[ENG/ESP] Review - The Avengers

English | Inglés

Greetings, Hive!

Finally the time had come, Marvel Studios’ ambitious project to create an interconnected universe of films came true, a project that began in 2008 with the risky Iron Man, and the last step to consolidate it was to unite all the superheroes presented over these 5 years in the same film. That's how in 2012 The Avengers arrived, the film that ended up unleashing the superhero phenomenon in cinema and that - in a positive way or not - created a before and after in the industry. For a long time this was one of my favorite movies in life, I saw it about 3 or 4 times in the theater and countless other times on Blu-Ray, but how has the passage of time treated it? I'm curious about it because this whole first phase has given me quite a few surprises.

So without any further ado, let's start!

The Avengers was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Disney (who by the way, by that time had already bought Marvel), was directed by Joss Whedon and the cast included most of the actors we saw in the leading roles of their respective movies; Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jeremy Renner as Bart Clinton/Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and of course the star who made it all possible, Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton in the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk because, according to the production, it was going to be too complicated to have Norton and Downey working on the same set, so in the end they decided to keep Downey in the cast. The Avengers was an immediate success around the world, breaking several box office records and grossing over $1 billion in tickets, and is currently the seventh highest grossing film in history.

Plot-wise we find ourselves with a fairly simple film - in a good way - but we'll see why later on. Loki, God of Mischief and Thor's brother, is making a pact with the alien race of the Chitauri; in exchange for recovering the Tesseract they will give Loki an army to conquer Earth. Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. is studying the Tesseract but are interrupted by the arrival of Loki to the facility, who after killing a couple of S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers and bewitching agent Clint Barton and Dr. Erick Selvig, steals the Tesseract and flees the facility. Faced with this potential threat on a global scale, Nick Fury decides to bring together the earth's mightiest heroes to form a team to stop Loki and retrieve the Tesseract: The Avengers.

As you can tell the plot of this movie is not complicated at all, in fact, it's pretty simple, but I think that's fine and really all it needs is an excuse to put all the superheroes together against a common evil. It was a wise move to bring back Loki as the antagonist and especially in this first film, as he was by far the best villain so far in Marvel movies, plus there were a lot of new elements to introduce and two hours of footage wasn't going to be enough to introduce a new villain. While it may seem obvious, the main focus of the film are The Avengers, but I'm not just saying that because they're the main characters and they're all about being friends and getting along, in fact it's quite the opposite, the first half of the film focuses solely on bringing the team together and showing how hard it is to get such a quirky group of characters to work together.

They've all been through their own journey to get there and that makes them have different views on the situation; While for Tony Stark it's just another day in the life of Iron Man, Steve Rogers is still going through the difficulties of adapting to a life and time where he doesn't belong, I think this is the great thing about Marvel taking the time to make an introductory movie for each character, because at this point we already know each of the characters, we know their history and motivations so there's no need to dwell on that, allowing us to jump right into the development of The Avengers as a team. Without a doubt my favorite moments of the film are the discussions and differences that the heroes have in their first meetings; for example, the first time Iron Man, Thor and Captain America meet is in a fight between them because Thor intends to take Loki to Asgard, and Iron Man and Captain America interrupt him because only Loki knows the whereabouts of the Tesseract, and so several scenes that are quite coherent and enjoyable in addition to giving us hints of what will happen in the future of these films.

The Avengers is a purely action film and whose main attraction is the superheroes’ crossover above anything else, that's fine because the film complies excellently in this section, has very good action scenes and takes advantage of all the skills of each of the heroes very well, the special effects accompany phenomenally all the action of the footage, and in fact, I think to this point is the best CGI that Marvel Studios has. There is one sequence shot scene that is in my opinion one of the best in the movie, this scene happens in the big fight in the last stretch of the movie and it's a shot that goes all over the city showing the fight that each avenger is having. So yes, we came here to watch an action movie, so expecting a deep and dedicated plot is almost innocent, and this is something I've always enjoyed about Marvel over DC Comics, I feel that most of the time Marvel's stories are much less heavy and they don't get as complicated with existential dilemmas as - in my opinion - DC Comics does. Mind you, I'm not criticizing; it's simply a matter of preference.

While watching this movie again (and after having seen all the previous ones) I also realized that it was here where they started to abuse the comedy resource... The Avengers is the movie that tries to be funny the most in the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sometimes it succeeds, sometimes not so much, but I guess the film’s success was what made Marvel decide to keep that humorous tone throughout the rest of the movies.

divisoravengers-removebg-preview.png

And I really think that's the only thing you can say about The Avengers, if you take away the name of the characters it could be any other action movie and that's it. However, I think what makes The Avengers so special is its legacy, watching it nowadays may not be so impressive next to, for example, Infinity War or Endgame, plus we are already used to superhero movies, annually at least 6 superhero movies are made and now we also have the Disney+ series, rather I think that so much content ends up being overwhelming and makes it lose the magic.

gif11.gif

But 10 years ago this was not so, 10 years ago it was a dream that we would see our favorite superheroes share the screen, it was a dream that this kind of projects were made with so much love because this market was not profitable, besides The Avengers nor its members were particularly popular at Marvel comics, that's why 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to the Fantastic 4 and the X-Men; while Sony Pictures acquired the rights to Spider-Man, heroes that were much more popular. However, Marvel Studios decided to bet on The Avengers anyway and the result of this bet we already know. Everything in Marvel and the world of superheroes changed after this movie, adults who never expected to see something like this saw their dream come true, children who had never had contact with this medium grew up watching Iron Man or Captain America, a whole new generation of fans was formed after this movie, and besides that, it was a gateway to the world of comics and a step to stop stigmatizing these stories and more people in the world could enjoy them. The Avengers is an important movie for the world of cinema because of its legacy and for everything that happened after its release more than for being a good movie itself, but don't get me wrong, this is not a bad thing at all, it's a movie whose value lies in what it meant to all those people who felt joy in their hearts when they watched it in the cinema.

¡Saludos, Hive!

Without a doubt The Avengers stood the test of time very well, even though I found a few flaws in its narrative, I feel it's not something to reproach it for, since all we needed was an excuse to see Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor fighting side by side to defend (or rather avenge) the earth. I still enjoy it immensely even though it's so small in scale today, but what can I do? It's a movie that has a special place in my heart, moreover, in the post-credits scene, none other than Thanos, the mad titan, appears, so this conflict is about to escalate to a cosmic scale.... What about? Do you think The Avengers has aged well? Or on the contrary, do you think that in comparison to the scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this movie is nothing?
