The anime series that hooked me up was a little-known suspense show called Another. It surprised me how this genre could create really suspenseful moments because I have never watched in my life a suspenseful story using animation, only in live-action movies or series. However, now I can say with confidence that anime can evoke the same intensity and feelings as any live-action production. Maybe the only exception could be pure horror, I haven't seen pure horror in any anime. I watched a series some time ago called When They Cry, that had some shocking horrific moments but I don't think that one belonged to the horror genre, and it had much more silliness than needed.
After Another, I watched several other great anime series. Parasyte was amazing, with excellent dialogues, action scenes, touching moments, and an unforgettable soundtrack song you can hear here. Another cool series I watched was Serial Experiments Lain, this was a mystery series and every fan of the Matrix trilogy should check this one out. Attack on Titans is deservedly considered as one of the best anime of all time and I loved it as well, so many epic moments in this one.
Before watching Cowboy Bebop, I was expecting it to become one of my favorite ones, the premise and settings looked like something I could really enjoy and it is fair to say I was quite hyped about watching this one. Sadly, for reasons I will explain below, this is the anime series I have enjoyed the least. But before talking about that, I would like to briefly mention some of the main names associated with this series.
Main names associated with the series
The series has 26 episodes and the number of people who worked in it is incredibly large. Therefore, I will only mention the only director that worked in all 26 episodes, and only the writers that also worked in all 26 episodes.
The director is Shin'ichirô Watanabe, this is a guy with extensive experience directing animated films, and he even directed 1 of the stories from the Animatrix anthology film, the one called A Detective Story. That film was a great experience and it provides more information about the intriguing world of the Matrix trilogy. He also directed the Cowboy Bebop movie, which I plan to watch one of these days. His last work as a director was in 2019 where he worked in the series Carole & Tuesday.
When it comes to the writers, there are 2 of them that participated in all of the original episodes. The creator of the show is Hajime Yatate. This person has a lot of experience working as a writer, he started in the late 70s and he has worked in more than 100 productions since then. It is fair to say this person is highly creative. However, the great majority of his work isn't very common and Cowboy Bebop is the first story I watch created by this person.
Keiko Nobumoto is the other writer, this person has been working since the 90s and has participated in over 20 projects until now. I have only seen 2 stories created by her, one of them is obviously Cowboy Bebop and the other one is the film Tokyo Godfathers, which also left me feeling a bit disappointed. I guess this person creates a type of anime I don't really enjoy so much.
La serie de anime que me enganchó fue una de suspenso poco conocida llamada Another. Me sorprendió cómo este género podía crear momentos realmente de suspenso porque nunca en mi vida había visto una historia de suspenso usando animación, solo en películas o series de acción con actores reales. Sin embargo, ahora puedo decir con confianza que el anime puede evocar la misma intensidad y sentimientos que cualquier producción de acción real. Quizás la única excepción podría ser el horror puro, no he visto horror puro en ningún anime. Hace algún tiempo vi una serie llamada When They Cry, que tuvo algunos momentos espantosos e impactantes, pero no creo que esta perteneciera al género de terror, y tenía muchas más tonterías de las necesarias.
After Another, vi varias otras grandes series de anime. Parasyte fue increíble, con excelentes diálogos, escenas de acción, momentos conmovedores y una canción inolvidable que puedes escuchar aquí. Otra serie genial que vi fue Serial Experiments Lain, esta fue una serie de misterio y todos los fanáticos de la trilogía Matrix deberían verla. Attack on Titans se considera merecidamente como uno de los mejores animes de todos los tiempos y también me encantó, tiene muchos momentos épicos.
Antes de ver Cowboy Bebop, esperaba que se convirtiera en una de mis favoritas, la premisa y la ambientación parecían algo que realmente podría disfrutar y es justo decir que estaba bastante entusiasmado con ver esta serie. Lamentablemente, por razones que explicaré a continuación, esta es la serie de anime que menos he disfrutado. Pero antes de hablar de eso, me gustaría mencionar brevemente algunos de los nombres principales asociados con esta serie.

What was the series about?
Cowboy Bebop is about the life of the bounty hunters group in the future, where humanity has developed technology that allows us to easily travel through space and visit other planets. What these bounty hunters do, is simply hunt down criminals and deliver them to justice, just like in the wild west, where there were notices about wanted criminals, and anyone could hunt them down.
In this case, these notices are delivered using a computer, and then any bounty hunter can just look for the criminal and catch him. Sometimes the series was a bit funny because some of the criminals were very easy to catch, and if the police are looking for them this should mean they are very talented criminals with a lot of resources to protect themselves, but for these bounty hunters it was easy peasy most of the time.
The series begins with only 2 characters in the spaceship, and later on, there will be a woman joining them and then a talented hacker kid. This character, the kid, was extremely annoying. I don't know why but the creators of this show made this character super silly, always saying nonsense and acting in a very strange way. The series would have been much better if this character was written differently.
Each episode has a story different than the one from the previous episodes. It almost felt like an anthology series but with the same characters. There is no continuity between episodes whatsoever. They are in chronological order, but the plots are independent for the most part. Each episode shows one different mission project for the bounty hunters, and only a handful of episodes provide new information about one important background story.
What I enjoyed the most about the series was the creativity in some of the enemies they encounter and that they need to hunt down. The series is futuristic so this gave them a lot of room to create very unique villains. One of my favorite ones was a character that appeared to be a small kid but was really possessing the mind of not only an adult man but a very ancient one. They will also need to battle against important terrorists that want to destroy humanity with an eco-terrorist attack.
Evil hackers, drug dealers, assassin groups, debt collectors, corruption, all of that is present during the 26 episodes the series lasts. My favorite episode was with a villain named Mad Pierrot that appeared to be a supernatural being. The third screenshot of my post shows that villain and the settings for the final battle of that episode in a very creepy amusement park that could give chills to normal people.

Cowboy Bebop trata sobre la vida del grupo de cazarrecompensas en el futuro, donde la humanidad ha desarrollado tecnología que nos permite viajar fácilmente por el espacio y visitar otros planetas. Lo que hacen estos cazarrecompensas es simplemente cazar criminales y entregarlos ante la justicia, al igual que en el salvaje oeste, donde había avisos sobre criminales buscados y cualquiera podía cazarlos.
En este caso, estos avisos se envían mediante una computadora, y luego cualquier cazarrecompensas puede simplemente buscar al criminal y atraparlo. A veces la serie era un poco graciosa porque algunos de los criminales eran muy fáciles de atrapar, y si la policía los está buscando, esto debería significar que son criminales muy talentosos con muchos recursos para protegerse, pero para estos cazarrecompensas era trabajo fácil la mayor parte del tiempo.
La serie comienza con solo 2 personajes en la nave espacial, y más adelante, habrá una mujer uniéndose a ellos y luego una talentosa niña hacker. Este personaje, la niña, fue extremadamente molesto. No sé por qué, pero los creadores de este programa hicieron que este personaje fuera súper tonto, siempre diciendo tonterías y actuando de una manera muy extraña. La serie hubiera sido mucho mejor si este personaje estuviera escrito de manera diferente.
Cada episodio tiene una historia diferente a la de los episodios anteriores. Casi parecía una serie de antología pero con los mismos personajes. No hay continuidad entre episodios en absoluto. Están en orden cronológico, pero las tramas son independientes en su mayor parte. Cada episodio muestra un proyecto o misión diferente para los cazarrecompensas, y solo un puñado de episodios proporciona nueva información sobre una historia de fondo importante.
Lo que más disfruté de la serie fue la creatividad en algunos de los enemigos que encuentran y que necesitan cazar. La serie es futurista, por lo que les dio mucho espacio para crear villanos únicos. Uno de mis favoritos era un personaje que parecía ser un niño pequeño pero que en realidad poseía la mente no solo de un hombre adulto sino de uno muy antiguo. También necesitarán luchar contra importantes terroristas que quieren destruir a la humanidad con un ataque eco-terrorista.
Hackers malvados, narcotraficantes, grupos asesinos, cobradores de deudas, corrupción, todo eso está presente durante los 26 episodios que dura la serie. Mi episodio favorito fue con un villano llamado Mad Pierrot que parecía ser un ser sobrenatural. La tercera captura de pantalla de mi publicación muestra a ese villano y la ambientación de la batalla final de ese episodio en un parque de diversiones muy espeluznante que podría dar escalofríos a la gente normal.

The series had good potential to become a really great show, but it required better dialogues and a more integrated storyline. The fact most episodes could hardly relate to one another or build upon each other storylines was strange. This is the first time I see a series that isn't like an anthology being written almost as if it was an anthology. On the other hand, the fact these people could easily beat the majority of the criminals felt a bit exaggerated.
The series could have been much better, and in the end, I was kind of disappointed by it. I still plan to watch the movie but this is in no way as good of a show as the ones I mentioned at the beginning of the post.
How was the quality of the animation and the writting?
The animation was very good, especially taking into account this show is from the 90s. I like the creativity in designing a bunch of gadgets, characters, different places, all of that was great. The problem was with the writing of the show. The writing determines the personality of the characters, and they damaged the show by making the kid character all annoying and silly.
The number of different stories the series explored was good, but I would have preferred to have a show with somehow linked stories, instead of something resembling an anthology.
Final thoughts
Cowboy Bebop wasn't what I expected, maybe my expectations were too high after having seen so many great anime series and films. I wouldn't recommend this show to scifi fans nor to people looking for a serious anime production. It has the same type of silly moments present in the series When They Cry, but that one at least had a bit of suspense and horror to compensate for that, this one only had action scenes and it didn't feel enough.
The good thing is that there is a live-action remake in the works, and maybe that series could be serious enough to really enjoy. Sadly, I can't recommend this show, maybe only to kids that could certainly tolerate the silly moments this series has. But for adult audiences, this series has little to offer.
La serie tenía un buen potencial para convertirse en un gran show, pero requería mejores diálogos y una historia más integrada. Era extraño el hecho de que la mayoría de los episodios apenas pudieran relacionarse entre sí o basarse en las historias de otros. Esta es la primera vez que veo que se escribe una serie que no es una antología, casi como si fuera una antología. Por otra parte, el hecho de que estas personas pudieran vencer fácilmente a la mayoría de los criminales se sintió un poco exagerado.
La serie podría haber sido mucho mejor y, al final, me decepcionó un poco. Todavía planeo ver la película, pero este no es un show tan bueno como los que mencioné al principio del post.
¿Cómo fue la calidad de la animación y la escritura?
La animación fue muy buena, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que este show es de los años 90. Me gusta la creatividad al diseñar un montón de artilugios, personajes, diferentes lugares, todo eso fue genial. El problema estaba en la redacción. La escritura determina la personalidad de los personajes, y dañaron el programa al hacer que el personaje infantil fuera molesto y tonto.
La cantidad de historias diferentes que exploró la serie fue buena, pero hubiera preferido tener un programa con historias vinculadas de alguna manera, en lugar de algo parecido a una antología.
Reflexiones finales
Cowboy Bebop no fue lo que esperaba, tal vez mis expectativas eran demasiado altas después de haber visto tantas grandes series y películas de anime. No recomendaría este programa a los fanáticos de la ciencia ficción ni a las personas que buscan una producción de anime seria. Tiene el mismo tipo de momentos tontos presentes en la serie When They Cry, pero esa al menos tenía un poco de suspenso y horror para compensar, esta solo tenía escenas de acción y no era suficiente.
Lo bueno es que hay un remake de acción en vivo en proceso, y tal vez esa serie podría ser lo suficientemente seria como para disfrutarla de verdad. Lamentablemente, no puedo recomendar este programa, tal vez solo a los niños que ciertamente podrían tolerar los momentos tontos que tiene esta serie. Pero para el público adulto, esta serie tiene poco que ofrecer.

Me gusta muchísimo ver animes, pero sinceramente Cowboy Bebop no lo he visto, a pesar de ser considerado uno de los 10 animes para ver obligatoriamente.

Siempre me he sentido fascinado por cómo Cowboy Bebop Luce -Y su música-, tengo que darle un chance.
La serie tiene algunas cosas buenas, pero honestamente he visto muchos otros animes que son mejores. Este me lo esperaba mejor de lo que fue.
Animes veo muy pocos, pero de este vi algunos episodios porque es como tu dices, de los clásicos del genero. Con las producciones nuevas es que no me he puesto al dia. Esta me gusto lo poco que vi, fueron entretenidos. Quizás le de una mirada a todos los episodios o espero el remake.
Creo que el remake va a ser mejor, porque las cosas que no me gustaron de esta serie no creo que puedan ser trasladas a una producción live action. Yo antes también veía pocos animes pero desde que me puse a verlos, he encontrado a muchos que son buenísimos. No sabía de lo que me perdía al haber ignorado al anime durante tanto tiempo.
