Marvel como franquicia cinematográfica dominó por mucho las salas de cine durante la década del 2010, desde sus primeros pasos en Iron Man en el 2008, a su primer gran crossover en The Avengers en el 2012, hasta su gran desenlace en el 2019 con The Avengers: Endgame. Ahora Marvel Studios se enfrenta a la necesidad de encontrar un nuevo camino para su franquicia, para que ésta pueda seguir ganándose al público a pesar de haber culminado la historia que conectaba todas estas películas, y el concepto del Multiverso parece ser ese nuevo camino.
Son muchas las teorías de lo que podría estar tramando el estudio para el futuro de la saga, más aún con todas las películas que hay confirmadas (Incluídas Spider-Man No Way Home que acaba de estrenar su primer tráiler, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness y hasta un remake de Los Cuatro Fantásticos), la todavía no utilizada adquisición de Fox y sus derechos sobre los X-Men, todas las puertas que están abriendo series como WandaVision o Loki, la relación que pueda tener esta saga con el recién re-nombrado Sony's Spider-Man Universe y más elementos que tienen a la fanaticada de Marvel en suspenso respecto a lo que viene.
Sin embargo, más allá de predecir lo que Marvel Studios tenga en mente para el futuro de la saga, en esta ocasión voy a hablar del primer capítulo de una serie que marca el primer paso de la saga para adentrarse en el ya mencionado multiverso.
En "What If...?", Marvel adentra a los seguidores del UCM (Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel) en un concepto ya utilizado en sus cómics, el cual es la teoría de que existe una infinidad de realidades alternas a la nuestra, algunas bastante similares únicamente distinguibles por cambios específicos y otras tan diferentes que apenas se pueden relacionar. En el caso de los cómics, este concepto ya se ha explotado al punto de mostrar universos de todo tipo, sin embargo, para los seguidores del UCM, el Multiverso sigue siendo algo ajeno a lo conocido, por lo tanto, la mejor forma para introducirlo a la saga es con una buena presentación, fluida, clara y concisa. En ese sentido, el primer episodio de "What If...?"", titulado "What if... Captain Carter were the first Avenger?", parece una forma adecuada de comenzar.
Marvel as a film franchise dominated movie theaters by far during the 2010s, from its first steps in Iron Man in 2008, to its first major crossover in The Avengers in 2012, to its grand denouement in 2019 with The Avengers: Endgame. Now Marvel Studios is faced with the need to find a new path for its franchise, so that it can continue to win over audiences despite having culminated the story that connected all of these films, and the concept of the Multiverse seems to be that new path.
There are many theories about what the studio could be up to for the future of the saga, even more so with all the films that have been confirmed (including Spider-Man No Way Home which just released its first trailer, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and even a remake of The Fantastic Four), the still unused acquisition of Fox and its rights of the X-Men, all the doors that series like WandaVision or Loki are opening, the relationship that this saga may have with the newly renamed Sony's Spider-Man Universe and more elements that have Marvel fans in suspense about what's to come.
However, beyond predicting what Marvel Studios has in mind for the future of the saga, this time I am going to talk about the first chapter of a series that marks the saga's first step into the aforementioned multiverse.
In "What If...?", Marvel introduces the followers of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) to a concept already used in their comics, which is the theory that there is an infinite number of alternate realities to ours, some quite similar only distinguishable by specific changes and others so different that they can hardly be related. In the case of comics, this concept has already been exploited to the point of showing universes of all kinds, however, for the followers of MCU, the Multiverse is still something alien to the known, therefore, the best way to introduce it to the saga is with a good presentation, fluid, clear and concise. In that sense, the first episode of "What If...?", titled "What if...? Captain Carter were the first Avenger?", seems an appropriate way to start.
La Capitana Carter
Cada episodio de la serie muestra un universo alterno al de las películas del UCM, siendo éstos mayormente iguales a éste, pero con algún punto clave que genera un cambio importante al resto de la historia.
En este primer episodio, tenemos una realidad basada en los acontecimientos de la película "Capitán América: El Primer Vengador", con la diferencia de que Peggy Carter permanece en la habitación donde Steve Rogers está a punto de recibir el suero del supersoldado que lo convertirá en el Capitán América, en este caso, Peggy es capaz de notar a tiempo que hay un agente de Hydra infiltrado, por lo que intenta con antelación detenerlo, causando una revuelta que acabará con Rogers malherido e incapaz de recibir el suero, por lo que Carter decidirá suplirlo y recibir ella el suero convirtiéndose así en la Capitana Carter, con los colores y símbolos de su natal Inglaterra.
Captain Carter
Each episode of the series shows an alternate universe to that of the MCU movies, being these mostly the same as this one, but with some key point that generates an important change to the rest of the story.
In this first episode, we have a reality based on the events of the movie "Captain America: The First Avenger", with the difference that Peggy Carter remains in the room where Steve Rogers is about to receive the super-soldier serum that will turn him into the Captain America, in this case, Peggy is able to notice in time that there is an agent of Hydra infiltrated, so she tries in advance to stop him, causing a riot that will end with Rogers badly wounded and unable to receive the serum, so Carter will decide to replace him and receive the serum herself, thus becoming Captain Carter, with the colors and symbols of her native England.
Peggy y Steve
El elemento que más toma protagonismo en esta versión de la historia es la estrecha relación que llevan Steve Rogers y Peggy Carter, pues el episodio destaca más la fuerza de su relación al no haber conflictos internos en su romance (A diferencia de la película). Además ambos están en situaciones muy diferentes a la historia que ya conocíamos, Peggy obtiene una oportunidad para mostrar su valía como mujer en una época de mayor machismo en el ejército, pero aún con debe luchar para demostrar que esa valía va más allá del suero. Steve en cambio permanece como el debilucho con ideales y motivación pero sin aptitud física para la guerra, cuyo romance con Peggy ya se estaba cultivando desde antes de que cualquiera de los dos recibiera el suero en cada realidad, por lo que en esta oportunidad, se convertirá en un apoyo importante para Peggy en su misión.
Peggy and Steve
The element that takes center stage in this version of the story is the close relationship between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, as the episode highlights more the strength of their relationship as there are no internal conflicts in their romance (Unlike the movie). In addition both are in very different situations to the story we already knew, Peggy gets a chance to show her worth as a woman in a time of increased sexism in the military, but even with she must struggle to prove that this worth goes beyond the serum. Steve instead remains the wimp with ideals and motivation but no physical aptitude for war, whose romance with Peggy was already being cultivated since before either of them received the serum in both realities, so in this opportunity, he will become an important support for Peggy in her mission.
Paralelismos
La historia está mayormente basada en la misma historia de la película, salvo por determinadas cosas que ocurrirán diferente por las acciones y decisiones que tomará la Capitana Carter y no el Capitán América, conforme más avanza el capítulo, más se van notando las diferencias con la historia original, hasta llegar a un punto con elementos que probablemente Marvel no se habría atrevido a incorporar en las primeras películas de la saga (Y que igualmente habrían dado una sensación muy diferente a lo logrado en esa etapa).
Parallelisms
The story is mostly based on the same story of the movie, except for certain things that will happen differently by the actions and decisions that will take the Captain Carter and not the Captain America, the more the chapter progresses, the more the differences with the original story are noticed, until reaching a point with elements that probably Marvel would not have dared to incorporate in the first films of the saga (And that also would have given a very different feeling to what was achieved at that stage).
Como introducción a "What If...?"
La principal función que cumple este episodio es dar una entrada a lo que será esta serie tan diferente a todo previamente mostrado por Marvel, siendo esta historia una buena opción pues nos permite ver claramente la base de todas las historias que veremos en "What if...?", es decir, ramificaciones de la misma saga cinematográfica.
Respecto a la esencia de este primer episodio y lo que se ve que será la serie, el humor es claramente un humor comparable al de las películas, aunque un tanto más exagerado al ser una caricatura (Pero sin llegar a excederse demasiado o ser comparable con la mayoría de cartoons). Sin llegar a ser para niños, si acaba sintiéndose un poco infantil, más que por el humor, por las situaciones planteadas, que suelen hilarse y construirse de una forma más similar a la dinámica de las caricaturas, así como llegan a tomarse libertades respecto a determinadas cosas que normalmente necesitarían una mayor explicación. Por poner un ejemplo sin ahondar mucho, que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos invierta en un supersoldado como símbolo que usa los emblemas británicos, sin ninguna explicación, es una idea que no considero muy realista y menos siendo parte del ejército estadounidense, y es el tipo de puntos que en un Live-action suelen tomar con más cuidado.
La animación y los diseños no sería de mis partes favoritas de la serie, pero sí logran mantener un equilibrio entre parecerse a los personajes reales y tener a su vez una animación dinámica.
As an introduction to "What If...?"
The main function that this episode fulfills is to give an entry to what will be this series so different from everything previously shown by Marvel, being this story a good choice as it allows us to clearly see the basis of all the stories that we will see in "What if...?", that is, ramifications of the same film saga.
Regarding the essence of this first episode and what we can see that the series will be, the humor is clearly a humor comparable to that of the movies, although a little more exaggerated as it is a cartoon (but without going too far or being comparable to most cartoons). Without being for children, if it ends up feeling a little childish, more than for the humor, for the situations raised, which are usually spun and built in a more similar way to the dynamics of the cartoons, as well as they get to take liberties with respect to certain things that normally would need a greater explanation. To give an example without delving too deep, that the US government invests in a super soldier as a symbol that uses the British emblems, without any explanation, is an idea that I do not consider very realistic and less being part of the US military, and is the kind of points that are usually taken with more care in a Live-action.
The animation and designs would not be one of my favorite parts of the series, but they do manage to maintain a balance between looking like the real characters and having dynamic animation.

Hahah, last Marvel projects hasn't been as good as they could, but I still enjoy the saga and I hope they solve that mess they did with the multiverse in Loki.
Esta es una de las series que estoy esperando que acabe para empezar a verla en maraton. En los últimos años me he convertido en fan de Marvel y esta idea de explorar historias alternativas por medio de la animación me parece apropiada. Tendré que tener paciencia para esperar a que todos los episodios estén disponibles pero bueno, ya estoy acostumbrado a tener que esperar un buen tiempo para ver las producciones que me interesan xD
La idea de la serie también me resultó atractiva desde el inicio, aunque yo sí elegí verla en emisión porque no me molesta esperar una semana para ver el siguiente capítulo, puedo disfrutar también ese suspenso 👌
