The Lion King: The Live-Action remake that is not a Live-Action / El Rey León: El remake Live-Action que no es Live-Action

in Movies & TV Shows2 years ago

Since Disney released the live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in 2010, the company began to bring the rest of its animated classics to the same format, as a way to squeeze more profit out of those franchises. Some of these films gave a twist to the original story to achieve a little innovation in the new film, such as Maleficent and Cruella, while others were criticized for their lack of originality by telling exactly the same story without any kind of novelty.

The Lion King was one of these films adapted to Live-Action, however, being a film made up exclusively of animal characters, the film does not really become a Live-Action, but a hyper-realistic 3D animated film.

Same story, different technology

Unfortunately, The Lion King was one of those films that chose to tell the exact same story told in the past, thus missing the opportunity to innovate with a twist that would surprise the viewer. Being just another film in this new wave of Disney, this should not necessarily affect this film more directly, however, it does.

So what's the problem? I'll take as an example Beauty and the Beast from 2017, another film criticized for telling the exact same original story. By replacing cartoon with real image, you replace the exaggerated expressiveness of the cartoon with the expressions of flesh-and-blood actors, resulting in a story that is just as digestible. This could also be said of Cinderella (2015), Alicia in Wonderland (2010) and other similar cases, but what about The Lion King? That being only hyper-realistic 3D animals, both their expressions and their facial features are extremely minimized, to the point of being occasionally difficult to grasp. Thus, in addition to telling a story mostly already known to the public, this story is also told with less personality.

Another way to live the Lion King

Obviously the new style of the film gives a completely different aspect to the story, the shots often seem to be taken from real sceneries in National Geographic, as well as the real aspect of the animals, although it has the disadvantages I mentioned before, it also allows to take advantage of some of them in a different way, as it happens, in my opinion, with Timon and Scar.

Timon, for his part, has differences as he is a real suricate, however, he takes advantage of the charm of this species to develop his own new essence, becoming one of the most likeable characters of the new version. The young Simba also benefits from the tenderness of his species at an early age, but he also lacks more expressiveness to accompany his rebellious personality.

In the case of Scar, the character no longer conveys the same malice in the face as his animated version, not being able to gesticulate in the same way. However, his real appearance manages to be more imposing and win over the audience in his own way.

For the voices of the characters in this film, a whole new cast was chosen, made up of current actors such as Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, John Oliver, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor and several other well-known actors. However, one that stands out among them is James Earl Jones, who played Mufasa in 1994 in the animated version and returns to play him in this new version, as the only returning actor from the original cast.

The voice of James Earl Jones gives Mufasa an imposing, respectful and powerful tone, allowing Mufasa to be perceived as the leader he is.

As a curious detail, I saw this movie in English shortly after having watched a marathon of the original Star Wars trilogy, where James Earl Jones shines giving voice to Darth Vader. Both characters have a similar tone of voice from the actor, apart from having in common the role of a father who seeks to guide his son (phrases like "Remember who you are, son" managed to get a smile out of me for the comparison).

I'll be honest: I haven't seen the live-action version. I refused to watch it. It doesn't appeal to me.
I love The Lion King, with the old animation, because it was a special time for me, it's a movie that brings back other pleasant memories.
I will surely see it someday, but for now I'll settle for the old version.

You are not missing much, because it's basically the same movie you watched but more expensive.
The old version is such a classic!

I watched this film back when it was released and it was OK for me. I still enjoyed the original version more, but creating this remake with more realistic-looking animals was fine for me.

I enjoyed watching it too, The Lion King has always had a good story and even when I would had prefer to see a new version of the story, it's still a really enjoyable story.
