I think we all know the story of Pinocchio, whether it's from the Disney version released many years ago or other different versions that have been adapted from the original story. In this case, around 2019 an italian director decided to make his version of Pinocchio, which I understand is somehow more faithful to the original story. Generally speaking, it is a fantasy film but a bit less colorful than other versions of Pinocchio that we have watched, the film tries to mix the sometimes gray and melancholic tone of the color palette with the fantasy topics.

It could be said that in essence it is the same story that we know but told and executed in a different way, we have Geppeto, a carpenter who is not going through his best moments, since he is living in extreme poverty, this is how Geppeto decides to create a wooden doll, the woden doll comes to life, Gepetto calls him Pinocchio and this is how Pinocchio wishes to find a way to become a human.

The biggest change that this version of Pinocchio undergoes is in its characters. For example, there is Gepetto, Pinocchio's father, who is always portrayed as a fairly good person, without any malice; In this film it is different because despite the Gepetto of this version is not a bad person or anything like that, he has some malice, lying on certain occasions, I must clarify that this is not done with bad intentions and it´s actually refreshing to watch a different version of Gepetto, something more human, who is capable of lying to get a job.

On the other hand we have the same Pinocchio, Disney's Pinocchio was not someone bad, nor rebellious, the bad things he did in his film is due to simple ignorance and that he was deceived all the time, the 2019 version shows a Pinocchio without arriving to be someone evil but quite rebellious, disobeying his father because he did not want to pay attention to him and not only out of ignorance, which led him to bad situations that he had to solve by himself or with the help of certain characters.

Other characters characteristic of Pinocchio appear in this film, although the director gives himself some freedom to change certain designs and attitudes without being something radical, in essence they are the same characters, some perhaps taking on a somewhat more adult personality.

One of the things that I liked the most about this adaptation of Pinocchio is its photography, it really is beautiful, this film really knows how to give very good shots of his world and many times I was fascinated by how beautiful photography looks in this film. Among my favorites is the shot in which Pinocchio is hanging from a tree waiting for his death, I think this scene was made with the idea of making a parallel with the original story in which Pinocchio also hangs from a tree.

In general I had no problem with the film except for the fact that it does not risk, that is, we have seen and read the story of Pinocchio so many times that seeing more of the same is a bit disappointing, it is true that the film does some other change with respect to the stories we know but it is not substantial, as I said, it is the same story but told a little differently, it is not something bad objectively but if you expect something more watching it, I warn you that it will be more of the same narratively speaking.

Even so, what I have said does not detract from the merit of this adaptation, since thanks to its color palette, its photography and other small details, they make this experience a very good one and a good alternative to everything we have seen from Pinocchio so far.
