My Top Ten movies of the Horror Genre.

in Movies & TV Shows3 years ago (edited)

My first experience with the horror genre was with The Exorcist, I remember that the whole family talked about it, that they could not sleep, that it was horrible, that there were fainting in theaters, my curiosity as a child led me to ask my mother to take me to the movies, but I was not old enough.

When the Betamax came out I finally got to see the movie and it impressed me from the very first moment. It was a terrifying but at the same time unique experience that would mark in me the taste for this genre.

I like the horror genre, I get into the skin of the character, I experience their situation, in my head spin ideas of how it should be the end, I love to look for a rational explanation to the events that happen,

I like to know why that person acts that way, or what is the fact that happened to appear ghosts, in my experience few films manage to generate astonishment, fear, emotion or leave you thinking for days.

People who love horror also get scared.

I watch horror movies at any time but never before I go to sleep, typical if the movie is really good, you imagine that supernatural being near your bed, stalking you, you have to turn on the light.

The horror genre is linked to the fantastic, to science fiction, to the sinister, to the dark, to the supernatural, is to try to understand everything that the human mind is not able to comprehend.

In my list there are more than 80 favorite horror movies.

My Top Ten Horror Movies :

The Exorcist (1973)

My first encounter with horror, I remember the fear, the sleepless nights wondering if the devil existed or if it could happen to me, since I was still a little girl like Linda Blair, however the curiosity to know if evil existed was stronger than me, and awakened my passion for this genre.

The film is about the diabolical possession of Regan MacNeil Directed by William Friedkin Winner of 2 Oscars in 1974.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Wakes up every 23 years just to eat, it feeds on human parts who it detects by its smell.... only with this sentence you know you have to see the movie, I liked the concept, the staging and the evil one with a priest past and who broke his pact with the devil.

Written and Directed by Victor Salva - Trish and Darry, two college brothers, travel by road to visit their parents. On the way they tune in to a song that announces the presence of a terrifying creature.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

This film is a cult film, I am a Nurse and I have worked with Psychiatric patients, seeing Anthony Hopkins transformation on screen scared me, his eyes manage to capture the same look of a Psychopath, it is a brilliant performance that combines perfectly with the fragility of Jodie Foster and the sadistic Buffalo Bill obsessed with being a woman starves women to tear off their skin.

Winner of 5 Oscars, Directed by Jonathan Demme - An FBI agent-in-training seeks the help and advice of a brilliant killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, in order to catch another killer.

Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)

This movie scared me, I saw the boy next to my bed, it was one of my first experience with Japanese cinema and the scares with the long hair formula they often use. It is a very well told mysterious story that grabs you from the first moment. It is said in Japan that when someone dies in extreme grief or anger, the emotion remains and can leave a stain on that place, killing everything it touches.

Written and Directed by Takashi Shimizu, it is based on a legend about a typical Japanese haunted house.

Eden Lake (2008)

Not your typical teen movie, these are evil from the first moment you hate them, they mercilessly hunt down this couple with brutal sadism and a surprisingly familiar ending. Violence begets violence.

Written and Directed by James Watkins - During a romantic weekend, a couple must confront a gang, but the consequences will be terrible.

The Others (2001)

I have seen this movie several times, the plot presents that duality between the living and the dead, Nicole Kidman's performance as Grace is brilliant, a lonely, desperate mother who has strict rules that must be followed if you enter her house.

Directed by Alejandro Amenábar - A grieving widow discovers strange occurrences, which point to the presence of ghosts in her secluded mansion.

I saw the devil (2010)

It is an unsettling, shattering film that puts in front of you the worst demon we carry inside when human beings strip themselves of any belief or ethical code. I liked the interpretation of the protagonists, on the one hand the cold and calculating psychopath and on the other hand the policeman who swears revenge for the crime of his girlfriend.

Directed by Kim Jee-woon - The line between good and evil begins to disappear when an agent begins to pursue the serial killer who brutally murdered his pregnant fiancée.

Confessions (2010)

A masterpiece in the genre, raw as only the Japanese can do it, the last day of classes the teacher Moriguchi confesses to his students that the 02 murderers of her daughter are in the classroom and as revenge decided to contaminate with VIH milk cartons that just drink .... So begins this story that tells step by step what happened. The ending is as surprising as the beginning.

Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima - A grieving mother becomes a cold-blooded avenger to punish the people responsible for her daughter's death.

Let Me In (2010)

It is a disturbing and exciting hidden gem, it deals with themes such as bullying, loneliness and sexual awakening of adolescence, it is not a simple vampire story goes beyond, here horror, tenderness and violence are on the same plane.

Directed by Matt Reeves - Owen is a boy abused by his classmates and abandoned by his divorced parents. However, his lonely life will change when he meets his new neighbor Abby.

Sinister (2012)

It is a terrifying movie, because of the events that happened in the house and that are recorded on tapes, I liked that the story develops logically, the images that appear are the gateway to the kingdom of "Bughuul", the evil entity, the end shows us that for the writer to find fame was always more important.

Directed by Scott Derrickson- Narrates the experiences of writer Ellison Oswalt when he discovers a box of home videos that puts his family in danger.

SPECIAL MENTION:

La casa del fin de los tiempos.

The House at the End of Time is a Venezuelan thriller with horror features, debut feature by Alejandro Hidalgo.

Thirty years after the disappearance of her son in the basement of her house, for which she spent 30 years in jail for a crime she did not commit, Dulce returns to the scene with a priest to unveil the mysterious events taking place in the old colonial house and prove her innocence.

Choosing 10 movies among so many favorites was difficult, I will only name a few to complement my favorites.

A Quiet Place (2018) - REC (2007) - The Witch (2015) - The Sixth Sense (1999)- Grave Encounters (2011) - I See You(2019) - Mama (2013) - Case 39 (2009) - Night of the living dead (1968) - The Conjuring (2013) - The Blair Witch Project (1999) - Skate land (2010) - Misery (1990) - The Strangers (2008) - Friday the 13th (1980) - Insidious (2010) - The Ring (1998) -The Descent (2005)- Saw (2004) - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - The Birds) (1963) - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - Halloween (1978) - Silent Hill (2006) - The last House on the Left(2009), - Musarañas (2014) - Que Dios nos perdone (2016) - Mientras duermes (2011) - The Visit (2015) , - The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) - Holocausto caníbal (1980) - Paranormal Activity (2009) - I See You(2019) - Bedevilled(2010) - Shutter (2004) - The collector (2009) - Martyrs (2008) - Cloverfield (2008) - recientemente Saint Maud (2019)

In recent years the Horror Cinema has experienced a fall, films are made with the typical scares, the same legends, or by box office receipts from my point of view we are facing a vacuum in the genre, every year there are few jewels, but you have to look very well and with a magnifying glass.

Hi, I have not seen Midsomar is a movie that I have pending, with Hereditary something happened to me, I did not feel terror, nor suspense, the only scene that impacted me was the girl's scene and it is not because of the protagonist she does an excellent job.

That depends on the director, I love to get into the movie and let my mind fly.

Thank you very much.

WOW The Grudge is my favorite.
But I see some great movies on your list and some really good movies I didn't remember like the Blair Witch Project, Mama and Cannibal Holocaust I remember that's the one I saw on VHS I always watched old movies. I would like to see The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).
Greetings...

Hi, I saw Cannibal Holocaust on VHS or Betamax, I don't remember, I wasn't old enough but I was curious.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a classic.

Thanks for your comment.

No, I definitely can't be a horror movie lover, my nerves wouldn't let me. I would suffer a heart attack, so when I'm invited to a horror movie I say "are you willing to shake my hand", but I'm not responsible if I break it.

Hi it's that fear, that feeling when you are part of the movie that I love.

When a director is able to give you that show with incredible actors that is additive.

If the movie is very scary I watch it during the day, never at night and even less before going to sleep.

Horror is also my favorite genre, and you had a great choice of movies there. I have seen them all but not entirely about Eden Lake, maybe I would need to give it a rewatch.

About this:

In recent years the Horror Cinema has experienced a fall, films are made with the typical scares, the same legends

I think you are right for the most part with that observation, however, you will be surprised if you take the time to research horror from previous decades. The most likely thing to happen is that you will encounter some films/series that you haven't seen and are great. This is what has happened to me. I can recommend you these productions that you didn't mention in the post so I assume you haven't seen them.

  • Lake Mungo: excellent horror story if you like the found footage subgenre. This is the best found footage horror film I have seen.

  • The Haunting of Hill House: this was a horror masterpiece from Netflix, especially in the first episodes. If you like horror you need to watch this series. In the second half of the season, it becomes less scary but at the beginning it was awesome. This is an anthology production, so each season has a new story, the second season is called The Haunting of Bly Manor, and even though it was good, it was far from being as scary as the first season.

  • Marianne: Netflix also has this French series about a witch. It isn't as good as the Haunting of Hill House but again, that series for me was a masterpiece. I think this series was canceled but it was cool :(

  • The Outsider: great mystery series from HBO involving a very creepy being that can make unexplainable things. It had a great cast and good writing. This series is mainly mystery and suspense and not really horror though.

  • Channel Zero: you should also check this anthology series from Syfy. I recommend you to skip the first season and watch the other 3. Season 2 called "No End House" has an excellent opening scene that I absolutely loved. The series can get creepy and intriguing and you will probably enjoy it. This series was also canceled, but since this is an anthology at least the stories don't end up incomplete.

  • Servant: this is an apple TV+ series, again, this one isn't really horror but mystery and suspense. First season was awesome, second season not so much but I am expecting an explosive third season.

As you can see, nowadays most productions are taking the form of series for streaming platforms. I hope these recommendations can help you find good content.

Cheers!

Hi thanks for your comment:

I missed quite a few movies in the post.

Lake Mundo: I'm not sure if I saw it, I'm planning to look for it.

The Haunting of Hill House: I haven't seen it, I'm going to look for it.

Marianne: One of my favorite series excellent.

The Outsider: I watched several episodes, but it didn't appeal to me.

Channel Zero: I watched the first season and did not continue. I will follow your recommendation and watch the other seasons.

Servant: Spectacular I just finished the 2nd season.

I love cinema and almost all its genres, like action movies, crime, war, drama, etc.

Cheers

Horror gente is amazing (in every single way). It's intriguing, thought-provoking, powerful and full of surprises.

You did a very good selection, @eve66.

Thank you
