[ESP-ENG] INITIATIVE: Actors that Impressed me with their acting | INICIATIVA: Actores que me han impresionado con su actuación

in Movies & TV Shows3 years ago (edited)

When I think of actors, I guess like most people, I think of big names in national cinema or television. I feel a little guilty because I thought of another actor from the neighboring country.

Varios papeles/ Several roles

Good day my dear Hivers, I liked this initiative because I can talk about one of my great "crush" of the screen. And not because he was a handsome man when he was young, but because of his acting quality: Al Pacino.

I got to know this actor's work in disarray, starting with A Dog's Afternoon, in what I consider one of his underrated works.

SPOILER ALERT, I'LL TRY NOT TO SAY TOO MUCH BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN EITHER MOVIE, RUN TO SEE IT.

Based on a true event from 1972, along with fellow Godfather actor John Cazale looking to pay for sex reassignment surgery for Pacino's character's partner. It was with this film that this man began to catch my attention.

The Godfather

But The Godfather appears in my life, I remember that in my childhood, there were marathons on channel 5 (Mexican open television) of several hours plagued with commercials and my grandmother was very reluctant to let me watch this movie because they started showing it at 6 or 7 pm.

However, when I grew up and finally got to see it, I liked it in such an unusual way, that it made me want to see all of them, to have the book, to have the video game (for PS2) -which by the way disappointed me because it didn't have her face and voice-, I joined forums, groups where I made solid friendships that had the same love for the trilogy. I miss the Spanish forum called Los Corleone.

The Godfather III

But enough about my love for the trilogy, I'll talk about why I liked Al Pacino's performance in this saga.

As an actress, I watch with fascination the evolution in his character, Michael Corleone becomes a protagonist/antagonist gradually. Al Pacino's performance at the beginning shows a young man who wants to be different from the mafia family, with a certain air of a nice guy, who despite knowing what is happening to his surroundings, was more concerned about falling in love with the young Kay Adams.

If I get technical, Al Pacino is a method actor: based on Stanislavsky's acting techniques, where, I quote Wikipedia, we combine work on the role, with emphasis on research and experimentation of the character's life, and work on oneself, emphasizing the actor's personal involvement and responsibility regarding memory, experience and worldview.

In short, we stimulate psychological processes as a result of thought, memories, consciously thinking "if I am the son of a mafioso and my father was almost killed, and I have been part of the army, how would Mike behave?", activating emotions that are not so controllable, internal motives to justify the action and the definition of what the character seeks to achieve at a given moment. In this case, Michael Corleone was a character who was like a sleeping beast, analytical, intelligent and with an engine like anger, were transforming him into one of the most remembered characters in the history of cinema.

I was totally shocked by the painful scene of the last failed murder where his great love, Mary, his daughter, dies. The character's world goes to hell, that scene is one of the best represented by the silent scream, the face of the decomposed man is a work of art of pure representation of pain. It looks like a religious tragic painting.

Scent of a Woman

Another characteristic of Al Pacino is the look, he has a tremendous expression in his eyes. There is a saying that the look is the mirror of the soul, and I think this man is a clear example of that.

I remember very clearly Al Pacino's look in his first scenes in the film, and how he becomes angry with the attack as if they had really attacked his father, how he softens again when he falls in love again, and how he loses that gleam of innocence. And if you want to see the best example of Al Pacino's look, I highly recommend watching Scent of a Woman, even though it is not his best work, despite the fact that he got the Oscar, his portrayal of a blind man highlights that characteristic of transmitting feelings through the eyes only.

Dog Day Afternoon

The Godfather II

I know it looks like a collage of The Godfather, but I want to rescue one of the best scenes of the saga. When Michael's wife leaves him in the second movie, the argument goes slowly, until at one point Michael loses all serenity and becomes an animal, all because of the hurtful words of a woman who looks for a way to leave him and hits him where it hurts the most: the children. I actually jumped out of my seat when he unexpectedly hits his ex-wife and screams.

Scarface

It's clear that anti-heroes are a great delight in the hands of this actor: they have charisma, you hate them, you love them, everything happens with Al Pacino's performance. I really had zero empathy for Tony Montana in Scarface, but I admit that this character was designed to be hated and loved at the same time, and of course, Al Pacino with his charisma manages to make him an endearing character despite his context.

The Irishman

«Algunos actores interpretan personajes. Al Pacino se transforma en ellos»
—Lee Strasberg.

Despite the years, Al Pacino is an actor I remember with great affection and affection, who continues to give great roles despite his age. He still has that gift of catching with those eyes, which in addition to having the mark of experience, show that he was a worthy representative and student trained by Charlie Laughton and Lee Strasberg.
He took risks in playing a homosexual in 1975 when I don't think anyone had ever done it literally on the big screen. And he did it in an interesting way because he played a fairly complex character.
He trained in dialects in order to get closer accents (it is de rigueur to learn to do regional and foreign accents in an actor's career), he had physical training with weapons and in combat.

Returning to the words of his teacher, I conclude my participation:

«Some actors play characters. Al Pacino transforms himself into them.»
-Lee Strasberg.
