When I was deciding which new film to watch I wasn't sure if this one was worth watching or not, mainly because it looked like the skateboarding world was a big part of the story and that's not something that really interested me. It is not that I don't like skateboards, I do or at least I did in the past. For a time as a kid, I even had my own skateboard although I hardly learned how to do a simple kick flick. It was while playing the Tony Hawk games for PS1 and PS2 that I learn the name of a ton of tricks.

However, I wasn't entirely convinced about this film because I wasn't sure putting too much focus on the skateboarding world would help drive forward a crime-drama plot. As I will explain in the following paragraphs, the film has what could have been a really great story but the way it is told will reduce the enjoyment of most viewers simply because most people don't care about watching guys riding on skateboards.

Paranoid Park isn't the first crime drama I have seen with teens as the main characters. There is an unforgettable one I watched some months ago called Super Dark Times, and despite the young age of its main actors I gotta say the film was awesome with some really sinister surprises.

If it wasn't thanks to this film that proved to me great crime dramas can be produced with teens playing the main roles I would have never decided to watch Paranoid Park. So what I was expecting was a good story with a few twists related to the crime, and hoping for not much focus on the skateboarding world.

What was the movie about?

Paranoid Park follows a teen around 16 years old who loves his skateboard, most of his friends also like to use skateboards and he likes to visit a skateboarding park known as Paranoid Park to watch other people riding their skateboards.

The film isn't in chronological order and sometimes it will go back to previous events to reveal things the viewer hasn't seen yet. It has the same teen as a narrator as if he was telling a story or writing a page for his personal journal.

This guy isn't a bad person in any sense. He is quiet, maybe a bit introverted, and seems to be quite relaxed most of the time. He doesn't have any evil thoughts of any type and spends his free time with his skateboard or with his friends and girlfriend hanging out around the town.

However, throughout the film, it is noticeable that something is bothering him that's causing him to be constantly lost in his thoughts and maybe that's why he seems to be absent instead of being fully involved in the present moment.

The actor does a great job displaying what could be considered as subconscious nervous tics when being questioned by the police about what he saw one night. It turns out, that the night he visited the skateboarding park they call "Paranoid Park", a security guard was found dead near some train rails, so they decide to ask questions to all the guys who are known to use skateboards to see if they can find something useful.

Since the main character is a good kid he isn't a suspect, besides, that park is also frequently visited by guys of dubious reputation and that will be confirmed later in the film. However, the nervous tics when being questioned by the police and his strangely absent behavior that's even commented on by his girlfriend suggest he knows something about what really happened on that night.

The crime had the potential to be a very good story but putting too much focus in the skateboarding world ruined it for me, which is something that worried me since before watching the film. The same plot could have been developed without including anything about the skateboarding world. There are other ways of engineering the same situations using different types of gathering that would produce the same tragic result.

The reason why I didn't like putting too much focus on the skateboarding world was that the film lost almost 10 minutes just showing scenes in slow motion of people riding skateboards and doing simple tricks. I mean, what value does that bring to the viewer? How do slow scenes improve the plot? The film is already short enough lasting around 85 minutes but those moments reduce the time useful to develop the plot and leave it at around 75 minutes or so. It is my theory they added those scenes in slow motion to try to display how the teen was perceiving the world. All slow, soundless, and a little foggy but either way I didn't like it.

I also didn't like the fact the dialogues were of very low quality, with no depth and nothing really interesting in them. The most interesting scenes were either silent ones with just the main character or with him doing some narration because these were the only ones that could provide new information related to what happened that night.

The film ended up being a little boring for me but at least it had an entertaining revelation. It ends unexpectedly but it doesn't leave any open questions waiting to be answered.

Main names associated with the film

This film doesn't have many well-known people involved in it. The director and screenplay writer is Gus Van Sant, who is a guy with a lot of experience. The most popular film he directed was the classic Good Will Hunting which is an awesome movie everyone should watch at least once. In the past decade, he also directed several other productions, among those we can find the films The Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts, and Promised Land with Matt Damon.

When it comes to the cast, all of them were unknown to me, the only one worth mentioning is just the main actor, Gabe Nevins. I believe his career as an actor has failed because he only participated in 7 little-known productions and the last one was in 2015.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

Every character besides the main has very little screen time so they are mostly irrelevant. The mystery involves the main character and only him, no one else. Sometimes it even seems as if the main character is all alone all the time but that's not the case. When it comes to the performance of Gabe Devins, it was regular. His character doesn't show emotions, his dialogue lines don't show intensity, anything. The only thing good he did was the slightly subconscious nervous tic that I was able to notice in the questioning scene with the police. But apart from that, his performance didn't have anything special.

The settings were OK. There are scenes at the park, in the malls, and other places teens frequently visit but again, nothing too special about any of this. The camera work was crappy due to the scenes I mentioned before where around 10 minutes in total were lost only showing people riding skateboards in silence. Even the image quality was worse than normal during those scenes and most viewers won't enjoy them.

Final thoughts

This film didn't meet my expectations, I was hoping to watch a great crime drama but at times it even appeared to be some type of documentary about skateboarding. The good parts of the plot are diluted by putting too much focus on the skateboarding parts and the final result wasn't enjoyable for me.

It was entertaining to watch the scene that reveals everything but that didn't make up for all the bad things in the film. I think this movie can only be enjoyed by people who love the skateboarding world, for those who don't, this film will probably bore them.

Every time I come across your post I say to myself "So many movies to watch yet so little time". Sigh

I always watch something on the TV during the night while eating my dinner, that's how I manage to watch something almost every day :D

Ah nice! I am usually late for dinner after my work and hence I can't do the same . I am so bad at time blocking and I need to work on it.

What I like most about this movie (which is very good) is when it reminds a little bit of one of the phases of my adolescence.

Yes I guess that if you were a skateboarder you have more chances of enjoying this film.
