I am a very protective, very careful mother chicken and I think I have always been concerned about the issue of bullying and my daughters. I was never a victim of this in any aspect of my life but I see with some fear (TERROR) that this phenomenon is becoming more and more frequent and that my daughters may be victims of it or even worse, they are victimizers. Hearing my older nieces say "so and so is bullying me" leaves me open-mouthed. I am concerned, especially at school, I think that leaving the girls in that place where they have no one, where anything can happen to them and I am far away scares me, but it is something that I am going to overcome little by little.

However, a few months ago my daughters shared every afternoon between 5 and 6 in the afternoon with the neighbors on the street, the routine is to sit on the porch of my house and watch them play and run. 5-year-old Marcela does not have those skills to play with a soccer ball, for example, many times she does not like to get dirty, or to run a bicycle with such ease and that has been a reason to receive ridicule from her friends and neighbors to the point of reaching crying to me. She has felt bad about it and my heart breaks when I see her come to me crying or when I hear the things they say to her. The first few times I did what I had to do, approach the children and in a "sweet" way let them know that Marcela has nothing wrong and is not one of those things they tell her, that unfortunately she is the smallest of the group and because she is small there are many things she does not know. They thought she was scolding them and their reaction to the following days was not to get so close to her and remove her body as we say, avoid her and even ignore her, which does not solve the problem.

With the days this diminished, the children have a tremendous ability to forget and start over so that first confrontation allowed me to make it clear that she is the same as everyone else and that I will be there attentive so that "that" does not repeat itself. The important thing is done behind closed doors, which is to talk, educate, reinforce and teach my daughters what is the good and the bad of this situation and let her know that none of that that makes her feel bad and sad is true. I tell them phrases like "children don't know you, they say things that are not true and we should not listen to that, remember that you are pretty, intelligent, brave .....". I also try to make her understand how to respond, how to face this but it is a very difficult thing with her so small. He can hardly answer "don't tell me those things" and that for me is progress.

Bullying will surely be part of their lives and I only hope to give them the necessary tools to face it and maintain a healthy self-esteem, with the intention that they do not allow it or that they carry it out. It is a daily task because even the closest family can be hurtful, abusive, invasive, rude, and even humiliating, so it is not just a mother-daughter job but a family and environment job. Setting limits, setting an example, taking care of what we say in front of children, avoiding labels, correcting negative attitudes, recognizing mistakes and asking for forgiveness, maintaining healthy and effective communication, can be the bases for a healthy self-esteem in our children and hence, a good relationship with others.
