I was recently able to watch this movie that I have been very hyped about for quite a while. I saw the first part when it was released a couple of years ago, and I only decided to watch it because the main actress, Emily Blunt, usually works in great films. I thought the premise looked cool and was surprised by the fact the film was intense from beginning to end. I have been waiting for the second part since then, especially due to the cliffhanger type of ending it had.

Main names associated with the film

John Krasinski is a very popular actor who has worked in tons of films and I am sure the majority of the people who watch this film have seen him before. This time, however, he worked as an actor, as a director, and as a writer, it is fair to say he is the main responsible for these movies' success. He plays the husband of Emily Blunt's character. Some of his previous productions as an actor are Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and 13 Hours. As a director, this guy doesn't have much experience, he has directed 4 films in total, including A Quiet Place 1 & 2 which are his most important productions so far, and 3 episodes of the series The Office. Something similar could be said about his experience as a writer, he has only written 5 productions so far and 2 of those are A Quiet Place 1 & 2, the other important production where he worked as a writer was Promised Land, which was a cool drama with Matt Damon playing the main role.

The film has 2 more writers, one of them is Scott Beck, who is experienced and has worked several times in horror productions such as Haunt and 50 States of Fright. The A Quiet Place movies are the most important productions for him so far. He has a written partner, Bryan Woods, and they usually work together in the same films so their experience is pretty much the same.

When it comes to the cast, we have Emily Blunt playing the main character. Her character is a wife, and mother of several kids. This is a really cool actress and some of her best previous works are in The Girl on the Train, Sicario, and Edge of Tomorrow. When you see this actress participating in a film that means the film is probably good.

A Quiet Place 2 introduces 2 new important characters played by well-known actors. One of them is Djimon Hounsou, who has previously worked in popular films such as Aquaman, Charlie's Angels, Furious 7, and many others. I am sure most people have seen him in films more than 1 time. The other popular actor is Cillian Murphy, the main face of the great crime series Peaky Blinders. He has worked in other good productions in the past, such as Anthropoid, Inception, and In the Heart of the Sea.

I would also like to mention the actress Millicent Simmonds, she is quite young and her career is just starting but her performance in both films playing a deaf kid is really worth mentioning. Besides these 2 films, there is another important production where she played one of the main roles called Wonderstruck.

The cast of this film is really talented and the lack of experience in the director wasn't noticeable. For the writers, director, and even for some members of the cast, A Quiet Place 1 & 2 is their best work so far in their careers.

What was the movie about?

More than just the second part I would like to talk about the story in both films. The films are named like that because humanity is going through some extremely troubling circumstances that could be considered a potential extinction event. The first film begins and our civilization is already destroyed and collapsed due to the sudden presence of some type of monsters that love to kill everything making noise.

These monsters have a really precise hearing, they are super fast and almost indestructible. They have killed the majority of the humans, and the remaining ones are living with the constant fear of being hunted down by these creatures. That is why everyone is as silent as possible.

The films are about the Abbot family. We have the husband, the wife, and the kids. Conveniently, one of the kids, as mentioned a couple of paragraphs above, is deaf. So the family is used to use sign language to communicate with each other. This is obviously extremely useful in order to communicate between them without alerting the nearby creatures.

The complete origin of these creatures is never explicitly informed, it is only briefly shown in the second film but without a complete explanation, and the specifics about how the collapse came to be are never shown. The second film shows some scenes where we can see the family before the apocalypse began and then some cool scenes that reminded me of how the chaos started in the movie War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, but no complete picture is ever shown. I always like knowing the origins of important changes in circumstances and given the fact this apocalypse appears to be global, I would have preferred for the films to provide more background info. This is necessary to know especially after a key piece of info about the monsters is revealed in the second film. In War of the Worlds, we eventually discover the origin of those machines but in a Quiet Place, the complete origin of the monsters is still unknown.

Something I didn't like is that the plot has some small holes in it. For example, what happened with important countries that aren't connected by land with any other countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand. All of those countries are advanced enough to figure out how to battle the creatures while the countries connected by land endure the apocalypse. The complete collapse of modern civilization seems unlikely after discovering new information presented in the second film. However, we only see the state of America and only a small part of it. The situation in remote countries is never shown. I believe there is a third part in the works, and I hope they provide further explanation about the state of the world and not only of America.

During the first film, there seems to be no hope whatsoever to regain control of our planet and rebuild our civilization. The monsters appear to be invincible and the only thing that humans can do is to hide and try to survive.

Given the fact there is no civilization in place, at least in America, people have a lot of trouble finding the necessary resources to survive. The Abbot family seems like the ideal target for these monsters. Their younger child in the first film is just a 4-year-old kid, and later on, the wife will give birth to a baby. It seems like surviving under the current circumstance seems impossible for them because there will inevitably be a lot of noise that will alert the monsters. Miraculously, this family will make a discovery that can give them as well as humanity, a chance of fighting off these monsters and maybe even killing them all.

The second film was just as intense as the first one and leaves everything in place for a major rebellion against the monsters, that is if enough humans are still alive. I expect the third film to be more focused on the action and less on the suspense. And I also expect it to show more of a global picture and not only events related to the Abbot family. It seems like they completed their role in this story, and now a more broad action-based plot could be developed.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

The performance was amazing. The facial expressions, the way they acted during intense scenes, everything was just perfect. Even the kids' actors did a good job in their roles. Something I would also like to mention is the monsters' design. These can be really scary creatures and it can be a bit shocking seeing humans being so easily hunted by them.

I enjoyed the settings and how the film shows the way humans are living under the current circumstances. People now live isolated lives with constant distrust towards anyone else. The camera work is also nice, there are some scenes where a monster is revealed by surprise, and doing that can quickly increase the tension in the viewer.

Final thoughts

I think this type of apocalypse gives room for potential spinoffs showing how these events were dealt with in other parts of the world, and how some strategies to deal with these monsters failed. I think that a potential strategy could be to use some helicopters or planes and flying them around high enough so the monsters cannot reach them by jumping, and with the sound of these machines, it would be harder for the monster to locates humans on the ground and kill them. This would be only a temporary strategy but one that could make it possible to move a large number of people without the monsters killing them.

I don't think any spinoff will be produced but it can be fun to think about these possibilities. Another obvious spinoff would be how the population of remote islands reacted and what they did to help.

Anyways, the film is very enjoyable and if you like movies about apocalyptic events and murderous monsters, make sure to check these ones out. They are among the best ones you can find.

I hope the third film completes this story in a successful way. After seeing the first 2 films it is easy to imagine how humanity will fight back, so unless there is a major surprise, what I am expecting the most is just for the final film to provide a more global picture with a proper background.

The Best
Lo Mejor

  • Very intense and entertaining plot.
  • The best monster movie I have seen in a good while.

The Worst
Lo Peor

  • Not enough background information and no global picture.
  • An injustifiable stupid decision is taken by an important character when he should have been resting, and this complicates things.

I enjoyed reading your review and critic. I will have to watch this movie. It reminds me of a book I read, The Circle by Ted Dekker.

Emily blunt, I love her movies because she brings everything to the table. So on my way to watch these movies.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the movie.

I agree, Emily Blunt is a terrific actress and her presence pretty much guarantees a production of good quality. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I like your point about Emily Blunt. I absolutely loved her performance in the Jungle Cruise I've just watched. Then, I would like to speculate on some of your points, but before that - I haven't seen the film. I saw something else with the same premise, but the creatures were vulnerable to cold, so there was a refugee in the sub-arctic regions.

First, why the sea-separated nations don't do anything - from your lines, my guess would be, that #1 the creatures are unreasonable strong and #2 everything collapsed so fast that Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and others haven't had the time to develop any weapons. They might struggle with their own population as all the supply chains are disrupted, so is the people's way of life. What political consequences might that have on one's country? #3 The filmmakers in America sometimes forget that there is a world outside America. If it started in America and the creature can't be contained & put into a cage, even Euroasie should be fine, right? #4 Provided that Europe and Asia have, for some reason, also fallen even though they are not connected to America by land, the rest of civilization might choose to starve this creature. If they breed so fast they caused a collapse of both Americas and Eurasia, this sounds like a sound strategy. Especially if every source of food is thought to be completely wiped out on these continents.

The second, the choice of weapons. #1 I think if the creature hunts by sound, it should very vulnerable to sonic weapons. Some frequency could kill them the same way the whales can kill us and that's only 120-150 decibels. Something louder than that, running at the right frequency, should do fine which takes me back to 1.1, the creatures are probably unreasonable strong. #2 Another cool weapon type any advanced country has at its disposal now are suicide drones. They are designed to be silent & travel hostile territory undetected. Producing the loud versions would be cheaper and it sounds like a weapon perfectly fitted to fight these creatures.

Anyway, I think a lot of these post-apocalyptic movies have too many problems to take care of, so they just ditch some of them. Or in other words, how dare you suggest there should be something, that an advanced society that has had nukes at its disposal for decades, could do! And that's another interesting plothole right there. What happened to all the weapons of mass destruction? Dead-hand of Moscow would surely be activated by an event of this magnitude, wouldn't it?

This movie seems to be quite popular, but I still fail to see why. If you like post-apocalyptic shows, I came across Tribes of Europa not so long ago. Their world is a lot more believable and it's quite good for a German sci-fi series.

I will be watching that movie soon, it is on my to-watch list and it appears most people liked it.

the creatures are unreasonable strong and #2 everything collapsed so fast that Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and others haven't had the time to develop any weapons

They should try to kidnap one of these creatures to experiment on it. They certainly have the resources to do that.

They might struggle with their own population as all the supply chains are disrupted

This could certainly be the case and that brings the potential for some spin-off or something similar showing how those countries collapsed. Nevertheless, I believe most countries must have some type of reserve that allow them to run for several weeks or months.

If it started in America and the creature can't be contained & put into a cage, even Euroasie should be fine, right?

Explaining this would be a spoiler but islands are the places where things should be fine and safe. Europe and every big continent is probably destroyed too.

What you mention about weapons, the safe island countries could very well do that and weaponize the sound. But nope, the only case of sound being weaponized is by one of the main characters and it happens by chance.

All of this is certainly a plot hole but again, this could be solved if they decide to produce spin-offs to show what happened in other places but who knows what the producers decide to do with this apocalyptic world.

I have read about the series Tribes of Europa but haven't watched that show yet, I might do it in the future. This movie is simply a well-done action film packed with a few intense scenes with the monsters.

. They might struggle with their own population as all the supply chains are disrupted, so is the people's way of life. What political consequences might that have on one's country?

There is a cool French series where civilization collapses called L'Effondrement, it has no scifi or fantasy it is mainly realistic drama and it kind of explores that question you asked there. You might enjoy it but the reasons for the collapse aren't completely explained it only shows events that happen during the collapse. Very entertaining.

Nevertheless, I believe most countries must have some type of reserve that allows them to run for several weeks or months.

Try 15 days at most. Countries with higher canned food consumption might have a little more and islands can still go fishing. But the world's food reserve is far smaller than most people think.

And they may not necessarily collapse, but strict rations and other necessary measures would be hard to implement.

What you mention about weapons, the safe island countries could very well do that and weaponize the sound.

Something I haven't mentioned earlier - I think only Japan has highly sophisticated weapon manufacturers (from Islands). I can't imagine Iceland or Hawaii developing any kind of arms.

There is a cool French series where civilization collapses called L'Effondrement, it has no scifi or fantasy...

I am grateful for your suggestion. It looks decent and I wouldn't find it without you. I rarely watch non-scifi non-fantasy stuff, so it doesn't appear in the recommended for me.

You might enjoy it but the reasons for the collapse aren't completely explained.

The collapse wouldn't be that different based on the reason, would it? I strongly doubt that. Anyway, my bet would be one of these: monetary system, cultural tensions, solar storm, or food crisis.

Tough day at the supermarket for this young clerk who tries to keep calm and do his job seriously while many products are out of stock and public paranoia rises.

That's the description of the first episode of L'Effondrement. Sounds a lot like an economical disruption. I can imagine a few things that could do that.

It looks decent...

Yeah, it is almost like an anthology because each episode shows different characters experiencing the collapse in different manners although a few characters appear in more than 1 episode. For me, it was very realistic and some parts were intense. It was a unique and enjoyable show for sure.

The collapse wouldn't be that different based on the reason, would it?

It would be the same but I would still have preferred some info about the reasons behind it.

I rarely watch non-scifi non-fantasy stuff

Have you checked out an Apple TV series named "Calls"? It was one of the most unique productions I have seen this year and it shows a very different type of apocalypse in a very special way. It has suspenseful scifi even though all we see on the screen are animated waves representing the emotions of the people talking during the calls. It was cool.

I've checked Calls on IMDb just now. It looks like a show for some artificial intelligence, not for me. But I know someone who might love this uncommon format.

Nope, it isn't about AI. It is about events that might seem paranormal but have an apocalyptic scifi background unrelated to AI. Just in case, this is the imdb page https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9327706/ and trailer

:P

Hola...
