1899: BIENVENIDO A LA REALIDAD / WELCOME TO REALITY [ESP/ENG]

in Movies & TV Showslast year (edited)

Dark is one of my favorite series and is in the top 5 of my favorite series of all time, because everything that has to do with time travel has always caught my attention, but Dark is a series that for many people besides having a plot that sometimes becomes slow and difficult to follow because of its constant plot twists and convoluted situations, is a very well planned series from beginning to end and a series which I think is not given the merit it deserves because it is really excellent, this was a series that was intrigued me during all its seasons, with interesting characters, very well developed and is a series with an aesthetic and personality of its own.

So when I found out that Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, were working on a new series after finishing Dark, I was looking forward to it and before going into a little more in the details of the series, but without going into spoilers, as these post I try not to reveal much of the plot and just give a little my opinion on what I think of this series, 1899 unlike Dark does not have a plot so tangled and with which you can get confused, but it is a very intriguing series, with many mysteries and a plot that gradually develops and in turn, maintains the essence and certain cinematic elements seen in Dark. In short, 1899 has the seal of Dark in each and every one of its chapters.

1899 tells the stories of a group of people who are traveling on a huge ship bound for the United States, the ship, called Kerberos belongs to a company which months before lost another ship called Prometheus, the circumstances of the disappearance of this ship is the central axis of the story of this series, but quickly the crew of the ship, as well as us, the viewer, will find out the whereabouts of the Prometheus, as well as its more than 1000 crew members, which further fuels the mystery behind the events of this series, whose plot twists, if you pay a little attention to what happens on screen, you can deduce to some extent what is happening.

Something I liked about this series is that it has a cast of main characters and supporting characters that gradually become more important in the story, but they are also characters who speak different languages, having characters from Spain, France, Germany, China, among others and certain moments of the story despite the language barrier the stories of each of these characters are intertwined and will have to form bonds despite not fully understand each other. 1899 is a series that encompasses many mysteries, nothing of what we see is really what it is and that is something that shows you with certain elements and situations out of the ordinary. Edemas, this is a series that reflects quite clearly the social inequality, since in the lower part of the ship live people with few memories, which forbid them to climb to the highest part of the ship where are the people with more purchasing power, but as I mentioned above, the stories of these characters gradually come together until the end we finally know what really is this ship and what is its purpose in a plot twist that, at first I expected in a certain way, although I was also surprised because not everything was as I thought.

1899 is a series that visually reminds me a lot to Dark (logically to be of the same creators), but not only in the visual, because at certain times the soundtrack is very similar to Dark and also the detail that in the last minutes of the chapter begins to play a song that somehow represents what happened during that chapter, being this an aspect and a resource that also the creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese used in Dark, so every time there were a few minutes left to finish a chapter I was always waiting to see what song was going to play next. Also as I mentioned before, this series has a slow pace, but I think not as slow as in Dark and certainly the story is not as complicated as in that series, in 1899 the story, although it is still quite mysterious and many times it will leave you with a frown on your face because you don't know what is going on, 1899 is without any doubt, much easier to follow than Dark.

Just when I was about to watch the last chapter of the first season I happened to enter Twitter and found a thread of an author of a book, from Brazil, which accuses 1899 of plagiarizing "all" of her work. I could notice certain similarities with 1899, especially with the figure of the pyramid, which is also very present in 1899 and in the book of this author, I will leave the link of that Twitter thread because it is really interesting, although also and if I am not mistaken, Baran bo Odar came out to deny that they have copied the argument of that book, but still, it is something interesting to investigate. Personally I do not consider 1899 to be a plagiarism, there are enough differences between these two works and besides, the figure of the pyramid is a very used resource in literature and cinema. And leaving that controversy aside, which gave a lot to talk about and became very viral in the last week, I highly recommend that you watch 1899 and I look forward to a second season.

This Series I have it on the list, possibly I will start watching it after the world cup, I like enigmatic stories that tend to confuse viewers, I really liked Dark and certainly as you do in this post, many compare both productions.

Some prefer Dark, but I plan to give this series a chance, as you mention it's easier to keep up with.

Thanks for sharing your opinion

Sure, I also prefer Dark, but 1899 has only one season, but everything points to the fact that it could be as good a series as Dark.

Gracias, saludos

It is an interesting tv show
Thanks

Gracias, saludos
