skaters".
Яка історія в скульптури? / What is the history of sculpture?
Відкрили міні-скульптуру 10 березня 2016 року і вона стала 27-ю серед пам’яток міста. Скульптором традиційно став Михайло Колодко, а ідею увіковічнити художника реалізували в рамках спільного проекту Генерального Консульства Угорщини в Ужгороді і громадської організації "Паннонія".
The mini-sculpture was unveiled on March 10, 2016, and became the 27th among the city's attractions. Mykhailo Kolodko traditionally became a sculptor, and the idea of perpetuating the artist was realized within the framework of a joint project of the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzhhorod and the public organization "Pannonia".
На відкритті скульптор відзначив, що місце для скульптури обрано не випадково, адже частина перил, на якій "поселили" Чонтварі, являється частиною старого мосту, котра збереглась ще з тих часів, коли в Ужгороді жив сам прототип скульптурки.
At the opening, the sculptor noted that the place for the sculpture was chosen not by chance because part of the railing on which Chontwari "settled" is part of the old bridge, which has survived since the time when the prototype of the sculpture lived in Uzhhorod.
До того ж в старі часи, в цьому місці річка взимку перетворювалась в каток, де і набував майстерності і змагався з однолітками ковзаняр і геніальний художник Тиводар Чонтварі. До речі, художника зобразили на ковзанах не тільки через його любов до цього виду спорту, а і як метафору, щодо людини, котра значно випереджала свій час та неслась вперед.
In addition, in the old days, in this place, the river turned into a skating rink in winter, where skater and genius artist Tivodar Chontwari acquired skills and competed with his peers. By the way, the artist was depicted on skates not only because of his love for this sport but also as a metaphor for a man who was much ahead of his time and rushed forward.
