Looking Back on ADV Films Work: Dirty Pair: Project Eden – This Movie Defies Critical Thought

So this is one of those anime ADV licensed that was previously licensed and released in 1992. ADV, as they did during this time, re-dubbed it once they got a hold of the license, and that is the version of this movie I watched. That said.... how do I even go about reviewing this thing?

Here is a summation of what is going on in the plot. The pair are on a mission to find out what is going on with these monsters attacking these factories, which have some sort of secret refining process they are experimenting with to best make use of a natural energy resource. The fact secret research is going in isn't important. The villain of the show is obsessed with reviving a long-dead race whose DNA is in said material and unnaturally evolving them to become the universe's successor to humans, the reasons for this are never explained and frankly, he's just crazy and wrong about everything. There is another 'hero' that gets involved for some really silly reason that has nothing to do with the actual plot and potential end of the planet this is taking place on, and his name is Carson D. Carson. And, without spoiling anything, by the movies end nobody has won except the guy who has the least relevance to the actual villain's plans.

Some parts of this movie I can't even review like it's a movie, because the entire climax is happening during an 80's hair ballad. Don't get me wrong, despite the characters not saying anything we can hear everyone is very expressive and you can follow what's going on, but I'd have to review this thing like a music video. I don't know how to do that. That is this entire movie, it's an over-the-top 80's Sci-Fi Action movie with over-the-top anime action, a lot of much-appreciated fan service, and absolutely no regard for making sure anything that happens in this movie means anything. I won't spoil the last thirty seconds of this show, but in the end, absolutely nothing you learned about anything even matters to the result. Frankly, the world is probably worse off as a result of the Dirty Pair even being here, to begin with, and even the overall reduction in the quality of the world just doesn't seem to matter.

And I love this movie for it. It comes in knowing exactly what it wants to be and brazenly does not care about anything going on outside that little bubble. Do want something that doesn't somehow involve copious ass shots? Well too bad, because that horde of terrifying resurrected alien fossils now has boobs and butt. Why do you ask? Even the actual explanation in this show barely makes any sense, just roll with it.

Like... what do you want me to say here? Everything about this movie feels like the writers and animators just wanted to have as much fun as they possibly could, and it shows in every frame. The action is intense, the characters are over the top, and the show is just unabashedly ridiculous. I knew nothing about Dirty Pair going into this movie, but I never felt like I was missing any relevant info. The movie is worth the watch.

90s Anime was very free and experimental, this was before the Corpos got their metrics on what works and what doesnt and try to push everything to that single model to maximize profit. Unfortunately just like music, everyone is too scared to try something new. Only the ones with enough clout can start investing in the future, otherwise good luck getting any sort of funds for your project.
