Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

in Self Improvement4 years ago

We know the saying that goes - two steps forward one step back. This is an age old idea of consolidation. Whenever you are moving forward in your life, in a project or any other initiative that you are involved in do not forget to pause, assess, look around and make sure everything is happening the way it was supposed to happen.

It is a very basic idea but we tend to overlook. We typically are so overwhelmed and blinded by the success, the high of achieving and being on top, we tend to forget to follow the basics.

That’s the cycle we have to deal with and the wave of success and failure we need to manage. Why do you think it is recommended to pause (look around)?

Check your speed

The first and foremost it is to check your speed. When you are achieving and enjoying success, you tend to not fully understand the speed with which you are moving forward. It is always good to check your speed to understand if it is within your limit and you can handle it. Pausing and checking and making sure everything is as designed won’t limit your speed in the long run.

Change in strategy

Once you pause, it gives you time to rethink and strategize. The planning that we have done in the beginning may need tweaking, adjusting or overhauling. Initial designs may work for the time being but it is always good to touch base and make sure that there are no other strategies that can help the job done efficiently.

As a project manager, I used to pause and hold to make sure the implementation strategy we devised early on in the project is still valid to deliver the output in a timely manner.

Learning

Pausing and one step backward is always good for learning. Organizational management theories talk about double loop and triple loop learning. Pausing and one step backward trigger double loop learning. It means you are reflecting on the job that’s completed and trying to understand if there are things that may contribute to the ongoing success or to figure out ways to rectify the things that may hinder the speed moving forward.

It is funny how my little one reminded me of this little gem of the message. He is learning to walk now and as a diligent father, I am behind him - always. I can see him walking fast - which makes him lose control. What he does - is pause and regain control, assess the situation and make that final call to raise his foot for the next step. This shows how natural it is to humans and how ingrained this philosophy is in our evolution. We just tend to forget the basics.

This is what BITCOIN exactly does ;-)

Dayum, BTC is like my son 😁 young and still learning tips and tricks

Ah I loved that time. It never goes from standing to walking, it's standing to just straight fucking running LOL it's hilarious to watch. Ours doesn't stop running, ever! He's several years old now lol

It's always good to pause and rethink things. It helps when you have multiple people you are working with so you have an opportunity to do this lol I often have little time to pause but I force myself to. Best to take these periodic breaks so we can recharge the drive a bit, I think.

lol. he is running everywhere and I have to be vigilant all day. Like, seriously all day long. Being on parental leave made me realize how things that I though important were not that important. It's good to take a break - if you can afford it :)
