Hello dear Mom and Dad

Today, I want to talk to you about a subject that I consider very important for every child, during their time at school. But this time I will speak to you, not as a mother, but from my experience as a teacher.

When we meet a child with limited capabilities, our first reaction is to feel sorry or pity for him/her. As a teacher, that would be my first mistake. Contrary to what we have become accustomed to think, the child with limited capacity, from any point of view, does not need pity but Action.

When we allow ourselves to be moved by pity, we tend to do things that do nothing to help the child in his situation, but rather condemn him to remain in it. Expressions such as "Poor child", "Leave him alone", "He is in his own world", "He doesn't know what he is doing", "leave her/him be", among other similar expressions, only show our emotional incapacity as human beings and the lack of intention to get out of our comfort zone.

Before becoming a mother of children with limited capacities, I had been a second grade elementary school teacher and for two years I had the mission of assisting children with this condition and one of the things I set out to do was to learn from them and get into their world. To understand the way in which I could explain what I wanted them to understand and communicate with them as fluently as they would allow.

I remember that there were few times when I demanded something from them in a rigorous way, without first explaining to them what it meant what they were going to do. I read and attended the school courses I was supposed to, all to offer them real help, something they would feel encouraged to follow.

As I put them in context, they responded. When they didn't want to work in an area, I would give them some space and tell them, if you want, take a break and we'll finish up later. I can assure you that when they returned to their activity, they finished it without stopping, and when that happened, they received words of praise and motivation from all the teachers who knew them.

In my classroom, all of them were special children, none of them had the preference, nor were they the teacher's favorite. I wanted their classmates to feel that they were their friends who sometimes needed help rather than pity, not a different treatment but one based on respect for others.

I have the firm belief that teaching based on the stimulation of what they can do and not on what we want to achieve by taking the regular method of teaching, stimulating their abilities within their limitations, which in fact we know they have, in addition to respecting the person in front of us, we can reap great fruits.

To my teaching friends I want to share a phrase that I once read and I took it for myself because I believe that everything in God's time, happens when it should. We only have to learn to wait and in good ways, with the best words of motivation and encouragement to effectively help these little beings that are in our care, the rest will come by itself.

Good things come to those who know how to wait.
