I have never played the Monster Hunter videogames but I do know it is a very popular franchise. When I decided to watch this film I knew what to expect, constant action and not that many dialogues. In a way, the film delivered what I was expecting, but in some areas it was disappointing.

The story begins with a team of warriors being attacked by a huge monster from underneath their ship. This place doesn't look like Planet Earth but it is quite similar, and it is clear this isn't the first time these humans have fought against monsters. They are well equipped and skilled enough to have a good chance of survival when facing dangerous and huge beasts. Due to this attack, one of the humans gets separated from the group.

Immediately after that, we now see humans looking like regular soldiers on what appears to be our planet Earth. They are looking for missing soldiers in the desert when suddenly, they find themselves facing a weird storm. With no idea about what is happening and what the deal is with this storm, they are now transported into another world. A world inhabited by huge monsters and the humans that fight with them.

There were several things that I didn't enjoy, for example, in the early scene with the normal soldiers I found their acting didn't appear spontaneous enough. Their performance wasn't authentic and it just felt very fake to me. The interaction between the main soldier and the hunter was full of stupid decisions at the beginning. It is clear they both wanted to survive, so their counterproductive attitude in those early scenes was hard to understand. And finally, the plot was almost nonexistent. I knew the movie wasn't going to have a lot of dialogues but I was honestly expecting a little bit more from the story.

The good thing about the film is that it has tons of action scenes full of monsters, some of them original, others not so much. The dragon that appears a the end reminded me of the GOT dragons, in fact, the screenshot below could easily be mistaken for a GOT scene when it is actually a scene from Monster Hunter.

The monsters' CGI was of good quality but not top-notch. It had some fun moments although I am not sure I would be interested in watching a potential second part. I would recommend this film only to those looking for mindless action full of giant monsters. If you are looking for a good plot to follow, you should ignore this movie.

The best

  • Good monsters and action scenes.

The worst

  • Unauthentic performances from several characters.
  • The plot was almost nonexistent.
