I am a movie lover and that's why I read many reviews and find movie recommendations everywhere, I add names of directors, actors, screenwriters, films, to my extensive "to watch" list and I consider very much the source from which I take the information. Whether I do it through a social network or an internet page, I am constantly expanding my movies library according to external recommendations to see different types of stories.
Soy un amante del cine y por eso leo muchas reseñas y encuentro en todas partes recomendaciones de películas, agrego nombres de directores, de actores, de guionistas, de films, a mi extensa lista por ver y considero mucho la fuente de la cual tomo la información. Ya sea que lo haga por alguna red social o una página en internet, estoy constantemente ampliando mi biblioteca de cintas según recomendaciones ajenas para ver diferentes tipos de películas.
During the last few weeks, I have come across this recommendation in different places. Somewhere they said it was a flawless movie, in another that it was one of the best movies about loneliness, in another that it was one of those movies that we don't appreciate enough. Such was the recurrence of coming across this story that I said to myself "Ok, I have to see it". If you look for the synopsis of First Reformed on the Internet, you will find something like this: "The encounter with an environmental activist and his pregnant wife (Amanda Seyfried) gradually radicalizes the ideology of an evangelical pastor (Ethan Hawke ), a former Army chaplain, still scarred by the death of his son in Iraq, who runs a small church in upstate New York." Filmaffinity. It seems and is a great summary, but it does not reflect all the shocking of the story.
Durante las últimas semanas, me encontré con esta recomendación en distintos lugares. En algún lado decían que era una película sin fallas, en otro que era una de las mejores películas sobre la soledad, en otra que era una de esas películas que no apreciamos lo suficiente. Fue tal la recurrencia de toparme con esta historia que me dije "Ok, tengo que verla". Si buscan la sinopsis de First Reformed en inernet, encontrarán algo como esto: "El encuentro con un activista medioambiental y su esposa embarazada (Amanda Seyfried) radicaliza poco a poco la ideología de un pastor evangélico (Ethan Hawke), un antiguo capellán del ejército, todavía marcado por la muerte de su hijo en Irak, que dirige una pequeña iglesia en el norte del estado de Nueva York." Filmaffinity Parece y es un estupendo resumen, pero no refleja de todo lo impactante de la historia.
At the beginning we see Reverend Toller (Hawke) make the decision to keep a journal for a year. Despite being a man consecrated to religious life for years, we realize that he carries with him a heavy burden, that he carries a painful past that is reflected in his taciturn face. I don't like it very much when a film uses too much interior monologues with the protagonist's voice-over, a resource that abounds in this story, but I think there was no other way to better express the concerns and questions that are emerging in Toller's mind especially after his encounter with Michael.
Al inicio vemos al Reverendo Toller (Hawke) tomar la decisión de llevar un diario durante un año. A pesar de ser un hombre consagrado a la vida religiosa desde hace años, nos damos cuenta de que lleva consigo una pesada carga, que arrastra un doloroso pasado que se refleja en su rostro taciturno. No me gusta mucho cuando una película utiliza demasiado los monólogos interiores con la voz en off del protagonista, recurso que abunda en esta historia, pero creo que no había otra manera de expresar mejor las inquietudes y los cuestionamientos que van aflorando en la mente de Toller, en especial después de su encuentro con Michael.
At the request of Mary (she's concerned), one of her parishioners, Toller goes to speak with her husband, Michael, an environmental activist who has previously been imprisoned for participating in protests defending environmental causes. Although the film tells the story of Toller and the imminent 250th Reconsecration of his church, it's this encounter with Michael that determines the rest of the story. Michael is a being who has fallen into despair, a product of what humanity has done to the planet. Global warming, pollution, the indiscriminate use of natural resources, the abuse of such a beautiful land, has left him upset and he has an answering argument for every advice that the Reverend gives him. Towards the end of the meeting, Michael asks the priest: Will God forgive us? Will he forgive us for what we've done with his creation?
Por petición de Mary (está preocupada), una de sus feligreses, Toller va a hablar con el esposo de ella, Michael, un activista ambiental que ha estado preso previamente por participar en protestas defendiendo causas ecologistas. Aunque la película cuenta la historia de Toller y la inminente 250° Reconsagración de su iglesia, es este encuentro con Michael el hecho que condiciona el resto de la historia. Michael es un ser que ha caído en la desesperación, producto de lo que la humanidad he hecho con el planeta. El calentamiento lobal, la contaminación, el uso indiscrimnado de los recursos naturales, el abuso de una tierra tan hermosa, lo ha dejado trastocado y tiene un argumento de respuesta para cada consejo que le da el Reverendo. Hacia el final del encuentro, Michael le pregunta al religioso: ¿nos perdonará Dios? ¿nos perdonará por lo que hemos hecho con su creación?
The question goes deep into Toller who, within his reflections, assures that "Every act of preservation is an act of creation". The way in which the human being participates in divine creation is by preserving it. That being the case, would it not be a major sin to destroy nature and lead the planet to an environmental catastrophe? Should the church speak out in favor of the preservation of the planet? Should they do more? Regardless of whether or not we are believers, these are interesting questions and the ethical dilemma is worthy of reflection. The story continues and Reverend Toller, amid bureaucratic red tape and political implications related to the upcoming celebration of his church and medical visits to assess his deteriorating health, continues to question himself about his faith, loneliness, pain, the fate of the man and the responsibility of each and everyone with the planet.
La pregunta cala hondo en Toller quien, dentro de sus reflexiones, asegura que "Cada acto de preservación es un acto de creación". La forma en que el ser humano participa de la creación divina es preservándola. Siendo así, destruir la naturaleza y conducir al planeta a una catástrofe ambiental ¿no sería un pecado mayúsuclo? ¿debe la iglesia pronunciarse a favor de la preservación del planeta? ¿debe hacer más? Indiferentemente de si somos, o no, creyentes, son preguntas interesantes y el dilema ético es digno de reflexión. La historia continúa y el Reverendo Toller, en medio de trámites burocráticos e implicaciones políticas relacionadas con la próxima celebración de su iglesia y de visitas médicas para evaluar su deteriorada salud, se sigue cuestionando sobre su fe, la soledad, el dolor, el destino del hombre y la responsabilidad de cada uno y de todos con el planeta.
With great acting, an Academy Award-nominated screenplay, excellent direction, and exquisite photography from start to finish, I consider First Reformed a movie worth watching, both for aesthetic as well as the questions it raises, will God forgive us? What do you think? I read you in the comments.
