Un clásico de la ciencia ficción
I've said it before: I'm not a fan of science fiction. By that I mean that most of the movies I watch do not belong to this genre. What's more, I think that next to action and horror movies, sci-fi is the other type of cinema that attracts me the least, not because of anything specific against it, it's just that I like more dramas and movies with few visual effects.
Lo he dicho antes: no soy fanático de la ciencia ficción. Con eso quiero decir que la mayoría de las películas que veo no pertenecen a este género. Es más, creo que junto al cine de acción y el de terror, el sci-fi es el otro tipo de cine que menos me atraen, no por nada específico en contra suya, es sólo que me gustan más los dramas y las películas con pocos efectos visuales.
However, I've loved some science fiction films (Interstellar, for example) and that together with the fact that Denis Villeneuve directed the sequel to what is considered one of the classic films within the genre made me want to see the mythical Blade Runner released in 1982 starring Harrison Ford.
The film imagines a future that for us, now in 2021, is a past not comparable to that fantasy. In the year 2019 in the city of Los Angeles, the Tyrell Corporation designed and created, thanks to advances in genetic engineering, a generation of robots, the Nexus 6, virtually identical to human beings, but superior in strength and agility. These robots are known by the name of Replicants. Used as slaves in Earth's outer colonies, the Replicants rebelled and were banished from our planet. However, some Replicants can still be found there who constitute a threat to society and that's why there are special police brigades, the so-called Blade Runners, who have the order to "retire" them, that is, to execute the Replicants.
Sin embargo, he amado algunas películas de ciencia ficción (Interstellar, por ejemplo) y eso junto al hecho de que Denis Villeneuve dirigiera la secuela de la que es considerada una de las películas clásicas dentro del género me hizo querer ver la mítica Blade Runner estrenada en 1982 con Harrison Ford como protagonista.
La cinta imagina un futuro que para nosotros, ahora en 2021, es un pasado nada comparable a esa fantasía. Corre el año de 2019 en la ciudad de Los Ángeles y la Tyrell Corporation diseñó y creó, gracias a los avances de la ingeniería genética, una generación de robots, los Nexus 6, virtualmente idénticos al ser humano, pero superiores en fuerza y agilidad. Estos robots son conocidos con el nombre de Replicantes. Utilizados como esclavos en las colonias exteriores de la Tierra, los Replicantes se rebelaron y fueron desterrados de nuestro planeta. Sin embargo, aún pueden encontrarse algunos Replicantes por allí que constituyen una amenaza para la sociedad y por eso existen brigadas especiales de policía, los llamados Blade Runners, quiénes tienenla orden de "retirarlos", es decir, ejecutar a los Replicantes.
After a serious incident involving some Replicants, former Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is called back to duty to find and "retire" the fugitives.
Tras un grave incidente en el que están implicados algunos Replicantes, el ex Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) es llamado de nuevo al servicio para encontrar y "retirar" a los fugitivos.
Thus begins a black novel story with crimes, investigations and clues that lead the protagonist to each of the Replicants that he must retire. On his journey he runs into former colleagues, the scientist who created the Nexus 6, and other characters who lead to interesting reflections, for example, what makes us human? The Replicants have all the appearance of human beings and although they have a shorter life (can it be called "life"?), about four years, they also face death like us. In fact, Roy Batty (very well played by Rutger Hauer), something like the leader of the group of fugitives, has the idea of looking for its creator precisely to ask him to prolong its existence, how can a robot cling so much to its existence ?
Comienza así una historia de novela negra con crímenes, investigaciones y pistas que van conduciendo al protagonista hacia cada uno de los Replicantes que debe retirar. En su viaje se topa con ex compañeros, con el científico creador de los Nexus 6 y con otros personajes que van propiciando reflexiones interesantes, por ejemplo, ¿qué es lo que nos hace humanos? Los Replicantes tienen toda la apariencia de los seres humanos y aunque tienen una vida (¿puede llamarse "vida"?) más corta, de apenas unos cuatro años, también se enfrentan como nosotros a la muerte. De hecho, Roy Batty (muy bien interpretado por Rutger Hauer), algo así como el líder del grupo de fugitivos, tiene la idea de buscar a su creador precisamente para pedirle que prolongue su existencia, ¿cómo puede un robot aferrarse tanto a su existencia?
Because, despite the visual effects and the detective narrative, this story examines deep issues such as the responsibility of the creator towards his creation (like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), the transience of human existence, the desire of man to imitate God creating life (scientific conquest or natural aberration?), Cloning and of course, our mortality.
Porque, a pesar de los efectos visuales y de la narrativa policíaca, esta historia analiza temas profundos como la responsabilidad del creador hacia su creación (como el Frankenstein de Mary Shelley), la transitoriedad de la existencia humana, el deseo del hombre de imitar a Dios al crear vida (¿conquista científica o aberración natural?), la clonación y por supuesto, nuestra mortalidad.
All this added to a brilliantly constructed gloomy aesthetic, a dark atmosphere in which the light is artificial, it rains all the time and the buildings and streets are full of garbage, of abandoned machines, which helps to give a gloomy tone to the future; and on the other hand, the incidents that arise from very short scenes or very specific phrases in the script, make the film hypnotize, despite having a very slow narrative.
Todo ello sumado a una estética lúgubre genialmente construida, una atmósfera oscura en la que la luz es artificial, llueve todo el tiempo y los edificios y las calles están llenas de basura, de máquinas abandonadas, lo que ayuda a dar un tono sombrío al futuro; y por otro lado, las incidencias que se desprenden de escenas muy breves o de frases muy puntuales en el guión, hacen que la película hipnotice, a pesar de tener un ritmo muy lento.
Because yes, it must be said, the film is slow and there are not so many action sequences and they aren't so long, but it's because the central drama is not in the blows or the lasers but in that desire of the Replicant to continue living while running away from the same species that created him: his hunter is his own father. That very human desire is crystallized in Roy's famous speech towards the end of the film:
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die"
Incredible way to say goodbye, the right way to specify their existence and ours: everything we have seen, what we carry within us, disappears with our last breath. Masterly.
Porque sí, hay que decirlo, la película es lenta y no hay tantas secuencias de acción ni son tan prolongadas, pero es porque el drama central no está en los golpes o los rayos láser sino en ese deseo del Replicante de seguir viviendo mientras huye de la misma especie que lo creó: su cazador es su propio padre. Ese deseo tan humano se cristaliza en el célebre discurso de Roy hacia el final de la cinta:
"He visto cosas que ustedes nunca hubieran podido imaginar. Naves de combate en llamas en el hombro de Orión. He visto relámpagos resplandeciendo en la oscuridad cerca de la entrada de Tannhäuser. Todos esos momentos se perderán en el tiempo, como lágrimas en la lluvia. Llegó la hora de morir."
Increíble forma de despedirse, acertada manera de concretar su existencia y la nuestra: todo lo que hemos visto, lo que llevamos dentro de nosotros, desaparece con nuestro último suspiro. Magistral.
I once read a science fiction novel by the writer Rosa Montero called precisely Lágrimas en la lluvia (Tears in the rain). At that time I hadn't seen this tape and I didn't understand the reference, but it's also a story of survival, about political morality and individual ethics, about love and the need of the other, about memory and identity, in which also appear the Replicants. If you liked the Blade Runner movies, read Rosa Montero's novel and also read, of course, the book on which the film is based, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick one of the literary geniuses of contemporary science fiction along with Isaac Asimov, among others.
Una vez leí una novela de ciencia ficción de la escritora Rosa Montero llamada precisamente Lágrimas en la lluvia. En ese momento no había visto esta cinta y no comprendí la referencia, pero se trata también de una historia de supervivencia, sobre la moral política y la ética individual, sobre el amor y la necesidad del otro, sobre la memoria y la identidad, en la que aparecen también los Replicantes. Si les gustó la películas Blade Runner, lean la novela de Rosa Montero y también lean, por supuesto el libro en el que se basa la películas, ¿Sueñan los androides con ovejas eléctricas? de Philip K. Dick uno de los genios literarios de la ciencia ficción contemporánea junto a Isaac Asimov, entre otros.
Finally, another of the things that I liked the most about the film was the ending. When Deckard rescues Rachael (the experimental Replicant, Tyrell's secretary, who inserted mementos of his boss's niece to create an identity consciousness) and finds an origami figure on the ground, he realizes that Gaff (another police officer) has let them escape. Throughout the film we saw Gaff make origami of different figures and that would have been all if it had not been for that last figure is that of a unicorn, precisely the same animal that Deckard dreams of (?) At some point of the film, raising an excellent question to lower the curtain: is Deckard a Replicant? The answer to the question matters little, the important thing is to generate doubt.
Por último, otra de las cosas que más me gustó de la cinta fue el final. Cuando Deckard rescata a Rachael (la Replicante experimental, secretaria de Tyrell, quien le insertaron recuerdos de la sobrina de su jefe para crearle una consciencia de identidad) y encuentra una figura de origami en el suelo, se da cuenta de que Gaff (otro policía) los ha dejado escapar. A lo largo de la cinta vimos a Gaff hacer origami de diferentes figuras y en eso habría quedado todo si no hubiera sido porque esa última figura es la de un unicornio, precisamente el mismo animal con el que Deckard sueña (¿?) en algún momento de la película, suscitando una excelente pregunta para bajar el telón: ¿es Deckard un Replicante? Poco importa la respuesta a la pregunta, lo importante es generar la duda.
Out of all that and much more that I reserved, I think Blade Runner is one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen. The direction, the scenography, the script, the central drama, the philosophy that it encompasses, everything helps to configure a memorable story. Now I can see the sequel made by Denis Villeneuve in 2017, thirty-five years after the premiere of the original. I'm ready.
De todo eso y mucho más que me reservé, creo que Blade Runner es una de las mejores películas de ciencia ficción que he visto. La dirección, la escenografía, el guión, el drama central, la filosofía que encierra, todo ayuda a configurar una historia memorable. Ahora sí puedo ver la secuela realizada por Denis Villeneuve en 2017, treinta y cinco años después del estreno de la original. Estoy listo.

Par mi es un placer ver este film todas las vece.s que puedo, hasta tengo una vieja version en vhs que compre cuando una famosa videotienda cerro y liquido todas las peliculas.
Yo lo leí en esa edición que puse en el post pero han salido otras luego, de bolsillo. Me hizo recordar la época de los VHS cuando alquilaba las películas. Muchas gracias por leerme.
La vi hace poco (E hice un post también al respecto jajaja) sin duda es bastante densa, como dices su ritmo no es precisamente acelerado.
Compensa con su genial trasfondo, no solo es brillante a nivel estético sino en lo sustancial, su estética lúgubre complementa a la perfección los temas que busca desarrollar. Una de las cintas de ciencia ficción más grandes que se han hecho.
