Fungi Friday: My Exciting Late Winter Fungi Find

in Fungi Lovers3 years ago

#fungifriday by @ewkaw

I was absolutely thrilled when a saw this amazing display of fungi on a Maple tree.
My search for more firewood to burn in my stove led to a new and first time exciting fungi sighting.

I'm thinking...
Perhaps I might have found Mossy Cap Polypores.
(Oxyporus populinus)

Much further out in the woods on the same day..
I also saw these growing on a Beech tree..!

🤔
Could they too possibly be..
Mossy Caps Polypores or another Polypore variation?

Curious and still excited
I went back out in the woods a week later to take a more pictures and see if there were any developmental changes after a stretch of mild weather.
The only change was the snow around the Maple tree had melted.

I wanted to take more pictures of the fungus on the Beech tree but I couldn't find them.
I haven't given up trying to find the tree they were on.
I welcome identification feedback.

The above and below photos were taken back in February.
I couldn't resist taking a picture of this cool appearing Birch Polypore (Fomitopsis betulina) covered with both snow and ice.
The little hanging icicles look like fangs to me !
My far stretched imagination is a force to be reckoned with 😉.

Birch Polypores are common sighting for me all year round.
Ordinary as they may be
and being a FungiLover....
I always enjoy seeing them when I'm out and about in the woods.

Keep an eye out for chaga with that birch polypore hanging around.

Thank you..!
@sketch.and.jam
I will keep an eye out for sure. I didn't find any chaga last year.
:-)

I thought the big polypore might have been a northern tooth but it looks much different now that I looked it up. Who knows what it might be.

🤗
@sketch.and.jam
My first thought when I saw it from a bit of a distance was Northern Tooth too.
It's sold hard like a rock.
So exciting to find something new this time of year.
It's on my property so I can easily check on it from time time and I'm planning for sure doing that.
Thank you for doing some research on it.
:-)

The first mushroom photography looks like a rock ... just gorgeous ...

The snow covered mushrooms are simply amazing ..😍😍

thank you for sharing😍

🤗Thank you..!
@briayana
It's as hard as a rock and really is quite beautiful.
I was and still am excited about having found it.
I'm always thrilled when I find a new different fungi.
:-)

Amazing:)

They look amazing like a big cone of ice-cream 😊

Thank You..!!
@kohsamui99
Oh..Wow..!!
It does kinda look like fungi icecream.
I didn't make the visual association until you made mention. Cool..!
:-)

Haha...now it seems like we have the same imagination it would take a team to get through that fungi ice-cream. 😄
