In 1690, Hetman Ivan Mazepa began the construction of Mykyl's Cathedral in Kyiv with his own funds. This typical example of Cossack Baroque architecture was erected in all its glory in 1696 on the site of the twisted Glory Square in Pechersk.
Сам гетьман Мазепа активно долучився до проєкту будівництва, тим самим надавши собору унікального архітектурного стилю того часу. Зовнішній вигляд цієї капітальної кам'ної споруди вражав ззовні, а всередині був прикрашений семиярусним іконостасом, прикрашений скульптурами та мереживною різьбою ювелірної роботи тогочасних майстрів.
Ukrainian hetman Mazepa himself actively participated in the construction project, thereby giving the cathedral a unique architectural style of that time. The appearance of this capital stone structure was impressive from the outside, and inside it was decorated with a seven-tiered iconostasis, decorated with sculptures and lace carvings of the jewelry work of the masters of that time.
В 1918 році, під час наступу на Київ більшовики обстріляли Микільський собор з лівого берега Дніпра. Тоді в собор влучило 63 снаряди.
Остаточно більшовики знищили цей прекрасний собор в 1934 році, Згодом на цьому місці радянська влада збудувала палац піонерів та готель "Салют".
In 1918, during the offensive on Kyiv, the Bolsheviks fired at the Mykyl Cathedral from the left bank of the Dnieper. Then 63 shells hit the cathedral.
The Bolsheviks finally destroyed this beautiful cathedral in 1934. Subsequently, the Soviet authorities built the Palace of Pioneers and the Salyut Hotel on this site.
Цікавий історичний факт. В 1919 році в Микільському соборі відслужили першу Літургію українською мовою, а церковним хором, який супроводжував службу диригував видатний український композитор Микола Леонтович.
