When I first heard about this series, I knew that sooner or later I would have to watch it. I recommend you to get acquainted with the history of this series, and more specifically the book on the basis of which it was created. In short, this is a writer and investigative journalist who infiltrated the mafia (or had very good informants, so I did not delve into this story anyway - I bet it must have been both) and revealed their secrets. After this statement, he began receiving death threats, so police placed him under strict 24-hour security. For now, he is still alive, God give him as much as possible, because the mafia never forgets. Based on this book, a movie and series were created, this 1 is supposedly quite loosely presenting the content of the original, the 2 is allegedly a more faithful adaptation. I don't know which is better, but from what I see on the internet, few people remember the 2008 movie, but the series receives a lot of praise despite 5 seasons. The last one was released at the end of last year (more specifically - 2 episodes premiered on December 17). Apparently there will be another one, it is speculated that it could be the end of 2022 or the 1st half of 2023.

The review of the 1st season will be quite "dry" - I do not want to reveal too much. Spoilers will start with the next text, and I will get rid of these completely in the 3rd part), because it is a product that is worth getting to know for yourself, even for the story itself. Especially when you like mafia or brutal, very literal cinema. I do not know to what extent this opinion, or should I say a stereotype, is true, but I have heard many times that the descendants of the Romans love to show everything literally. I read it in a few places on the internet and in one of the posts by my colleague, Captain Rosomak (link to the profile at the end). I felt at home, because I like such atmosphere in Polish films or series on similar topics. Here, however, the creators throw stronger meat - more often we see death in a brutal way, even women and children suffer - be it mentally or physically. I could say that I felt the dung and poverty that surround the heroes more strongly than in this type of films from Poland, but while writing this sentence, I remembered that we had "worse" times in this respect. Hmm, maybe it's due to better direction, more interesting and better-written characters, or more fast-paced action?

As I wrote, I will avoid spoilers, I have to write about some things. Don't worry, I will do it in such a general way as not to spoil your screening. We have some really good and vital threads in this series. My favorite is the transformation of one of the characters - at first, he is a spoiled character who has no purpose in life and just exists, wasting no time playing. There's nothing wrong with that, of course - we all waste more or less time on crap or insignificant things. The problem arises when we abuse it, especially when we avoid the consequences of our mistakes (no matter if it's because of luck, escape to the comfort zone, or any other reason). Due to certain events, the hero changes his perspective of looking at the world and revises the list of priorities. He is still short-sighted and makes mistakes, but he does it less often and uses his strengths more efficiently. Besides him, we also have many interesting male and female characters. It is true that men dominate here, but the heroines are expressive and play a significant role - especially Immacolata Savastano. He is one of my favorite characters, mainly due to his wisdom, ruthlessness and empathy towards the weaker ones. And there are many of these here, after all, the action takes place in a poor area of Italy. The creators show us the community drama resulting from poverty, lack of perspectives or authority. I see similarities to many places in Poland where teenagers have nothing to do and their parents cannot afford to provide better entertainment (or prospects) for their children. Thus, young people do not feel the need to try to improve their lives, but they willingly join (or carry out orders for them) to the mafia.

In conclusion - if you are not scared by the number of episodes and you like good, strong and brutal gangster movies, I recommend it. I don't know how it compares to cult works like "Forbidden Empire" or "The Sopranos" or "Boardwalk Empire", but I can definitely say that it is at least good. Hopefully this story will end and won't break down at some point. I rate 1 season at +7/10.

Podsumowując - jeśli nie przeraża Was ilość odcinków i lubicie dobre, mocne i brutalne kino gangsterskie, to polecam.
